FWIW I like my original UREI LA-3as way way way more than UA's LA2a or 3a reissues.

The Splices are AWESOME, but not even close to a 3a sound IMO.

FWIW I like my original UREI LA-3as way way way more than UA's LA2a or 3a reissues. I've had mine here along side a new 3a reissue and a handful of Blackbird's units. Best sounding. Thing is--all the old units sound a little different both in passing signal, but the t4 action remained fairly consistent....the new ones all have VERY different T4 action. I know--I have one of those in my LA610. I don't mind it--but, it's more grabby thus less natural. End of the day, I've made peace with letting it go. It's been a solid companion for a lot of years, but the vintage market is simply too good to ignore.

FWIW I like my original UREI LA-3as way way way more than UA's LA2a or 3a reissues. +1 Back in the day there wasn't much out there and at that time and they were just tools of the trade. I bought my Urei LA3A pair for $750. Along with 4 - Urei 1176s ( D-versions ) for $150.00 each. I still use these units today. I haven't compared them to any clones because I haven't thought there was a need too.

I know I posted in this thread but I swear I had no recollection of it. Btw - I thought UREI LA3A's were going for like $1500.

Depends on what reference you want to use. Recent sold Ebay are closer to 2300-2500. I've had people offer $1500 cash locally when I put it up last year....which honestly is always because there are people who that's their business--buy locally in saturated markets like ours....sell on Ebay for profit. So, that's certainly on the low side....since they have already calculated they'll make money selling it on eBay or Reverb AFTER fees are paid buying it for that....
But, I think Winetree meant whenever he bought them.

"But, I think Winetree meant whenever he bought them." 1981 Actually. I traded a pair of DBX 160VUs for the LA3As. They were asking $750 for the pair of LA3As and I thought it was a fair trade. It seems that gear then was pretty cheap by today prices, but in 1981 that was still a lot of money.
