I've been using the KM84s for a few weeks now. One of them I LOVE, the other sounds weird, and it's the capsule, for sure (have swapped them and the weirdness follows the capsule). I'm gonna risk just ordering a single new capsule from Neumann in the hope that it matches the "good" one better. They are definitely not "tonally identical" as I stated above! Just wanted to gush a bit though, I am floored by this thing. Been doing a lot of mono recording with acoustic guitar, strummed and finger picked, experimenting with position etc. There's definitely something to be said for backing it off a bit more than I usually do. 12" sounds great, but 15" sounds even better, 60dB gain with the TG2. I will keep trying different things. I've never had guitar recordings that sound so good and right, whether I'm recording at 44 or 96. It really is insane/magical, big smiles all round. Sounds like a record with very minimal EQ needed (HPF, little bit of bass cut, little bit of mid boost). Does anyone have any tips for doing the "search for the best mic position while playing guitar and wearing headphones" for a solo performer/recorder? If only I had an assistant. I guess keeping the mic stationary on it's stand, but moving around it with the guitar while listening and playing? Would love to be able to really hone in on the best sound for this guitar/room combo. My advice get a friend to help, either playing or moving the mic around.

Thanks for tips, room is parquet (wooden floor), have a big rug I record on, you think it will sound better with the rug off, WITH all those reflections? I will give it a try!

I tend to go for about 8" off the neck/body joint straight on. Occasionally I will add an over the right shoulder but more often than not lately I keep it to the one mic. To me, that is usually the sweet spot on most guitars and sounds like what I expect to hear. I've seen others mic the body, just below the fingerboard. For me, that sounds a little hard but experimentation is always good.
Setup a mic and then press record and speak the position, play a bit, change positions and speak again, play again. You can try half a dozen options, cut the file and make them start from the same point on different tracks. Jump back and forth between the tracks to hear the differences. That's what I did when wrestling with mic placement on my upright piano. After listening back, it was obvious which mic position sounded best.

So far have been preferring the sound a little further back, but do need to experiment more.

My pair were €1400 but needed a service, (another €240), and capsules still sound quite different so I need to buy a new one which will bring the price to above what you paid. But I think they are worth it!

These things are one of my weaknesses...I spent a whole day comparing to the Soyuz SU-013 when I had my last one and ultimately thought any difference was subjective...but reading this thread again makes me want another one. I keep thinking “maybe my last one was futzed up...”

Nah.. Their both so good, they're seductive. The KM84 is just one of the greatest mics ever made, it sounds great on almost everything without too much fuss for placement. The 0-13 is like a modern version of it, more gain, cleaner, a pinch more warmth and high end. So, you can't go wrong with either of them.

Beware of Neumanns that look too good because the bodies are available as replacement parts.

Not any more according to Klaus on another forum, apparently he bought up the last few spare bodies they had a few years ago, Bob. The KK84 capsules are still available as of a month ago.

My take FWIW after owning a pair and using those same for years prior to owning is that they are a great universal mic but they won't cut your lunch or do your washing etc. i.e. there are others that will do the same or better sometimes and that may be a Soyuz in some situations although I have not used a Soyuz. The prevailing opinion is they are the Grand Poo Bah on acoustic but again it's instrument dependant e g my Stan 87 is it's equal, at least on a great Maton I'm recording at the mo. As to you John, I'm sure one of our fellow board participants with a known great 84 would lend you one for a few days to mollify your worries. (I'm in Australia so its impractical to be me). Cheers,Ross

Not many.
lando, yes, the Soyuz 0-13 is that good. I'd be hard pressed to choose if you offered me either one.

Yes, getting a new first class mic that sounds like that with a warranty is cool.

And then we could fill forums deliberating if it's as good as original.
