Yeah I guess there is a scoop in the high end of D that hollows out the sound a little. That progression is hard to listen to objectively as everyone has The Silver Bullet production burned into memory.

This is good stuff. I got the results from Ragan and it's not what I expected. There are definitely two different mics here, and one is a major player, one is relatively unknown. Listening to other clips of the unknown mic, I think it might have sold me on a pair.

First of all, killer acoustic sound on all mics. Is that an old Guild? It had that sound. I dig them all, but for critical listening purposes I prefer B & C. There is a more low end which draws me in a little more. In a brighter modern pop style production though A and D would probably mix a bit better, but it's really splitting hairs. You could make either work.

I'd never have believed in that whole thing but I picked up two different HD-28s on different occasions that absolutely made my ears stand up. Sounded so dry and woody and old. Both times it was only after strumming the thing and being so impressed did I notice it was the VTS thing. I had to have one. It does sound and feel older than it has a right to. Edit. I should add, in that Eagles clip (A/B) the right side is a 12-string. It’s a Martin too, can’t remember the model. It’s the cheapest one that still has a solid top. I actually really like it. B & D...
After listening to the wavs of A&B - yes, it's Soundcloud that's giving some of that top warble/washiness. The wavs sound incredible. From those two, B was my favorite and I think my favorite overall.

BTW - fantastic sound...Is that two guitars per side? One Nashville-strung on each side?

I haven't had a chance to listen yet (I'm laid up in bed with a really bad cold), but knowing ragan , I'd guess one of the mics is the SDC Warbler. The other one might be a KM84 if he got his hands on one. I always like your sounds, ragan ! I'm looking forward to hearing these once my ears aren't clogged up and I can go more than 3 minutes without sneezing.

It just conveniently puts the player right in the post and I’ve got a bunch of comparison files on my account.

I’m on holidays without even a pair of earbuds, so I haven’t listened yet. I’m very interested though! And I’m very intrigued, so I wouldn’t mind a PM with the mics, no need to know which is which.

I'm guessing one of these is the Warbler 127 with cardioid flat capsule and the other is a KM84, but I'm not sure which is which. A and B are really close. I like D better than C though. If I had to guess I'd guess that D is a km84 and C is the Warbler 127.

I like C best and D least. A and B are closer for me, but I like the added richness with B.

I discovered a site calked Audiomack which lets one upload .wav and .flac files unlike SC without a premium account. Although I haven't done a thorough test on the sound quality, it doesn't sound as funky to my ear as other places that offer this kind of service. audiomack.com

I preferred A & C (soundcloud). Didn't like the high end in the other examples. Good song choices too!
"I was a little too tall, Could've used a few pounds". .....
Doesn't that just go to show you that sometimes there's never a right mic but a few right choices that will please lots of people? All those clips are usable for sure.

I'm going against the grain and saying I prefer A and D, the brighter/thinner ones. They're both very good. The fine playing and recording helps obviously. One mic is "brighter", or you could say one has more low end. I think the "better" one here is track dependent. I'm thinking ahead, and would guess in a track, they sit better and not cloud the low end up.
Of course the other tracks are probably KM84's, or something higher end than A & D, but I'll stand by my choice.
By itself, or in a two mic singer/songwriter mode, I prefer LDC's for acoustic guitar, but in busier tracks, I like SDC's. Last summer in the Soyuz vs. Neumann shootout, in the solo acoustic guitar segment, more than 20 engineer/producers blindly chose the Soyuz 0-19 FET over the Neumann U67, U87, Soyuz -011, Soyuz 0-13 and one more SDC that was a new variation of the KM84 by Beezneez I think. The U67 was instantly a flashback to a Beatles sound, and I loved it, there wasn't a bad thing to say about it, but the 0-19 was the winner, with not one dissenting vote. Here you have two guitars, so that may have tipped my vote toward the "brighter" mic.

I think you can post answers now. Anyone new coming to the thread will have to listen on page 1 first, then see the reveal on pg. 2, so they won't be influenced.

This is neat. Seems like most people have chosen a mix of the mics, depending on the situation.

A - 3U Audio Warbler 127 (cardioid flat) B - Neumann KM84

And that's why I love my 127s. Two matched pairs, with shock mounts, new in a nice wood box for what I would pay for a single KM84. Now if I could only use them as well as ragan does...
