ragan - I finally got to listen and I really like the acoustic guitar with this comp. It's not clean or fast (obviously being opto) so I can see certain people not liking it but, for me, I think it's great. I like the smooth, slightly spongy midrange and the little fireworks on the top end that this imparts. I imagine it would settle quite nicely in a mix. Thanks again for taking the time. I'll be thinking about one of these...... I like it too. I really like it just leveling off a db or so after an 1176. On lots of things.

Here's an example. WA76 --> COMP-3a. Pretty squished up but I like it for some things. Lots of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young records (among others) had that smashed acoustics thing going where the guitars become more rhythm section than harmonic instrument.

Also, man does Soundcloud just sound bad? I feel like I'm hearing all sorts of artifacts that aren't there in the WAV itself.

It may well do its hard without hearing the original wav. try uploading something to Facebook it is literally terrible. I started a thread here but either no one has experienced this problem or they are using different format to upload than I am...

Wow no one here digging this great color box... ! I love this thing I have 2 and can link them also... Hmm, I found it more clean than the 1176 in those samples. Which was nice. It sounds really good to me.

Yes it is cleaner as in compression, but I don't know if you can hear the top end change with the MP3... But it warms up the whole thing and adds size(low mids). There is also a high pass knob that will retain some high end I think.. I have to play with it more.

Plugged it up and first impressions are very favorable. More to come. see if a bottom heavy source maintains its extension once you pass it through? curious minds want to know 8) Getting ready to try it on bass but I've printed 3 sources through it vocal, EG, acoustic. I just ordered another one as well. Should have it here tomorrow to round out the pair. It's a really good comp, Tony. Some people will find it the slightest bit grainy but I've ran sources through that were recorded with my 992 e.g. and it's perfect. Adds a little top end (which is really nice for me), and sets things right out there loud and proud. I'm sure it could benefit from a mod here or there but sounds very good right out of the box. I'll be curious to see how much praise this comp gets because it sounds really good to me. Getting ready to track bass. I'll report back.

I find this Gap high biased which is normal for Chinese gear. I've been rolling it off with great success.

I find this Gap high biased which is normal for Chinese gear. I've been rolling it off with great success. I find the GAP version to be a little fuller in the low mids, which you could call weight or mud, depending on how it hits you (and the source). Interesting that you're hearing the main difference in the top. Either way though, I find the GAP to be a really nice little comp for 500 clams. I'm gonna have a lot of uses for mine, that's for sure.

Also, I'm pretty sure the GAP version is louder. I RMS match all my comparison clips but I got the Serpent one from Jesse and I'm in an annoying as hell limbo right now. I needed to upgrade my OS to Zion or Foxglove or Dandelion or whatever the hell stupid name the newest Apple OS got and when I did, I went into 'unsupported' territory with PT11. I knew I was taking a risk. The only headache I've run into is that the "Import Audio" function in PT doesn't work. So I couldn't pull Jesse's clip into the session and match it to the one I sent him.
Anyway. I think the GAP is louder.
