What the world needs is a reissue A very limited reissue would be good!! Say 500 pieces, 300 of them reserved for matched pairs.

A couple of weeks ago there were a handful of KM86’s on musicgorround’s site it was serious case of where can I get a bunch of cash quickly, well someone else had the cash😥 You gotta stay on top of Music Go Round's offerings as they change quite quickly! And yes, have a couple K parked in your PP account for impulse purchases.

I’m waiting to hear if Neumann still has new KK83 capsules available. I can’t get a straight answer. I asked about the kk84 caps a month or so ago and my distro said Neumann said they didn’t make them anymore.

Give the Neumann Service dept. a ring, sales guys don’t know because it’s considered a part, not a product.

Damn that’s the first time I’ve ever heard of music go round It was started as High Tech Consignment in Minneapolis in the 80’s and man in those days it was the hidden gem in used pro audio. Then in the early 90’s the guy who owned Sports Go Round bought them, he took it in a MI direction and the stores bought the used gear rather than consignments. Prices went up in general, it was dumbed down franchised Store owners have to buy X amount of new gear from the company at higher prices than most could get from distributors. Some nice stuff flows through from time to time but you have to constantly watch the inventory prices do not always reflect condition etc. I problably bought 80% of my first studio and live rig from High Tech, it was always worth the 3 hour drive, I’ll admit to buying and flipping a bunch from MGR, but I’ll say this from my days in TX, there were 2 stores in the Houston area and neither was quick at adding stuff to the Web site and more likely to deal face to face.

For a number of years I was very good at always having a liquid gear acct, but man as the biz changes it’s getting harder and harder to do so. I wish somebody had told me how expensive a teenager is!

Just wondering how much equity I got in mine when I bought them 2 years ago. I know I have a bunch of equity, but curious... Kind of silly really, cause I'm never selling them. At this point, probably my most used mic. (mics - pair)

Given how hard they are to find, and how great they are that's actually a pretty fair price I think. Of course depending on condition. I got a pristine matched pair for $1200 each. I was dancing..... Took me 10 years to find them. Got a pair of KM53's at the same time, and those are.....well....freaking off the charts. The AC701's cost as much now as I paid for the mics. And I got a spare tube as well...

Thanks for the chart jampa. That's pretty interesting. I know the common belief is that the KM84 is ruler flat but to my ears, it has a slight upper mid push (3k-5k?) that adds to the clarity. Sometimes I wonder how accurate frequency charts are. I seem to hear things differently than they state most often. Comparing a KM84 and a MC930 on paper would make you think the MC930 is a brighter mic. I find the exact opposite to be true. The MC930 sounds very smooth without any push to the mids. The KM84 has a bit more presence to my ears. I like them both depending on the source. I tried both on violin the other day and the MC930 was the easy winner. But, on acoustic guitar, the KM84 almost always wins out.
it's funny how we obsess about these things and the average listener has no clue and doesn't care... and worse yet, they listen on the crappiest of all speaker. Makes you wonder why we spend our lives trying to perfect the recording process.

Yea I understand that km84 upper mid push thing. There'll also be more to the story that I don't understand. I do know that I love km84s!
I remember something Bob O said, like after everything, isn't it amazing how something can sound good to more than one person

Any frequency graph could be subject to smoothing but what makes even if a graph is accurate of the on axis response you have to remember you are also hearing th cumulative effects of the off axis response.

You guys inspired me to finally grab my own KM84. Being my other SDC's are old 451's (bit bright) and some McHugh Military AMM-68's (supposedly C60 clones though no idea how accurate that is, they're omni and a bit dark) I'm happy to have something right up the middle.

Ah! A km84 thread First post here and i have to say i do love the km84. It is the best investment any studio can do really. Foolproof, beutiful sounding on any acoustic source. This year i've tried quite a few nice mics on OH including u67, coles, aea84, 414eb with brass and came to the conclusion that i do like the km84 for OH the most. They just sound right, never bright just balanced and weighty. Get a pair and you will forever be thankful!

KM84s only sound like that on overheads if you have them up high enough! If they're within reach of the drummer whilst seated, they'll crunch a bit. I usually try to have them 6-8' above a kit, and then use a pair of U87s for room mics at distance and about 10-12' above 2. Beyer MC930s are the only microphones I sometimes like better than KM84s on drum overheads, and a matched pair is LESS than buying one average to poor condition KM84

In a great big room giving them some room to breath is usually a good idea. Last time i recorded drums i kept them at like 1-1.2m above the cymbals. Still sounded like close mics, maintaining a natural seperation. And Like you said complimenting them with ribbons or LDC are a great idea. The u87 is a good room mic for sure. But i will probably use my coles next time. Really dig that combo where the km84 stands for seperation and sparkle and the coles are there for adding some awesome weight to the drums. It just feels like 99% of all LDC are to bright, and that includes u67s too. Im doing maninly rock and metal so i usually record cymbal bashers though.

Started tracking the bass/drums for a modern pop album last night, and as no suprise, the Beyerdynamics MC930s completely overwhelmed the KM84s and the old Neumanns then slunk away to their corner, withdrawn and defeated.

I haven't used them much, but the 930's could never come close to 84's for my personal preference.
