Still using the Ruletec and Noiseash neve plugs everyday. Prefer them to UAD, waves etc. The ruletec sounds more like my SS pultec than any other plug I’ve heard.

This sale is insane- I already owned most of the Fuse stuff but just picked up the Drumsssx, Flywheel and TCS68 plugs.
Blown away.
I already owned a ton of tape sim plugs (uad Kramer, atr102, j37, slate, softube)and thought I would never need another. Got flywheel just because of the price - wow this thing is special. Based on the small amount of time I had to play with it it might be my new go-to. In conjunction with the TCS68 it’s so easy to dial in the right amount of gooey goodness.

I use Dropbox everyday. I think it is the smoothest service for file sharing. Most (like wetransfer) are perfectly fine too.
But …
I can’t stand google drive! I don’t get why it has to be a frustrating experience every time.

Hey Bunch, where did ya get your 7800? Who knows, that might be my old one. From a landlord in a band practice facility in Oakland CA

Let's see I can't think of the name of the company right now. But years ago, when I had a Brenell Mini 8, and an Otari 7800 (both 1 inch 8 track machines) I needed a auto locator. It was an aftermarket company that sold this auto locater product. Basically it was a arm that attached to the top of the tape deck that had a sensor in it. It had some sort of industrial adhesive, and you set it up so that it looked over the edge of the left (supply)reel of tape. This would capture the movement of the reels. Now they also included these little black round sticky dots, that you would attach to the flange of the reel. Every time they passed the sensor they would read out. giving you a sense of where the tape was, in minutes and seconds. Funny enough it was a God send, way back when. If I can remember the name I'll let you all know. And who knows, I might still have it in a box somewhere? haha I have one on top of my 7800!!!!! Not hooked up at the moment. I always thought it was a custom homemade one! Please let me know if you remember the name.

I'm sure the other machines sound better but my Otari's never break and the autolocator is 100% reliable. In the end what I hear is the unmistakable sound of countless particles of iron flying past the heads... It sounds like tape and it is glorious. I personally don't think digital audio will ever be able to match it...the sound I am getting is so much better for my ear than everything I have done digitally. Yeah, no disagreement from me. I’ve been happily doing records on the 388 for years now and while that is subpar in many ways (1/4”, 7.5ips, buncha ICs), it blows the doors off anything I ever did with a computer and the records sound fantastic. Of course I attribute much of that to the tape workflow even more than the sonics. Even though I’ve learned to work that 388 into a barely noticeable noise floor, I’m itching to move to 1” Just for what it’s worth - I mostly use the 1/2” 8 track 5050 instead of the 1” 7800. Reason 1 - tape cost/budgets. Reason 2 - reliability and auto locate. The noise floor isn’t noticeably different between our 2 machines.

All right, below is a pic of what I did. Missing from the 500 box is the Serpent 4001b that arrives today. Lots of what here was stuff I hadn't considered when I was doing my upgrades until I got suggestions here. Thanks for the help! First, JMoose already had me convinced on the patchbay before all your replies. And you're all right for all kinds of different reasons. Patchbay went on top where it belongs. Second, my logic on cooling. Hope I'm right but if I'm not I can always move it around. I put the OptoComp underneath the Patchbay so the heat would have extra room to dissipate up. The 4-710 goes underneath that for two reasons. Even though it runs warm, it won't be on when I'm using the OptoComp for mixing. Secondly, the OptoComp is very well ventilated top and bottom so my hope is that when it's off, the 4-710's heat can go right up through it. Also, the 4-710 is warm, not hot. Should be ok. PRO VLA below that which is my last choice compressor so will only get really used in bigger sessions. It will also be used during mixing but, again, the 4-710 won't. And then everything under that runs cool. View AttachmentYou didn't follow the golden rule!!! (Always buy 2x the amount of rack space that you think you need!)

My 70s Otari 7800 has a super unreliable tape counter that you can "guestimate" where you're at with.

This might sound insane to some people, but skip the 500 series gear and put the full 3K into the microphone, maybe some change for a headphone amp. Put the hardware on the back burner for now, just enjoy waiting even longer for it. I used to have a lightly modded Peluso 2247 SE that was good. But in the next range up there's things like Heiserman 47, Pearlman is in the Peluso price range too, maybe not as bright as the Peluso. Some people don't take to the bright. There's also the Flea 47 NEXT which is a cardioid microphone, that I'd be tempted by based on sound clips. I'm not as experienced as some of the other people on here with top shelf mics, but I think that low end girth and upper mid shnizzle of a 47 would probably suit your voice, too. The Pearlman microphones are wayyyyyyy in another league compared to Peluso. My TM47 w/ ef12 often beat out the 70s Neumann 87 that used to be at the studio I worked out of. Excellent customer service by Dave Pearlman too. Super bargain price for an excellent hand built cardioid only u47 clone. I do think an amazing microphone is worth investing in. In my opinion if you’re going to have one top shelf LDC I would want the option to switch patterns. I’ve never tried the Soyuz but if I was shopping it would be on my list.

I love our Yamaha m460 with the panels off. Sounds so much more open and huge than you’d expect from an smallish upright.

Grand Finale is my favorite I've tried from them so far - but just on a laptop with cans. I'm not sure how it would translate on a real system. It's almost too easy. Would be great for a super quick 5 minute faux-master.

Wow just demo'd a bunch. Thankfully I wont be getting the full bundle. But damn - Stark is insane. And I wasn't expecting to like Luxe but it is really cool. Scared to try the noise reduction because it seems like a must buy.

I forgot my main trick for 50s gear driven into distortion lofi is a Berlant Concertone. 50s tube pre from mono tape machine. You can find em on the bay for about 100-300. They need a lil modding but drive into distortion beautifully. You can see one in Sean Everett’s rack in his mix with the masters vid (I haven’t watched just noticed it from the trailer) and I swear I can hear that distortion on some of his productions (war on drugs, Alabama shakes)

Damn I must have gotten lucky - no RF issues at all in the pair I built. I didn’t know that was a problem people were having.

Certainly not cheap and I wouldn’t call it lofi but I love an rca 77dx when I’m looking for “vintage” character. Cheap and “lofi” I would echo others suggesting 635a. Or a 421 with a little distance from the source. Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah the studio I work at has an RCA 77 and 44. Both wonderful mics! Though yeah not cheap! I actually have some Beyer M260s with RCA ribbons and it gets me close! Very cool sounding mics and relatively cheap. Yep, I already have the 635a and I love it!! I'll have to try the 421 with a little distance, I only use it on the occasional heavy guitar. It usually sits in the mic closet. I can imagine how that bite the 421 has could work to give an agressive edge to the sound. Man do I miss my 260. Stolen out of a band mates car who borrowed it a few years ago while he was at a bar.

I have a sinking suspicion I fried an input transformer and a germanium amp in a Chandler unit (and routed to my patchbay) by having phantom engaged and their being a short in my mic line cable...which is in the wall. I found the break in the line. Had barely just enough slack in it to pull, cut and repair it. With shipping, parts, and labor about a $260 repair. I am now super-phantom conscious. 😕 I wouldn’t think phantom would fry a transformer?

It's good. I don't really use it too much because I get color going through outboard gear, but sounds nice. I heard a comparison between this and something like the Luna Neve extension and works very similar to my ears. Good alternative. Lindell 80 series has a bus plugin for this as well. I prefer the Lindell 80 bus plugin for adding thickness. The Britson does more of that console summing emulation thing with crosstalk and distortion, which can be cool but not an every mix thing for sure.

I use it on every mix. Super awesome filters. Great for gain staging if a track wasn’t recorded at the right level. Driving it can be cool too - make sure to select “filters before fader” when using the output compensation. I don’t really use the bus plugin/grouping any more. Sometimes it’s cool for the crosstalk thing. I thought it sounded pretty similar to slate console thing when I was comparing them years ago.
