Hmm $600? Not from what I'm seeing. $1200 USD is around the norm being asked for KM84's. Whether or not they're selling for that is another thing.

I am quoting ebay ended actions ACTUAL SOLD PRICE. Not sure what's so hard to understand. Since May 30 there are 7 sold examples at $1300 or higher, 9 sold examples under $835, 8ish examples in between those ranges. Fairly common to see some old timer cashing out the studio who puts a Buy It Now of anything from $600-$1200 on a pair, and usually look well cared for, there was a pair at $1080 and another at $1200 in that time. The $1080 pair looks like it might have been flipped in the $1200 ea range. here's the last time I looked: realgearonline.com/post/154950/thread

I paid about $1600 for an (almost) consecutive pair a couple of weeks ago. They were €725 each, he had nine and they all went in a couple of days.

Seems to me those prices are a little dated? YEs, average going rate these days is $1200 USD. Cheapest I've seen is $800 in 'fair' condition. I bought a couple around that price point.

My original boxed pair of near mint KM85's with accessories worked out at around $1350 USD (pair). By the time I purchased an additional pair of brand new KK84 capsules the mics effectively came to around $1200 USD each. However for near mint bodies with brand new KK84 capsules and a spare set of KK85 capsules I'm not complaining as they get used on every session and everybody that hears them loves them. I've never seen any KM84's under $1000 AUD ($750 USD) and at those prices they were pretty knocked around. However eBay often automatically filters out a lot of US listings that don't offer international shipping. I am quoting ebay ended actions ACTUAL SOLD PRICE. Not sure what's so hard to understand. EmRR I understand and am not arguing, I am just saying I have not seem 84's advertised that low, but I take your point that what they sell for is really what you are confirming. Funny that people would take $600 when after EB/PP fees and such they net so much less ?

There's always some % of people who sell something without doing any market research, and another % who don't care what the research says, they have a value in mind they are happy with. As in "I paid $300 30 years ago, I'll take $300 for them now".

eBay and Craigslist offer more headaches, but I see more deals there than, say, Reverb where it’s a more specialized seller population.

It's probably because they sell within an hour of listing and you have to use eBay's advanced search feature to find them.

There are deals to be had on eBay, but they often come from Russia or Hong Kong. Makes me nervous.

Yep, me too. I sometimes see interesting ads for gear from Japan, and I would never risk it, but ads from Russia make me even more nervous.

Most of the deals I listed were US

Most of the deals I listed were US If I log out of my eBay account and search using www.ebay.com instead of www.ebay.com.au I typically see more US listings which I don't always see under my local Oz search even though I have specified a "Worldwide" search. Also try searching using the German eBay listings and the Japanese eBay listings as gear often appears that you won't see in your local country searches. I think the reason for this is if the vendor does not offer international shipping your local searches can filter out these auctions.

No need to be worried about ordering from Japan either, best customer service in the world. Most second hand audio gear in Japan never sees eBay, it's all done on Yahoo Auctions, or at least it used to be when I lived there (99-11): auctions.yahoo.co.jp/A bit like AudioFanzine in France. You need to live in countries for a while to know where to score the best deals. Italy had one too only I forget the name...

Just heard back from Andreas Grosser in Germany, he has serviced my pair of KM84s (new caps, new resistors, new screws, full service and cleaning), and low and behold he now claims they are perfectly matched (they were 5dB apart before I sent them) so I will not need to fork out €1k for a new pair of capsules from Neumann. I am over the moon and can't wait to get them back! Extremely reasonable price too.

Where the hell is that 1801 deal on a pair of km84s? Came and went on ebay, happens every month. The reserve price on that pair was $1200, they might have just as easily listed them for $1200 Buy It Now.

Got them back this morning, sound great, they are still about 0.7dB off but I can live with that (better than 5dB off!) Turns out the capsules are from different eras, one I am guessing is original 1977 (no markings, flatter bevel, much lower serial number), the other one newer (labelled Cardioid KM84, contoured bevel, much higher serial number) but they sound tonally identical. That was on top of each other pointed at the guitar. Gonna try them in X/Y now. Very happy!
Considering looking for one or two KK83 Omni capsules now...

Got a pair for a little less than $2000 USD a few years ago. They are my overheads forever, and sometimes my acoustic guitar mic. Strangely enough, I've really enjoyed my KSM32 and Kel HM7u on acoustic guitars recently. I've even used a KM84 on vocals once, and it was pretty sweet!

I've been using the KM84s for a few weeks now. One of them I LOVE, the other sounds weird, and it's the capsule, for sure (have swapped them and the weirdness follows the capsule). I'm gonna risk just ordering a single new capsule from Neumann in the hope that it matches the "good" one better. They are definitely not "tonally identical" as I stated above! Just wanted to gush a bit though, I am floored by this thing. Been doing a lot of mono recording with acoustic guitar, strummed and finger picked, experimenting with position etc. There's definitely something to be said for backing it off a bit more than I usually do. 12" sounds great, but 15" sounds even better, 60dB gain with the TG2. I will keep trying different things. I've never had guitar recordings that sound so good and right, whether I'm recording at 44 or 96. It really is insane/magical, big smiles all round. Sounds like a record with very minimal EQ needed (HPF, little bit of bass cut, little bit of mid boost). Does anyone have any tips for doing the "search for the best mic position while playing guitar and wearing headphones" for a solo performer/recorder? If only I had an assistant. I guess keeping the mic stationary on it's stand, but moving around it with the guitar while listening and playing? Would love to be able to really hone in on the best sound for this guitar/room combo.

Just press rec and move the chair. Take a listen, done. Remember to gain up the more distant takes.

Also, it’s difficult without knowing your room but take off the rug if there is one, or pick a spot with wooden floor.
