If I have a question, I just ask you guys. I don’t watch that YouTube mixing mess.

Haha so true! I was feeling adventurous and ran a 240v/30a outlet myself last year....and man it took me a while to find some responsible people. Definitely some videos out there that if they didn't kill you during the install, would probably cause some serious issues later down the road. There are a ton of videos about upgrading the amperage of your breaker with no consideration of your existing wire gauge. Maybe you should have to pass some test to start an electrical channel on YouTube? Ha...come to think of it maybe you should have to pass a test to do a pro audio YouTube channel? Hopefully I'd pass 🤣 Entertaining. But is it for real? I’d vote no. Especially that scene where he cuts to another shot when he’s electrocuted himself so much it caused him to jump back on his bed and convulse. Funny, but fake.

Weird. I can't stand his work or how he goes about it. I think even if you don’t like Steve the Electrical Audio video are incredibly informative and worthwhile. Easily the best free content I’ve come across. Personally I love his work with Nina Nastasia, Songs:Ohia / Magnolia Electric Company, The New Year / Bedhead, Robbie Fulks, Mono, Jarvis Cocker, Cinerama…but I guess that’s all stuff people don’t normal associate him with. steve knows his shit despite being a digital Luddite. That being said anyone who calls him a Luddite and then uses certain plugins is pretty much telling a teetotaler that drinking is okay in moderation and then getting shitfaced and doing lines in the bathroom.

The Kenny Gioia YT videos for Reaper are quite helpful and well-done.
The only problem. With those videos. Is that. After watching them. I start talking. In three-word sentences.

I remember being in a studio with an accomplished producer with significant commercial success. I watched him slamming compressors and EQs during tracking. As a complete novice at the time, I asked why he worked like that, since I always heard to preserve headroom / don’t over compress etc. He laughed and said to stop watching those YouTube tutorials! He said most of those YouTube guys know nothing and pretend to be experts. Then he told me to only take advice from people who are successful in the industry.

Yeah, but what’s really fun is to sit down with your favorite alcoholic beverage and watch some you tube or tick-tok videos on something like electrical wiring, you know something that can kill you. It leaves you wondering how these guys are still alive! Haha so true! Hopefully I'd pass 🤣 Yikes, there’s just some things I’ll always reach for a phone and call a qualified professional. Perhaps because we have 240v 13A going down our lines and it’s literally lethal! You’re much braver than me. Plus if something goes wrong and there’s a fire then it invalidates your insurance unless you have your handy worked signed off by a qualified electrician. Yep, electric and gas = pay for a professional. Deciding on my next compressor …. I’m safe watching your YouTube channel

I tend to go to YouTube for simple functional things that I don't remember how to do, or when I first got PT shit I couldn't easily figure out. Stuff like how to make all the drum tracks have the same AUX send for parallels and such.
And a bunch of nonaudio stuff like swapping out a car antenna.

YouTube is a godsend for things like "where the #$@ did my master bus channel disappear to and where do I find it" or "10 mouse shortcuts you didn't know were included with Logic!" I also enjoy gear shootouts if they're done well (like seawell) even though the YouTube file format kind of makes it less valuable. But it's terrible for "why your vocals don't sound pro" or "these EQ settings are used by all the best mixers" or whatever. So like the rest of the internet, use the good and toss the bad.

I only ever pay attention to educational material if your shit sounds good. On YouTube, that’s Eric Valentine, Dave Pensado, Jordan Valeriote, Ian Kirkpatrick, Joey Sturgis, Ken Lewis, Andrew Wade, and a few others. And, of course, seawell and crillemannen. Paid stuff like MWTM, URM/Nail The Mix, PureMix, etc. is generally very good. On a related note, I’m a huge fan of TikTok, but the music production stuff I’ve come across there is pretty abysmal. Worse than YouTube by a landslide. But maybe that means there’s a business opportunity there for anyone who’s actually competent.

I think there's way too much emphasis on mixing and not enough on tracking. Getting great sounding tracks is about 80% or more, of the process. If the tracks sound bad, the mix will sound bad. End of story.

YouTube is tame compared to Instagram. There are so many folks that just started using a DAW during COVID lockdown, never worked on music other than their own, and are giving out "mix advice" everyday. So many out of context "How to EQ an xxxxx" ....

End of story. I have learned this since being here for sure. You guys taught or rather insisted to me that almost anything I thought could be “fixed in the mix” actually needed to be fixed at tracking. You can’t polish a turd.

Vincent Ricciardi's too. Along with some others too. Chris

That guy Andrew from Podcastage is a little bit of a genius, because all his mic reviews follow the same script. It makes it easier to compare mics. Even if I don’t always agree with his opinions, the standardized review format is really smart.
There’s a British guy Anton Browne who does mic reviews that are just….well, I can’t even explain. He is my favorite YouTube personality…he is just a lovely person. He has a unique quirky style: very slow, long pauses, a lot of weird intuitive testing techniques (and it isn’t always clear what he’s listening for). Lots of long meaningful gazes into the camera. You’re watching Anton test out the mic and form an opinion, and sometimes that takes a while. I don’t know if they’re good mic reviews, but they might be great works of art.

I looked this up because your description sounded so appealing and it turns out I've totally seen that guy! And yes, you nailed it. I have no idea what he's thinking ever and he never explains it. Just kind "hmm... ahh yes... interesting... let's go back and... there it is... ok... yes that's nice.. but what's this?... ok I see." It's like he doesn't know YouTube is meant for other people to watch.

Great example. He's got a great voice, he's fun to listen to. No idea if I've learned anything about these mics though.

I've certainly learned a few things from Youtube, etc and it can be great for figuring out something you want to do in your DAW that you just can't figure out.
I often like non-specific stuff like what UBK does. I don't have to agree with it or find it immediately useful, but discussions that make me to think about a process differently generally leads me to discover ways to improve my workflow more than how to set up the latest clever de-essing trick or whatever.

I've found Michael White's videos pretty eye opening and quite different to any other YT vids out there. Videos that help you to learn how to think for yourself about mixing are probably the most helpful. Unless it's some kind of root canal situation, much of the work seems intuitive to me. It's just the thought process and making sure the "why" is always present.
The more I learn after 15 or so years of this is that the more I learn, the more I realize I don't know. Same with my jazz guitar journey. But you can't admit any of that. It feels like you have to know it all if you want to have confidence from your clients. Yet every project is a different adventure. Rambling now...
