I've been really digging mine on snare and acoustic guitars. As I suspected a nice balance between the 451eb's and tube omnis, however besides the tonal balance they feel a touch more refined that both, just sound right. I particularly like how unoffensive the HH bleed is when micing snare.

Yes, I've finally finished my search for the perfect pair of acoustic guitar mics. Just happy they sound so good on other stuff too. Selling my AA CM48T vocal tube LDC because of them.

No offense to all my drummer friends, maybe a tiny bit but, just keep that thing so it is physically impossible for it to be hit with a stick. I know a fairly successful producer who always used a Calrec under the snare, I asked why. He replied “ because it’s matching twin sounded like ass because of drummers and their natural ability to expensive rare things.

Ah! A km84 thread First post here and i have to say i do love the km84. It is the best investment any studio can do really. Foolproof, beutiful sounding on any acoustic source. This year i've tried quite a few nice mics on OH including u67, coles, aea84, 414eb with brass and came to the conclusion that i do like the km84 for OH the most. They just sound right, never bright just balanced and weighty. Get a pair and you will forever be thankful! Two things on that bit about overheads... 1. KM84s only sound like that on overheads if you have them up high enough! If they're within reach of the drummer whilst seated, they'll crunch a bit. I usually try to have them 6-8' above a kit, and then use a pair of U87s for room mics at distance and about 10-12' above 2. Beyer MC930s are the only microphones I sometimes like better than KM84s on drum overheads, and a matched pair is LESS than buying one average to poor condition KM84 I really like the sound of a KM84 on snare BUT they do overload easily unless the drummer is a soft hitter. Looking at the schematic I am tempted to try and modify the internal pad (15pf capacitor) to give -20db or even -30db of attenuation instead of the standard -10db.

If it's not me playing drums it's our drummer who's also an engineer, keeps opportunities for non-musical accidents to a minimum compared to my days of recording wild bands.

Started tracking the bass/drums for a modern pop album last night, and as no suprise, the Beyerdynamics MC930s completely overwhelmed the KM84s and the old Neumanns then slunk away to their corner, withdrawn and defeated. How high do you put the beyers above the kit? The same 6-8' the 84s go?

Just my opinion, but I'd think the MC930 would be a bit better (to my ears) for overheads, compared to the KM84. I much prefer the KM84 on acoustic guitar but I think the slight upper mid push of the KM84 would bring up too much cymbal for my liking. I try to keep my spaced pair overheads at about 48" from the center of the snare to each mic. Works for me.

To me the beauty of the 84 is the amount of detail it reveals without being bright. A touch of eq. and it fits perfectly into a mix.
