hey wkg, I saw this "I am such a sucker for nice verbs... " and even though I posted in deal of the day thread, I'm posting it here, because maybe you'll be sure to see it. I have never bought a Waves plugin. I'm thinking about getting this one, though. www.waves.com/plugins/ir1-convolution-reverb

I read recently of a temporary way to make HDDs work. Put them in the freezer for awhile. I tried that. The primary drive only makes clicking sounds. I've found and purchased a working identical model of HDD and will try swapping the controller board first, maybe it'll work long enough to get files off of it. I'm no whiz at any of this. That said, and roger what you said, my forte is troubleshooting and repairing. Only saying for the heck of it: Mindful though I've never done the freezer technique.......... Google it. Maybe you could try leaving the drives in the freezer for a longer time? Just brainstorming, eh?

hey smallbutfine, super grateful for you to take the time to reply to me, eh? ok, I do not understand the Monitor controller concept. how or why is it necessary? whats the difference, if were to just pull down (or raise) the fader in my DAW (Reaper), on the Master track?
there's something I'm missing understanding here.

that is so awesome, man. very happy for you, eh?
I am finding the coolest most beautiful songs everywhere I go. I am almost on fire with enthusiasm, and love of beautiful music.
buying albums and songs. 2 Rumer albums. have listened to her cover of Rundgren's Be Nice to Me, and am playing it myself. just bought Emilie-Claire Barlow's Live in Tokyo. must buy Sara Bareilles's new album. bought Gregory Porter's Be Good. there's just so much awesome phenomenal beautiful music, old, new, everything in between.
have not checked out Blackstar. am glad I love Heroes now. the influence that Ziggy Stardust (and Don't Fear the Reaper), had/have on me are immeasurably big.
make music. love music.

That would be a proper :-) way to connect your gear, and you would clock the babyface slaved to the svart ADC. But i would go from the svart DA directly to the K&Hs, which i assume are active monitors or use a passive monitor controller maybe, so you get maximum fidelity. thank you so much for your reply. and yes my K&Hs are active. they're the smaller, maybe O110. like 5" speakers. I am curious about the DA side now for my K&H monitors. I have been going: s/pdif OUT from the Babyface > Schiit Audio DA > Schiit Audio headphone amp. the headphone amp is really great for my headphones while monitoring myself recording. the Babyface's headphone amp is just not loud enough for me. but as for hooking up the K&H monitors, the Schiit Audio DA only has one output. so I run it to the headphone amp, which has an additional output: so, 1 headphone output, and then rca jacks left and right, which I run to the K&Hs. the only other alternative I have right now would be to go straight from the Babyface to the K&H's. do you think its possible, that doing it that way is equally good?

I saw him on tv playing with MacCartney and his regular guitar accompanists. as someone who just recently took up drumming, Abe definitely impressed me. drumming is so fun, man. regarding Bass, I bought one a few years ago. I should pick it up and take it for a spin.
midway between it and my acoustic guitar (to which I am simply addicted), is my Tacoma Thunderhawk Baritone acoustic guitar. I played it a lot years ago, when i first bought it. it was often a good choice, when I was trying to fit songs to my vocal range, which I would say was quite limited. having sung for a couple thousand hours over the past few years, I can say with confidence, in my most humble opinion, I've actually gotten better. a lot of it has come from listening to super fantastic songs by super fantastic singers, who I then try my best to emulate. there are just so many great songs, and so many great singers.

I like how Bruno's Bass player dances and plays at the same time:
this one is great too. the volume is way low though. suggest listening through earbuds. the whole performance, everything about it........magic, eh? :

I just bought a guitar from salvation army thrift store. A nice cheap epiphone. Nice low action. Plays nice. Sounds nice. Cost $39.99 + tax. Thats the kind of guitar that you do that to. If you really need to. Just sayin. I'd rather play it.

thank you very much svart.
this is good to hear. when my friend was helping me with mic pre, my DAW was clipping, even though we were not using enough mic pre gain get into the to the sweet spot of the mic pre's capability. my friend said that the reason was because of the low maximum input level of my Babyface.
ok, now I want to know this: how will I hook up my svartbox? is this how I would do it?: my laptop has USB jacks. my Babyface has s/pdif input and output. I would continue using the Babyface for my interface. but I would use the svartbox hooked up to the Babyface. the converters in the svartbox will bypass the converters in the Babyface. and I will be hooking up the svartbox DA to my Schiit Audio headphone amp, and to my K & H monitors. am I right?

thank you svart. very good, man. here's my setup. I record myself singing, accompanying myself on acoustic guitar. 1 mic. thats it. so I really only need 1 channel right now. I record using good outboard mic pre's and compressors, into my RME Babyface. that is connected via USB into my 2 year old HP laptop that has an i7, 16 GB RAM, and Windows 8.1 I monitor myself while recording, by s/pdif out of the Babyface, into Schiit Audio gear: Bifrost uber DA into a Lyr 2 headphone amp (and then Focal headphones). I use that gear for my K & H monitors too. I know a guy who knows alot about this stuff. he told me that the Babyface is not the best. its prosumer grade, not professional grade. the problem is how low the maximum input level is. as posted already: Maximum Input Level for 0 dBFS: +12 dBu could you please tell me your thoughts about: - would a svartbox be worth it for me to get? will it make my recordings better? if yes, is it because I will be able to use more of the gain from my mic pre's and compressors? - how would the svartbox compare to the DA gear that I already have? do I already have a good DA portion of the equation? here's a link to Schiit Audio. the last I knew, their website is absolutely hilarious. schiit.com/thank you for any thoughts, man.

it is pure genius. I couldn't agree more. its the simplicity. or something like that . the raw unrefined, and then in the flash of an eye, it changes. to a deep inner mysterious complexity. thats almost like a whisper on the wind. and then, its gone. you're in a whole new world. things are somehow strangely super familiar. and then nothing happens. and then a few minutes later, nothing continues to happen (with a nod to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy). its a Zen moment, by any stretch of the imagination. a stillness. yet, robust and cantankerous energy is only a vague riddle away. to the land beyond hope and fear. a place where only the brave choose to tread. things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm. and things of that nature.

I just wanted to chime in and say that for me, right now, I can unequivocally and on the record, that this is by far the most I have ever enjoyed a thread that can be deleted. I've taken to anxiously and eagerly looking forward to what new posts will be made. it seems there is a never ending plethora, indeed a veritable gold mine if not cornucopia of cool witticisms, clever faux pax's, absurd non-sequiturs, to say nothing of the occasional bon mots, bromides, iodides, and all around cheery good natured, folderol, and other things to occupy my neuronal activity. I think that perhaps this thread could stand as a sort of kinda in a way, metaphor, for all thats right in the recording and musician and record making world today.

just want to mention about his son Abe jr. he plays drums for MacCartney. I recently bought a vst for Vdrum kit. the guy who was helping me configure it, told me how they used to tease Abe jr, (in a totally friendly good natured way), about playing on a Hanson records a while back. wow, just checked the wiki on him. he's played with so many phenomenal artists. just freakin amazing, man.

I am only writing this, because I like the juxtaposition of dollar figure, as you shall see forthwith. comparing 15k to:
I just got back from taking Mom to Salvation Army thrift store. I am now the proud owner of 1 slightly used fine epiphone acoustic guitar. it cost $39.99 + tax. at the store, I tuned her up a bit, and played it. sang. serenaded workers at the store. it played nice. sounded just fine. the first 2 guitars I had were epiphones. kinda coming full circle. nice beater. maybe give it away sometime to someone who wants to learn how to play. thrilled. hah.

"This is compounded by the headphone amp on the Apollo being somewhat weak, it just doesn't give me enough volume to feel right when tracking vocals, while keeping my recoding levels lower than I used to keep them."
with regards to that, (and mindful that I am recording myself singing accompanying myself on acoustic guitar, and I am just doing live takes, so not overdubbing), I use an RME Babyface. long story short, I bought a headphone amp. and a DA. so now I s/pdif out from the Babyface, into the DA, into the headphone amp. the difference is night and day. my experience (and this is MY experience only.....other people my have completely excellent experiences): is that the headphone amp on the Babyface did not have juice. the stuff I got are both from Schiit Audio. a Lyr 2 and a Bifrost uber. I also rolled the tubes in the Lyr 2. anyway, extremely well spent money.

hahahahha. yes, and in the spirit of a wish sandwich, ala en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber_Biscuitwe could call it a wish microphone box. in which you had a microphone box, and you wished that it had a: "RARE VINTAGE NEUMANN U47 STUDIO MICROPHONE" in it.
