kenetek or drip are the best I know of right now, I think there is something coming down the pike that all La3a owners are going to be stoked over!

Another point... Ragan mentioned "Clamped down"? That's what an actual LA3a does... it clamps down! It's why there's a love/hate relationship there. :-)

Im interested because I was thinking about getting an LA-3A style compressor as I do a lot of acoustic guitar recordings.
I was looking at a few options including the DIY SA-3A from serpent.
If Ragan would be willing to share the dry file so someone could run it through an SA-3A that would be awesome and would make a good comparision I guess...
Obviously conversion is a factor but it would give people something of the same material to listen to?
Thanks, Matt

I'm happy to email the 88.2/24 WAV to someone if they want it.

Thanks, Matt mines flat busted right now, but the SA3A's is actually better than the real LA3A's i've used, the gap had some of the vibe, but it kinda shrunk the sound of ragans acoustic quite a bit from what i heard, fine for busier mixes, but singer songwriter stuff wouldn't be suited from what I heard there.

I've used a lot of hardware but never an LA3a so my entire impression of them has been from the UAD and Waves plugs. The GAP is significantly better in terms of weight and depth. Plus I just like hardware. I'd be up for swapping some things out if I could confidently believe it would improve the sonics. For the moment though, I'm real happy with it. It has a cool character that I will find useful and it was $500.

Could you record another take noting settings and making note of the gain reduction and shoot that to me? Yeah you bet. I just printed something from a track I was working on. It was stereo so I ran both tracks individually. It'll be easier to just do a mono source. I'll track something basic and post it and send you the dry file.

ragan - thanks for taking the time to do this. I haven't had a chance to listen but will in the next couple hrs. Question - are the T4B's socketed and plug and play? Reason I ask is because I just checked out the Kenetek T4B's on their site and they're $99. They look like they have pins and plug in? Obviously I'm not a tech but if it's that easy I'd be looking to give it a listen if I bought one..... Nice simple upgrade, anyone know? tonycamphd? www.kenetek.com/T4AT4BUnits/KenetekT4BModules/tabid/300/Default.aspx

So? I had a couple phone convos with the Kenetek guy, I Personally felt a bit of making it a bigger deal than it was, of course jmo, and I bought a pair.

It's why there's a love/hate relationship there. :-) what makes you say that? I have kenetek's in my first Sa3a Why would you need to ask? Don't you like the Kenetek in your SA3a? If you don't like it, say so. I have no connection to them and just my observations. Have you compared any others with it? What about recovery time? The time it actually takes for the photcell to completely stop it's function, not when it lets go (release time). Can't you tell a difference? That's where the Kenetek has the edge, IMHO. Oh of course, I find the Kenetek quicker in general, not 1176 quick but a lot less sluggish than some original T4B cells or the Drip. You have to give Drip props for emulating the super slow early ones, which a lot of people still like... I guess due to the 'compression smear' you get from slower acting and reacting T4B cells.

I gotta agree 100% with the keneteks having the edge. Technical reasons aside I thought they operated better as well and I don't mean slow vs fast recovery times. I ended up picking out the medium recovery time offered by kenetek for my la2as that seemed to still capture the old familiarity of the la2a but was far more usuable in more applications.

Yes i like the rig a helluvalot, is it due to the keneteks? also, I'm not doubting your opinion, I was just asking why you'd say that thinking maybe you had a specific technical reasons? ADSR cycle's are very similar even between fast and slow opto's, the biggest difference is slower is(for me) generally more useful as it leaves transients in tact, it'd be very nice to be able to switch between fast and slow from the front panel. I guess i should also add that recovery time is so long on even fast ones that it's not even worth mentioning as the next instance of compression will be far quicker than 5 seconds, and never approach the 3 minutes i read somewhere haha, it takes more time to fully recover than the duration of most songs, but again, i'm not an expert on the function of the T4B's, i'm all ears to learning.

I would like to say a massive thank you to Ragan and jcoutu1 for doing this! Really, really appreciate it guys!!! Give people a chance to listen to the differences before deciding. My plan was SA-3A , with the hairball transformer kit and Kenetec T4B's... looking forward to the results Thanks, Matt

Yeah i don't know diddlysquat about t4b cells except the warning from fellow diy friends to not to try and make my own despite the cost reduction. In the end everyone agreed just order from drip or kenetek. And so i did and i found in my observations that the fast recovery was in fact to fast. It was while mixing a dynamic singer that the slow t4bs seemed to shine. It would actually probably be worth it to have an la2a with a slow recovery cell just for such applications. As of right now my d-la2a has a matched pair and i plan on switching the pots for switches pretty soon here and trying it as the masterbuss comp for awhile instead of the gssl with permanent turbo that i only use with the lightest of settings at the moment. Although the new dramner bus comp has certainly caught my eye and id getting good reviews. Has anyone used a linked la3a on their master buss?

ragan - I finally got to listen and I really like the acoustic guitar with this comp. It's not clean or fast (obviously being opto) so I can see certain people not liking it but, for me, I think it's great. I like the smooth, slightly spongy midrange and the little fireworks on the top end that this imparts. I imagine it would settle quite nicely in a mix. Thanks again for taking the time. I'll be thinking about one of these......

Has anyone used a linked la3a on their master buss? I haven't tried, but that's the idea with the Opto section of the Shadow Hills Mastering Comp right? Might be cool in tandom with the SSL type.
