I know when I walk into my room and see my mint matching pair of KM84 with original shock mounts sitting in my grand piano, I am inspired. I have them set up like Gus Dudgeon did for Elton John and it sounds fantastic. I picked up the idea from Val Garay and it works. I've done the matching U87s, the 6 mic configs with a 251 room mic. This setup is simple and sounds like radio. VAL: "My favorite piano to record is a pre-WWII Steinway B 7′ Grand (http://www.steinway.com/pianos/steinway/grand/model-b/). The amount of punch and size of that piano has been unmatched in my experiences. My mics of preference are a pair of AKG 452EB’s, but you can also use AKG 451B’s. I place them on the inside facing down at the strings at an angle of about 15 degrees towards the pianist. The mics are just about centered with middle C on the keyboard and the capsules are spaced between 15 and 20 inches from each other. The angle between the two mics is about 75 degrees with the capsules about an inch off of the strings and 3-5 inches back from the hammers. I learned this technique from sessions with Elton John’s producer, Gus Dudgeon, back in the early ‘70s at the Sound Factory, Hollywood. We were doing strings and horns on “Philadelphia Freedom.” I couldn’t believe how huge the piano sounded. I’ve been micing pianos this way ever since and it never fails to produce a massive and wide sound." Can I get a video of you setting this up and testing please? I am completely perplexed!! When I try this, all I get is hammers and dampers!

KM84 prices won't be dropping anytime soon. Neither will U87's, U67's, U47's, 251's or C12's. Only up.....

Mine's already convinced. I should come visit again and we could introduce the girls to each other and send them shopping for investment shoes. I'll bet they come back and agree with microphone investment . . . or we'll both start smoking again and there goes $3000 a year up in smoke! That'll learn 'em

Just got one of my best snare drum sounds ever. KM84 at the usual position into a Chroma in N mode, LF boost, really pushing the transformer. Sounds like a record already.

That'll do it. 84 on the side of the shell works great too as a secondary "snappy", transient rich option. And of course the Chroma.... LOL Nuff said. Awesome!! Still...putting an 84 within harms way of some drummers always gives me pause for thought.

The problem with "investing" in pro audio or other things you love is that you can never sell them. At least I can't - I guess my wife will have no problem after I croak. While alive though, she knows they aren't an "investment" - they're toys. LOL
Maybe john is immune to the "always keeping it" syndrome though??

Mine arrived with Andreas Grosser in Germany today, for service, be interested to know what they do with them! Sennheiser UK spare parts site saying they are currently out of stock of replacement KK84 capsules. I have mailed them to see what's up, was hoping to buy a pair.

Seems to me those prices are a little dated? People keep saying they are $1200+, and there are indeed ended pairs at $3K, but anytime I look back there's also stuff in the range I just listed. Like the Buy It Now $1200 pristine pair, I've seen the same thing at $600 for a pair. You could have to buy a capsule at either end of the spectrum, or not.

I bought my all original, sequential pair from a gentleman in Belgium with original cases, shock mounts, and boxes for under $3,000.

So that’s more like $1300 each, not $600 ?

Don’t get me wrong an 84 for 6 bills sounds great, but I haven’t seen a price that low recently, must be looking in the wrong places !
