99% of them don't have a clue about what they are doing and what their expensive light up boxes are for. Steve Albini makes the most informative videos though.

Holy shit there’s some bad advice out there. That is all. There definitely is! The thing that has always puzzled me is that some people will take the worst advice from someone as if it’s gospel without having any idea what their work sounds like. It started on GS and it’s mutated into something even worse on YouTube. All it takes is for someone to have a strong opinion & for some reason that’s enough to fool some into thinking they know what they are talking about…it’s maddening. I think all YouTube vids and forum profiles should require a link to your work in the description/signature 😁

I've found the same thing. I work with a lot of younger (and green) wannabe engineer/producers. They watch a lot of videos but don't know who is legit and who is just talking a big game. Some of the advice is just horrible and really hurts a young engineer. I keep telling my clients that there is no one size fits all approach that will work. I tell them they have to listen and determine what it needs. Unfortunately, they just want to go with the "take all the 300hz out of a kick" type ideas. Then they apply that same rule to samples. They dig themselves in deeper and deeper.
There is no shortage of "experts" on YouTube.

Yeah, but what’s really fun is to sit down with your favorite alcoholic beverage and watch some you tube or tick-tok videos on something like electrical wiring, you know something that can kill you. It leaves you wondering how these guys are still alive!

I was feeling adventurous and ran a 240v/30a outlet myself last year....and man it took me a while to find some responsible people. Definitely some videos out there that if they didn't kill you during the install, would probably cause some serious issues later down the road. There are a ton of videos about upgrading the amperage of your breaker with no consideration of your existing wire gauge. Maybe you should have to pass some test to start an electrical channel on YouTube? Ha...come to think of it maybe you should have to pass a test to do a pro audio YouTube channel? Hopefully I'd pass 🤣

Whoever sounds more convincing and persuasive wins the minds of people, regardless of how wrong they might be. I mean, just look at the hordes of people that narcissists can hypnotize. Or look at politics.

Easily the best free content I’ve come across. Personally I love his work with Nina Nastasia, Songs:Ohia / Magnolia Electric Company, The New Year / Bedhead, Robbie Fulks, Mono, Jarvis Cocker, Cinerama…but I guess that’s all stuff people don’t normal associate him with.

Hey living in Galveston taught me any idiot with a drill screwdriver and pliers can play electrician inside their 4 walls. Now the truely scary one was one of those Buzzfeed lists with a construction rigger saying “ I don’t believe in gravity.” Knowing the safety standards of the entertainment riggers vs construction riggers I already avoided construction cranes, now I really distance myself.

Steroids are rough, actually coming off of 20 years of Fentanyl ( not street) was easier than a month of steroids!

Ahh , but there are some great ones ! That is classic, but I have to admit to seeing a couple of AE’s I worshipped over the years give advice that shows they probably didn’t pass high school physics!

Holy shit there’s some bad advice out there. That is all. Good advice is so scarce that it might be worthwhile to mention who is worth someone's time in YouTube. Here's my list: * Josh Seawell * The aforementioned Electrical Audio channel * Eric Valentine That's it. I'm pretty sure I'm not missing anyone. There's a lot of garbage and dogma out there.

I've seen so many people asking you to subscribe to "the channel", it's become a joke. So basically, people have the chance to be their own TV channel and it's incredibly seductive. So much so, that people with barely a little talent hype themselves for attention and to make money. "Engineers" and "Producers" telling you about their "5 ways to better bass" are regurgitating most of what they watched someone else say or do. I always wonder if they've written or produced even one song anyone actually cares about.
The thing that is helpful are certain DAW experts. I've learned a few important things about using Logic from Music Tech Help Guy and a couple of others. Like everything else, it's become personality first, qualifications last. I've met a few very popular "YouTubers" recently and in person, they were quite unimpressive. Unfortunately for them, you can't learn talent.

That's some serious shit, electrical work.

There are some paid service shenanigans that inflate some of these subscriber counts. It's a shame but you'll notice some channels with 6 figure subscriber numbers don't get nearly as many views on a given video as a channel with that many subscribers should. It's because a lot of the subscribers are bought and paid for bots.
