Any thoughts to share on the TAV, sean ? I haven’t had a ton of time with them because I’ve been working at a different studio this past week but quick test I’ve been enjoying them. Although the frequency points are the same, they aren’t as “sharp” sounding as a API 560. Sometimes that sound is cool on drums when you want a lot of point, but using the TAV on an upright bass I was really able to cut out sound resonance while add some finger noise and clarity…which is not easy to do without making it sound like crap. They also remind me of my Auditronics EQs where what looks like a lot of boost or cut still sounds smooth. I think they are keepers.

Yeah the fakes are out of control on Reverb.
But, I bought a UM57 that turned out to be fake, found where the pictures originated from, and show them to Reverb and I got a refund through Reverb pretty quickly. I’m 99% it was with PayPal and it definitely didn’t take a month

I’m actually grabbing a pair of TAVs next week from a friend, I’ll let you know!
The ODDs are based on the Auditronics console EQ, specifically the one that Purple rebuilt for Joel Hamilton at Studio G. My friend Ian later owned that console and I have a Grandson console myself. They are very forgiving EQs, the kind where you boost a lot and it doesn’t get harsh. They have pretty broad Q so they aren’t for “carving” but can definitely change the overall tone of a source with little effort

At some point I need to try a Hardy. I'd love a preamp which has a bit of that 1073 vibe, without the distortion. Not sure there is anything like that. The Phoenix Audio stuff might be a good Neve option with less color since it has a transformerless input. Not sure though, never owned one.

Hardy preamps are really wonderful...they work for everything in my experience. I think having a transformer really helps with vocals...GML...Benchmark...Millennia are all very fast but I find I like my Hardys more for vocals. I've always been interested in trying on of Jim's preamps. I've always been curious in the Radial Twin Servo preamp but never heard one...not sure if they are using 990 op-amps or not. Another option would be the Seventh Circle Audio J99, which is the Jensen Twin Servo circuit, and the T15, which is very similar to the Millennia.

I got a couple nice toys at great prices…pair of AKG D224’s, SansAmp Classic, Inward Connections Nitro (Wyn from Avalon had some crazy deals on 500 series stuff that would have drained my wallet if I’d walked around sooner)
And I sold the things I was expecting to sell, and it was a great hang. I was surprised I didn’t have more interest in my Korby Blue or my McIntosh 2100 but swap meets are definitely better for small items…not too many people looking to spend big bucks there. It was nice having it hooked up to my record player so I could spin some music all day

99% of them don't have a clue about what they are doing and what their expensive light up boxes are for. Steve Albini makes the most informative videos though. Weird. I can't stand his work or how he goes about it. I think even if you don’t like Steve the Electrical Audio video are incredibly informative and worthwhile. Easily the best free content I’ve come across. Personally I love his work with Nina Nastasia, Songs:Ohia / Magnolia Electric Company, The New Year / Bedhead, Robbie Fulks, Mono, Jarvis Cocker, Cinerama…but I guess that’s all stuff people don’t normal associate him with.

#1: No…once everything is organized and I’m familiar with the arrangement/instrumentation I start from the beginning
#2: No…but sometimes what helps me is if let’s say an acoustic guitar is very delicate in the intro and then is strumming in the verses and choruses and than takes a solo and then is back to picking at the outro I may split that into three different tracks so they can be EQ’d or whatever needs to happen separately. Also, it’s important to remember in a DAW everything can be automated so if there’s a setting that works for part of a song but not another, you don’t have to settle for something that’s part of the time…just automate it. Be it a threshold or an attack time of a EQ boost or cut…it can all be automated
#3: I usually insert the bus compressor once I have a decent static mix and know what’s going on and work into it. I also like to have an instance of EQ last on the mix buss, usually FabFilter, so while I’m working I can just grab a band a sweep around and if I go “oh it sounds nice when I boost the top end” I can find what instruments are benefiting from that and then do that on those tracks instead of having that EQ on the mix buss. The spectral analyzer and being able to solo listen the EQ band can be helpful. I do, however, find myself occasionally using something like Curve Bender to towards the end of a mix before the mix buss compressor (usually The Glue with an attack time of 10ms or 30ms and the fastest release time) and I might do a .5dB cut between 300-500Hz…sometimes a 50Hz boost, and sometimes a 12K shelf boost…again all .5dB. Maag EQ4 40Hz air band sometimes is the ticket…and sometime it’s 160Hz or 650Hz cut (again .5dB) can help. If I need to more than .5dB of EQ on the mix buss I go back into the track and find the problem because if you start doing more or less something is probably going to be effected negatively (something gets too thin…sibilance…harshness)

I find the 1178 and the Revision G/H 1176’s work really well for acoustic guitars…I don’t notice the “sucking” or “pumping” as much as I do with the older versions. Not color boxes or as great at making shit explode as other versions…but very useful if you’ve always wanted a more transparent 1176

Pair of Neumann KH420’s. Not too many of these in the wild so took a chance. Was on ATC 20’s which I really like except the low end was far too lacking especially after move to my bigger space and I didn’t want to put DSP in the path to align subs. ATC 150’s were the planned upgrade but alas the price tag was far too steep. Given I was on Neumann KH120’s before the ATC’s the 420’s are familiar just more of everything. Deeper low end and at volume which is great for tracking. They get loud. Like stupid loud but still sound balanced. Got to do some ATMOS mixing on these with the matching subs and it was very enjoyable. Congrats, that's a big purchase but a wise one for sure!

Picked up a Fredric Effects Utility Perkolator MKII…distortion circuit I’ve always been interested in but never tried. Also a Peluso 251 shock mount for my Upton 251, and a couple cheap omni dynamic mics to use for talk back.

This they don't demonstrate in the audio demos... Good to know, thanks Sean. Having the Pom unit racked you're equiped to compare the Pompyes and the Pynamics . When I had it in the rack with other stuff I would get a low frequency hum in my ADL-1500 and Compex…it was driving me crazy until I figured out the POM was causing the noise in other gear…now it sits across the room with the headphone hub. It is a great unit though. I got it when the pound was down and before the price increase. Pierre is great to work with and communicates with you every step of the way. If you are on a wait list he’ll let you know if an earlier slot opens up.

I have a POM PYE and it doesn’t play nice being racked next to other gear with transformers. Pierre mentions this in the manual, but I had to move it to the other side of the studio because it was causing hum in other pieces of gear, even with a rack space or two above and below. I’m surprised there isn’t some sort of shielding that could be used in case (like guitars)…

If you already have a 4 pin amphenol cable from some other mic, I really like the EV 636. I also think the VP64 is cool, as ericn suggested. It’s different than a 635A, but still in the dynamic omni family. It’s only $90 new, so it should fall in the $50 range. Like most Omni dynamics the 635 was designed as a handle Newsie interview mic, unlike the 635 it’s more mid forward designed to reject noise. The Shure is lighter as the housing is made from a really hard plastic. Every manufacturer has a handheld Omni dynamic ENG mic all will work fine for TB, the question is, is it worth a bit more for a 635a or RE50 for a flat very musical mic you will find other uses for? There is an old long handle Beyer that’s pretty musical but I can’t remember the model #. I’ve got a couple 635’s but occasionally use them, but I’d like to have some permanently set up talk back mics ready to go…but I put an offer in on a pair of VP64’s. Should tied us over until maybe making the upgrade to a Hearback Pro system, which have talk back built in…expensive and as much as I’d like an analog cue like a Mytek it’s not practical. 6 “more me’s” in the original Hearback often aren’t enough…wish people worked with a shared cue but again, not the reality for most musicians these days.

I've been on the hunt for $50 or less omni dynamic microphones for talk back in the studio. Found an Audio-Technica AT8004 and a Shure SM63...any other I should be on the look out for? I need about 4 more...

I recently picked one up a few months ago and I like it on harsh fiddles, overly bright acoustic guitars, and occasionally piano. Sometimes it sounds nice just running stuff through it. Damn it gets hot though

BPA is also very close to BSA which might cause confusion
