40 dB....the classic vintage fixed gain American preamp! I often hear it get crunchy though and it bothers me...I usually end up at 30 on the input. Weird... my RTZ does the same at 40 but I really like what it adds to most voices .. 35 is clean regardless of how you trim ( or don’t ) the output. Hit 40 & its beauty, pre sings even tho you have to trim the output to prevent clipping the circuit ( which prob affect S N R. ) I used to track real low & use trims boost to gain stage. Recently the RTZ preamp is on 40, Output 3 o clock ( max output is 5 o clock ) hitting -5 to -10db on the WA76 on lead vocals loving the result on 80-90% of vocals. I would have to work harder & do testing to achieve this with UAD preamp sims tracking into console committing to a 1176 plug. Once I found the sweet spot I could save it as a console preset tho & adjust for each diff vocal. Not slight to UAD in the least they make awesome sounding stuff.

Maybe it’s the type of music I mostly do...genre - lots of dynamics between verses and choruses. So I’ll sometimes find one click up is good for verses and one click down for chorus...but I usually just try and sing the highest dynamic and set there - then add in the comp.

I've been going around 30-35dB myself now on my Neve 1073DPX. Its working well. On some occasions I hear a little bit of crunch, especially on the jazz bits where we might be a little closer to the mics, which is fine. I'm trying to avoid the crunch on the classical stuff.
