Funny enough, if everyone was positioned correctly around the mic, you could easily record an entire ensemble with just a Royer SF-12 or any of it's relatives! I've done it a few times, and it was amazing! Here's one example: Artist: Big Bill Morganfield, I was going for a old school blues vibe. Drums Bass 2 x guitars Big Bill on Vocal Was exactly what the doctor ordered! I love it when I can close my eyes and 'look around the room'. Thanks for sharing!!

Try to remember that harmonic distortion is part of the optical process and sound.
A used LA3a or new V3a are both fabulous.

Well I couldn't resist. Saw an M49b on Sweden's "Craigslist" at a great price and bought it! Extremely good condition 9/10. PSU, cables and swivel looks almost NOS. Never seen such a clean PSU. And.. believe it or not a working M7 capsule in good condition. I can either be Jealous as hell or live vicariously through you😎 So I’m going to split the middle and jealously vicariously live through you😁 I will be vicariously jealous through you

Been rebuilding, upgrading and parts assembling various guitars the past few months . . . so I won't bore you with pickup neck pot pick guard and other details . . .
oh, picked up an old Beyerdrynamic M88. Anyone use one? I hear it's great on Oboe and Jaw-harp.

Looking for an opto compressor to track with, something that does not affect the tone much snip 1. CL1b 2. stam SA2a (original) 3. Audioscape OPTO - easily argued it affects tone to the good. 4. LA3a - stiffer in response, but also affects the tone by bringing forward the brash presence overtly or covertly in the material.

U87 is definitely on the short list. No doubt. Beyond that....um, maybe KM84? Not sure. Glad I don't have to really contemplate this subject. Most of my mic collection will not be sold until I'm 6 feet under..... Man I thought we were going to leave each other’s mics to who ever lived longer😁 I'm still in on this deal, right?

It would be nice to be tricky and have a stereo mic at least. I honestly wouldn’t have any complaints using my Vanguard V44. I’ve done plenty of projects using mostly Vanguard stuff, so it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch. I’ve done enough mic review videos at this point where I’ve done a whole song using just one mic. It’s limiting in some ways, but it’s also made me realize it’s not as limiting as some people assume when we have these hypothetical discussion. I’m currently working on a new mic with Derek at Vanguard that’s probably going to end up being my “one” mic. I got to review his crazy stereo C24 clone, and we started talking about a mono version. Although it’s definitely going to be in the C12 ballpark and “inspired”, we spent last weekend doing a lot of modifications and trying some new stuff. Keep an eye out for that one in the next few weeks, there going to be a lot of video content coming out on the development. It’s crazy all the things that mic is going to be able to do… Everything from C12, to taming the top end from 251 all the way to ribbon territory, as well as controlling THD at the tube. It’s going to be a fun one! So glad this is coming together!

Simple rule of thumb: If it works for bass drum, it works for male vocal, especially baritone to bass. So if it works for Shakers, it works on female voices? I heard they tried it on The Spice Girls. But the AE got in trouble with a salt. Es possible . . . possible muy caliente

Gee I wonder which one Ward might pick. Out of those two? Gee, it's a tough call . . . but a slight edge to the 441. The 441 with its pristine audio quality takes the lead over the SM7b with its Lumbersexual hipster rugged good looks.

Yes I love my re16. It’s good on everything and is much higher fidelity than the current re20 and any ev635a. It sounds great on vocals, cabinets, and snares. Everything will be a bit woody but it would work. Yeah, I like the top end of the 11/16 way more than on the RE20 (of any vintage). The RE27 also has a better top end than the 20 to me, but it’s sort of at the edge of becoming a little harsh on some voices. It’s a good mic, though. It's my absolute favorite dynamic, with GREAT EQ switches on it, giving you 6 mic variations in one beautiful microphone.

Is this the same capsule as the LDC cap he made for Oktava 012s? Wondering how it compares. I have one and desperately want a second. Very U67ish. The caps rarely come up for sale but I see those hulks way more often Not sure, but yeah - those 012's with LDC head baskets are seriously underrated. and that's exactly how I'd describe them - a solid state U67. No tube goodness, but voiced the same. <<thumbsup>>. I need to use mine more.... I have one with the 'Red C12' head - which is from BLUE microphones (RIP) It's a great mic for female voices and mandolin family instruments.

[…] Actually the M88 and the M88-ish AKG D790, usually worked best on me, out of all sub-$500 Dynamics.[…] Interesting. Is it M88-ish for vocals only, or on bass drum / floor tom duty as well? Simple rule of thumb: If it works for bass drum, it works for male vocal, especially baritone to bass.
