Dallas, to answer your question about my capsule. Perhaps you are describing this in a way that I'm misunderstanding. AKG only used 2 brass parts for its backplate for each half. The backplate itself and then a screw in delay baffle. This was then inserted into an acrylic ring. I use similar 3 pieces but my brass parts are permanently bonded to each other before being attached to the acrylic. I only build capsules. I've been working with this capsule for more than 15 years and know enough about the technical workings of capsules to execute a capsule in the most efficient manner to achieve my end. I've made capsules of all different materials, even plasticized paper, pcb's etc. Just to add, your internal pics are great. A very clean build.

Tim, I think you make a very good sounding capsule. I'm not trying to be rude by asking you about the details of its inner construction. I appreciate the purchase of your capsule a few years ago. Thanks, Dallas Upton

If the above video is in reference to 251s, all I see are AKG C12s.
Even Michael Jackson is singing into a C12.

Sorry if there's a delay in my postings, I'm in the middle of playing a gig Dallas, I didn't think you were being rude. I asked you about your product, you can ask me about mine I love the Vintech we have. I visit Naples, Fla from time to time. Perhaps one of these times I can stop by your shop and we can play a little guitar. Tim, Yes please give me a call anytime you're in the area and come by the shop and we can hang out and play some guitar. It would be great to meet you in person. Thanks, Dallas

Hey guys, I have been a friend of Dallas's for a number of years now. I was very excited when he started digging into the manufacturing of some mics. I can tell you, and you can see from the photos, that Dallas has cut no corners. Dallas is like many us, a true fan of music and what makes sound/recordings musical. He has done his homework on these mics. As soon as I can, I will be getting a 251. His mics are truly beautiful in all aspects. I had originally planned to DIY some 251's but now I need the Upton 251! I know the price is a stretch for many including myself. However my thinking is after years of DIY and using many new and vintage mics, I will say these things are really priced to move (look up what an original cost, yikes). I have heard plenty of 2500-5500 mics that are currently being made that I have no desire to ever own. The Upton 251 or his C12 are mics you will want in your locker. I hope Dallas sticks around to talk about the mics some more and his other gear. He's a true music guy and would be great to have around. Also, Dallas has spoken very highly of Tim's capsules to me many times. We both own Tim's capsule and enjoy them. timcampbell you have great sounding capsules.

It's pretty, all that pretty machinery and making all their own parts pretty much explains the price. I do wonder though how many mics they think they will sell for that price as a unknown entity and how many mics they have to sell to pay the bills! Depends on the sound. A 251 is unmistakable. If it gets close, I'm guessing he can sell a few

Holy Shit! Listen to this. Dallas sent this to me...it's a clip from the C12 they're making. So - same capsule as the 251. The clip is from two years and several revisions ago...but this is really, really impressive if you ask me. That top is pretty damn unbelievable. whitney james world on a string test2.mp3 (823.38 KB)

impressive the way it captures the transients on the guitar but no sibilance in the vocal but nice clear presence and tone: that's a very well behaved mike

Apparently it was in the same room and the guitar bled, but it was mic'd with another mic...The C12 is on the vocal...

Bank balances and cautious wives are overrated. This from the man who just bought 8 vintage mics. LOL My wife was a bit bent at the whole thing, but she'll get over it (love you sweetheart!), and the 53's, 86's, 140's, 170, and SM7's are awesome!
