And a little video deomstration. I appreciate all the good vibes from everyone in the forum. No buyer's remorse! You know those youtube videos you can watch all the way through without pausing? Well, this was one of those rare as hen's teeth ones for me. I am agog.

I wonder how it feels to own one of the best microphones in the world?

Honestly, at first it really doesn’t seem too different from other mics. I mean, it’s an LDC, the top end is controlled so that’s nice.. if I just put some de-esser on a cheaper mic.. then about 1 minute in: WTF!!! Like when suddenly the drugs kick in

I wonder how it feels to own one of the best microphones in the world? This thread has gone on way too long, but I gotta say it's something I've wanted for a long time. Everything along the way has just been a stepping stone toward this. The artists I work with spend their WHOLE LIVES perfecting their sound. The pick material, thickness, bevel angles...string brands, gauges, and formulae...the way they position their hands and fingers, the dynamics, tone...finding the instruments that inspire them...singers who work on intonation, pronunciation, phrasing, emotion...songwriters laboring over the last syllable... I've wanted the best for them!!! Fortunately, where I work we have a full mic locker of the common well-known utility mics in the $100 - $3,000 range. So, I don't personally need to worry about a facility, cue system, 10 sets of headphones, etc. I just want to have a half-dozen or so AMAZING mics to use and for investment. Now I have the U47, four KM84s, six of Artur Fisher's ribbon mics, and maybe three or four sub-$400 mics to beat around the house with. I can walk into any session now and augment what the studio has. It also takes an amazingly supportive wife.

Okay, okay! JUST ONE MORE... This is it, I swear. I am so vicariously pumped for you, Dan. They both sound great but of course the U47 just has that huge, velvet sound. What a mic you've got there.

It's wonderful that you got such a great mic Dan.
It's funny, when I bought my Ela M251, which costs about 10,000 dollars more than a U47 and mentioned it in the latest gear thread I couldn't get a rise out of anyone. I was so surprised.

I was thinking about that too! The ELAM 251 doesn't have anywhere near the icon quality as the U47. Even though it's a spectacular microphone and even more valuable. I blame it on the beatles and frank sinatra. And the fact that U47 was first. And the fact that ELAM 251 is yellow.

Yea, but what the St. James mix really needs is to have the trumpet compression sidechained to the ride cymbal, each individual instrument bussed to a different programmed reverb, then everything multed to a music aux for M/S stereo widening and finally an L1, L2 AND L3 on the master bus to limit it within an inch of it's life.
Then it would be great.
As it is, it's still pretty good.

Love your work Dan. For mine the 47 really suited you but being picky I reckon neither mic was optimum for Sally; she’ s a great singer but like Alison Krause etc, that edgy female country singer sound is very hard to capture with a condenser and could possibly benefit from a ribbon. Having said that, the 87 is a great mic which only suffers because you’ve a great 47/ beside it. Thank you for taking the time to share - very educational. Cheers, Ross

"Grasshopper" (me!) asks... Dan could you give us a general idea, of how you did that recording? For example, how close are you micing the vocals? Etc. These are fantastic captures.
Those harmonies are amazing too. I'm learning "If I Can Only Win Your Love"-Louvin Bros. & Emmy Lou's version BTW. Both lead and harmony. Were the harmony parts recorded at the same time, or overdubbed?
With all due respect to Ross, IMHO Sally's Neumann vocal, is great "as is" too. Although I agree, a quality ribbon would be the alternative choice. (I love Alison's voice/fiddle playing (& Dan T.) too BTW) Thanks, Chris
