I haven’t ever had the opportunity to use the passive VL37. I’m sure it sounds great though. There will be more Samar mics in my future, I’m pretty sure. That is what I have - the passive ones and they are stunning. Knowing Mark Fouxman - he is so meticulous - he will not release a mic that does not sound great. I have a pair of the passives as well, and yes, they are STUNNING! I'm curious if the much touted additional reach of the active version can be replicated using a cloud-lifter or other active booster with the passive version

Still experimenting with whether this is a good fit for my voice, but I love it so much on guitar and drums (and likely lots and lots of other sources) that I kept it. The VL37a has so much reach into the sound. Presents so much life and detail in this very pleasing way, with nothing sticking out. Have you (or anyone else reading and able to comment) compared a VL37 with a cloud lifter to a VL37a?

Avoid the honk? Sure, that's the core of the sax sound! LOL except Darren Rahn and Dave Koz, of course! There can be too much of a good thing! sounds like Rock'n'roll, baby! No success without excess. LOL

Easy... C414EB with brass capsule or Soyuz Bomblet. U67 is also good, but C414/Bomblet pointed towards the middle of the instrument is DONE. DW Fearn pre amp is also super saxxxxy for this application. Just avoid a U87AI whatever you do. HONK HONK HONK Avoid the honk? Sure, that's the core of the sax sound! LOL except Darren Rahn and Dave Koz, of course!

Speaking of AVID interfaces, and I will tag my brain cousin drbill on this, but I have found that the AVID HD I/Os sound slightly better with an external clock than using IO#1 as the internal clock for the whole shooting match. Just my findings, your mileage may vary!

Best I liked the way I sounded was when PBS put a U67 on me. Locally I bring my own Josephson C715 with me. I like it better, but in a different way so I bought one. I strive for purity rather than harmonics and color. On stage I bring my Beyerdynamic M201 TG that I keep stored in the bell of my horn. Astounding tenor saxophone sounds from that microphone. HMM!! Great suggestion. I can see a 201 being stellar on sax also! Love to know what microphone was used on the sax solo on Baker Street, and what was used on the Breakfast in America album by supertramp as well.

I've used a couple 1178s on the regular and I agree the Pulsar is a great plug and nails the vibe of the real thing. I love 1178s... they have an edge that earlier revisions of the 1176 don't that compliments room mics and fuzzy guitars. Trying running a guitar DI, pre turned way up into the first channel, with the compressor OFF, fed into the second channel (compressor on). Led Zeppelin IV guitar sound! First person yet who understands the 1178. Congrats. I'll be spilling the beans on some secrets in the near future.

Since I don't have a REDD mic like drsax, C414 b ULS. and some other 414s are great as well.

Don't know if you've seen many pictures of my control room, but I rely on 90s Tannoy System 215dmt mark2s and System 12 mark 2s for all my tracking. Love those big gray boxes! Rip Tannoy! The Precisions with the super tweeters were good. Goddamn Behringer. I have even harsher words for the B-word company

I spoke to the Geithain disti, you probably know John from the purple site. Super cool person and very knowledgable, I've been tempted to try out a 934K demo pair (they start at 30Hz so full range and these are proper coaxial's with cardioid bass).. I think the issue is I'm going to really like them. After my obvious and vocal love of all things ATC. I must say I do really like working with coaxial monitors. I remember using a pair of Tannoy's back in the 80's! Don't know if you've seen many pictures of my control room, but I rely on 90s Tannoy System 215dmt mark2s and System 12 mark 2s for all my tracking. Love those big gray boxes!

FYI: Was just up on FB, looks like Josh will be giving one of these away on his Instagram account this week. View AttachmentI watched that earlier this morning and thought it was one of his most effective reviews! He hits on some really good points and centers in some of what a 78 really does and how it can be used as a tone box. Some of us have experience with the real thing and can't wait to dig into the newest incranation of the 1178 and share some secrets!

So after a bit of digging, Studio One + Quantum interface seems to be somewhat similar to HDX. Latency is automatically compensated on inserts. No fiddling with software because everything is integrated, according to users. However, it seems like latency is worse than HDX. It shouldn't be a big deal if you're only mixing with hardware. Might be worth looking into. I had a client come in yesterday with his mock-ups on a PC laptop running Studio One. It kind of reminded me of Chibson.

Just remember, "Trust the Science". I know right? - First I was ignorant. Then I trusted the science. Then, quickly, "trust" became an obvious ruse. Then I became a conspiracist. Then I was deemed "right" by alternative science. Then the original science changed to fit a different narrative. Then all science became non-important in real life. And now, I'm left staring at my left foot.....wondering if 96k is going to infect the audio world as we know it, and make storage costs double.... . Things I think about in my spare time while files bounce down.... That's fecking brilliant!!

I only ever use hardware but I’ve always used an 1176 at an 8:1 ratio to catch peaks and a Vari Mu or an Opto to add an overall smoothness. I lean towards clean vocals a lot more than I did when I was younger but sometimes I’ll still go heavy as an effect depending but then I’ll use an HG2 or an extra ribbon mic that I’ll crush. It is de rigeur. I use a Vari-Mu or Opto first, Just riding the waves . . . then a 76 to catch the peaks. These three types of compression rely on distortion for the tone and effect, to a certain degree. It's just part of it. An unavoidable part that is sometimes a blessing, sometimes a curse.

Update…ordered an Iron Age LH95….Matt kind of directed me to their H9 but after listening to some demos of the 95, and checking out my sieq plugin vs my Helios plug, I kind of preferred the Siemans thing for a general purpose tone shaper. Anyway, I want a pair eventually, so instead of the Chandler opto, I went with the Pete’s Place BAC. I only have a 3 space rack (on purpose). Awesome I love matt@IAA LH95 - I should get a pair of them for room EQs, cos I have my only one on crotch mic, permanently, since I track a lot of drums. It's a beautiful EQ!

HF isn't an issue up to 100' cable lengths. And it is even negligible at 200'.
I have almost everything made from Canare Star Quad, some Mogami, some Belden 4 conductor. Slightly measurable loss with the Belden at longer than 50' cable lengths, but only very very slightly.
I made most of my Star Quad microphone cables in 1993. They still perform like new, 31 years later.
