Me too. Dan's U47 sounds incredible and I've long been eye-balling the Heiserman.

Yes John. If you look around a decent U47 is going for 14-16,000 dollars, an Ela M251 between 20-25,000 dollars though I haven't seen any at 20,000 in a while. Which do you think is the better mic? (U47 vs M251)?

Well I own a U47 and an Ela M251 along with many other wonderful mics and I will say it is easier spending that money on a microphone knowing that you will get your investment back if you decide to sell rather than buying a 3-5000 dollar mic knowing you have lost half your investment as soon as you open the box. NEVER BUY NEW.

Shoot your right between Nashville and Raleigh. He's also stuck in the middle of a Wagon Wheel song. <sigh>

Lets all meet up in Asheville..!!! I'm down. I don't really have places or anything for anyone but I would be more than happy to participate in a gathering, maybe bring some of my own mics I have built. Maybe one of the studio owners in town could open up for a small gathering? It would be nice to meet some people. I could make some phone calls, haha. Mixerman is here too, and Ryan Earnhardt from Creative Sound Lab, as well as many other audio people.

Or you could come to our studio at East Tennessee State University. We're got an API 1608 and good musicians.

But I'll be hard pressed to buy bread and water for a while. I can help you, Dan. Send me the mic and I'll be happy to arrange for these to arrive immediately at your destination of choice. Problem solved. No need to thank me. That's what us RGO friends are for. Attachments:

I hate to say it, but I preferred the U87 in Dan's shootout. Maybe it's because I used one every day for 12 years before selling all my home studio gear back in the day.
A few years ago, I was lucky to be invited by Jerome Mason to the fantastic Barbershop Studios to compare their vintage U47, M49, U67, C-12 and my Blackspade UM17R and my Soyuz 0-19. I discovered the U67 was the better fit for my voice. I wished it was the U47, (which was my 2nd choice) because there were some good U47 style mics around 2 G's then, and few if any U67 style mics then.
Time passed and I sold the Blackspade (a great mic by the way), kept the Soyuz FET 0-19 partly because it won an acoustic guitar shootout at a different studio against a vintage U67 and U87 with 20 engineers and producers unanimously choosing it, blind, and it sounded damn good on lead vocals too. It falls into the same workhorse category a U87 does and costs 2G's. not $3,500.
Now, unless I hit the lottery, I would simply say to Dan and all my good friends here, you gotta try the Chandler REDD mic. I believe it's as good as the best U47's, and I don't say that lightly. And it costs a hell of a lot less. I doubt you'd lose quite as much should you ever want to resell.
Where I've gotten really lucky recently is with the Stam SA67 MK II with the new Tim Campbell capsule. It's just killer and Vincent, Ragan, Kcat and cowboycoalminer know I'm incredibly sensitive to mic nuance and just can't settle if it doesn't have some honest mojo. The earlier versions were perfectly fine, but the new one's got it, a real deal vibe. I can't wait to do a shootout with a vintage 67 and I'd really love to compare it mano a mano with the Neumann reissue.
Congrats on getting the U47 Dan, you're tracking and musicianship are outstanding and your voice is like a fine wine.

This particular older 87 in the video (not mine) is quite nice and brighter than our 87ai. The owner sent it to John Peluso a while back. Second hand knowledge is that John brought it back to spec and didn't modify anything.
Listening with good headphones, you'll hear the 87's hyped and unnatural sibilance - something I think we all have gotten used to hearing over the past 25 years.
At the end of the day, a touch of Pultec on the 47, or even a different preamp can give you the sparkle you want. And it will still look sexy doing it.
