Recently, there was a Demo Deal Compex at Vintage King. Almost did it. However, the SOS review scared me off: unbalanced I/Os, a need to have the thing calibrated periodically, controls are fiddly and "good" results are sometimes not simple to achieve. Of course, I've never used one, so there it is.
I decided to spend more time on the obvious: channel the spirit of John Henry Bonham and infuse him in my drummer, or, at a minimum, put him to work as an editor of my midi drum parts! (I know, a contradiction in terms). And always study the phenomenon that he was.

Well hell. The Kemper didn't move me, until now. I suppose I'll add it to the list. Sheesh.

spending a little money rigging up my downstairs for recording... I've decided to convert my entire family room over to recording. Move the TV, turntable, home theater out, and make room for more gear and a semi-permanent vocal booth. I told my mates that I need to commit, totally, to the art of music production. Work, and Rock - nothing else. Buy a bigger console, add some more outboard, get serious. We have the music, and our egos tell us some of it is pretty good. We have written a schedule, which includes a fully packaged album in vinyl by the end of 2015. Music, art, everything - there's a lot to do. Incorporate the studio. Start up a record label. Get busy. It is a dream of mine to have a shelf of my music next to my Zeppelin albums (above them?) when I am an old man, sitting by the fire, having a medicinal smoke, spinning records. My records. I don't give a damn if it sells, that's not the point. (Well OK, it would be nice, I still believe in the Money for Nothing, Chicks for Free thing. Even in 2015). God willing, we will make some noise. Maybe some of it will be good, perhaps even beautiful. So for me, it's not just the equipment, it's developing and sustaining the drive to record/mix/produce every day. That's the challenge.

Anyone doing this? What are some quality options that don't require a second on the house? 8) I'm looking at the bla microclock ll? Probably need BNC connect. Ah, the eternal question. There seems to be controversy regarding clocking. From a technical perspective, many (most?) say that internal is the best, with the primary clock being your AD if you clock multiple devices. This is what I do, off of my Burl Bomber. But there are PLENTY of testimonials about how the use of a bad-ass clock such as Antelope's 10M enhances the tonality of all converters in a system. I'm not sure what advantage you get using a lower-cost external clock, but I'm interested as well. Enquiring minds want to know!

Killer live guitar tone here, the Faces were a great band. And then there's Keef.
How much more nasal can that be? None. None more nasal.

so I'll bump the bass up a touch while lowering vocals and hope I land somewhere I can I can actually enjoy listening to. Martin, based on my personal (in)experience, you might want to lower the vox and then bump the bass as separate actions. I have been guilty of changing multiple things in a single pass, only to wonder which "thing" improved (or degraded) the mix.

From another forum:
" . . . if you watch the documentary Stones In Exile carefully, you'll be able to pick out some Fenders (silver face) and Ampegs, big and small. In Tarlé's photos, you can see a small Fender, a 2x12 type Fender, a huge Ampeg head (maybe a V2 but probably a V4) and a Gemini GV-22 . . . I was able to capture a couple shots in which you can see--if you know what to look for--a little Ampeg GU-12."

They were Ampeg endorsers during the '70s so most live gigs featured V4s and the like as their backline. I have seen pictures of them in the studio and the amps were mostly Fender: Champs/Deluxes/Twins, etc. Here's a YouTube vid of his live rig, circa 2006/7:
Allegedly he used a very early Twin on the Exile sessions. But there is a lot of speculation about what he used on particular songs.

You mean AD16X and DA16X, I presume . . . Yeah...didn't know there was a difference... Yes, models without the "X" are the previous generation.

Just ordered from VK, for the 2-bus: Rupert Neve 542 x2 Nice Matt! How are those 542's compared to the Slate VTM plug? I'll let you know when they arrive in a few days. But I have to say that I have become less satisfied with plugins that generate harmonics other than Decapitator. The clincher occurred when I bypassed the instance of UAD ATR102 on my 2-bus and the mix improved. I guess I am not satisfied at the moment with digital approximations, however close they may be. Plus, I just want to touch knobs. It's an old fetish of mine.

For now I'm running a pair of Slate Dragons on the drums. Sounds pretty good to my ears. Stick the Dragons on kick and snare with the TX5C's on the drums. Hmm, interesting idea. Gonna have to look into it.

I love a good Tele, the right one can be magical. Mine is an American Vintage '52 and the only thing I changed was to add a compensated saddle.

Thanks everybody, I'm gonna pass on this one, but I like the feature set of the Ghost a lot. Eight auxes, with two of them stereo. Hmmm, feed that outboard . . .

It is not modded, not the "LE" version, has the meter bridge and CPS 250 supply. May need some repair on 1 or 2 channels. Looks fairly clean in pictures but I have not contacted the seller yet and his description is a bit vague. Also, what is the value/cost of modding it? Is modding a must or optional? I will not be using it to record, just at mix-down, so I wonder if modding the busing and output sections will be enough - if even required.
