SNIP I find the M49 to be the most versatile of all the Neumann big boys. THIS IS THE BOLDEST STATEMENT IN THIS THREAD… so far!

Forgot to mention how much I agreed with this. My desert island would not be the same without one.

Ya, there's a reason no one else is trying to do this. It's a design nightmare trying to get over hurdles as simple as a cable and connector. Full disclosure, I can't afford this either, which is frustrating because so far I really like it. I've stayed away from C12 style mics for a while, I had access to a vintage one and a few nice clones early on in my career. I was recording myself a lot trying to learn more, and that style never suited my voice well (It's my fault, I've got really sloppy singing technique and tend to be really sibilant). It's been interesting coming back to the C12 world again after a long break. There's just SO much clarity in here that I've been missing from the other mics I have here. Even my Chandler TG mic, which is pretty full range, sounds kind of congested and phasey in the high mids compared to the V24. I'm also being reminded of how important it is to pair the right preamps with some of these vintage designs. I think that inherently, a lot of the design choices on mic's from that era were based off of the mediums everyone had to record to (tape, vinyl, tube preamps...). A lot of the things that bother me about the V24 right off the bat (from a personal preference standpoint) when it's plugged into my API preamps, completely go away when I run it through one of the Coil Audio preamps. Running this thing through the Coil's has kind of given me a change of perspective on the C12 world of mics. Ya, it's a lot of money. I was initially really surprised and a little disappointed when Derek first told me he was doing this and the price point. After hearing him talk about the epic mess it was to do this though, I get it. He can talk more about it, but there's just no good way to do this as a normal product run at an affordable price. This is basically a "what if" passion project to do something that a lot of other companies have thought about doing and given up on pretty early in the process. The only other stereo tube mics I can think of that are newer are the Brauner (well over $10k) and the Manley Gold Reference (can't remember how much that one was). Neither is made anymore I believe. The only "somewhat" affordable option was the Telefunken AR-70, which I owned for a very brief period and sold when Derek told me he was going to do the stereo V44 mic. I'm not going to go into bash mode, but I did not like the Telefunken at all. It was also fixed pattern on one capsule, because of the 7 pin cable limitation... All I'm saying is, this isn't some company randomly throwing together some parts and doing a money grab. If you want a C24 clone, it ain't going to be cheap. Not to mention you basically have a switchable 251 voicing on each channel too. I was given some foreknowledge of this also, from our friend Derek! vanguardaudiolabs Yes it sure is pricey but there are a few considerations that make it a good value. 1. It’s a Stereo C12 not just a C24- it fixes the bass starvation issue 2. You can use one 1/2 for a true C12 clone 3. You can use it as TWO C12s if recording 2 singers together 4. Freaking 251 mode!! 5. It’s a handmade boutique mic with incredible components

Honey, I wasn't having an affair -- but my penis was involved. “In 1992 i did not vote for that slick man who did not have sex with that woman.” <sigh> I did. At least i can admit it.

As I neared the end of the latest bottle of Basel Hayden, i cracked open a bottle of Woodford’s and a bottle of Lieper’s Fork sits waiting.
But i put the cork back in and just had a light beer from a craft brewery.

I just spotted an Audioscape Opto Compressor at a great price and grabbed it. My first bit of Audioscape kit - I've wanted the LA2A sound for ages. I'm hoping it's more towards the original 68 vibe than the UA RI which personally I find to be a bit too vanilla. Certainly the demo's I've heard of the AS Opto it has that vibe. with the originals…if you could smell ‘candle wax’ after an hour of being ‘on’, you had a good one. But the opto won’t catch fire! Like the stam, changing the T4 can make a difference!

I have the feeling that 'not being able to keep up with demand' these days is a lot more common than we all realize.
And when you spend hours out of every day trying to track down components, it isn't hard to run out of steam and just crash with 100+ unanswered emails.

I never really liked the LA2A for vocals although lots of people do. I LOVE the 1176 rev A on vocals. I can't imagine using anything else these days. I feel the A’s are bright. The bluey solved that issue but there’s place I turn on the A’s now since “ bright mixes “ is the new thing. The A/s or more correctly, AB revisions/clones are indeed bright and brightest in 12:1 ratio. If I were tracking you, I would use a Rev D on your voice after an optical or Mu (V-comp or retro). But only for peaks. Your talking voice (alone) is a beautiful natural bright voice anyhow. Honestly, I don't think I would use a V-Comp on you. And that's a first. Especially after that Stam C800G

I do something similar with no gates or anything in PT. Use strip silence, pull up the threshold so that it cuts out everything but the toms. Take the release and extend to the next grid mark, and put a nice curved exponential fade on the tom release. Works very well with minimal tweaking. Cuts out all the bleed. Sometimes the bleed is desired though, ,and that's where it gets trickier..... As long as you're using the OH's it's pretty smooth in the end result. Getting a drummer who knows how to balance his kit and playing helps a lot too..... That's pretty much what I do as well.

I do have 3 Philips/Valvo. But I think I'll save that comparison to a clone. Which is the best U67 clone on the market? Difficult question. All of them are fairly similar in design. A lot of the current ones out there are based on the same DIY projects, with the exception of some older ones like Ben's IIRC. Can anyone with more "face time" with clones give an informed opinion? Well it won't be the Heiserman since they don't make one and won't as long as it's in production. I like how they make stuff AS CLOSE to the originals as possible and price accordingly. They don't cheap out. I have yet to hear a convincing clone . . . although Martin speaks highly of stam's and I trust Martin John Butler

My fav was Tele with the Valvo 2nd. Then the Mullard and RFT last (I did not like it). I have an Amperex coming in the mail for my 67 hoping its a good one! Thanks for the video. Yes the RFT is awful. I haven't heard a bad Amperex EF86 yet! I'll betcha it will be great.

Being an early Coil convert I have 6 channels of 70’s and 2 channels of 286’s. I love the “tape” glue of the 70’s and the beauty of the 286 but I have so many other clear tube pre’s like a pair of branch 2’s, REDD 47’s and a pair of Tubetech MP2’s. Plus lots of other modules and Thermionic stuff. The Coils are just so easy and uniform to use which I love and nothing beats them on drums which is all I enjoy recording these days mainly. Only 8 coils out of your 684 preamps? Preposterous!

I sold a Telecaster and bought several GIK panels. Perhaps a sign of maturity? Yeah, sigh, I don't enjoy getting older either.

It's interesting to see your post about choosing between the 1176 and LA-3A compressors for acoustic guitar tracking. Both options have their strengths. Welcome aboard, Will! I started another thread called "Favorite Acoustic Guitar Compressor" that you may find interesting as well. A couple of new findings were delightful to learn about!

The "secret" is recording live with everybody listening to each other using no headphones or stage monitors to screw up the dynamics! How I wish that weren't a "secret".
