There is a few cool articles online (I believe wired and pcmag) on diy'ing a multitouch screen using led's, a projector and a ps3 camera with the infrared lens removed. All for under $400. You could make your own and it doesn't have to be regulated to any size. I debated building a coffee table sized screen with a wood trim wide enough for... well coffee cups. I dumpster dove a 48 inch flat screen that im planning to use.

Dan's a good dude. The GSSL front panel I received not so long ago was top notch.

Yeah it is. Damn that sucks. Like I so want to support and help the little guy like Ross cause well hell, he could be any of my friends, or me, or you guys, having built a good product and trying to meet a demand and then just getting lost, and not able to keep up and for every step forwards theres two back and... Well you know. And then I read this and I just want to... shake my head. Damn. Ross; if you get to read this, we're rooting for you buddy but dude you gotta step it up.

Yeah it sounds cool. Especially since your tackling a tube preamp at the get go. I've only done a few p2p pieces but I liked doing it so can certainly understand. I never even considered 500 series. Is there any p2p 500 series stuff out there? For that matter theirs probably only a handful of tube based 500 gear on the market. Silent arts 'GIX' comes to mind. Rolls music tube preamp is another. IGS One LA Im sure there's others but not many. Good luck. Dylan

Those 560s are damn affordable. I've had my 160xt's for so long though I dont know if I'll ever sell them.

Personally, I would like to see a real Mastering Console type thing, like the dangerous master, but for a low price. L/R input volume, a few insert points with in/out switches, mid side matrix, stereo spread, output level control, and some nice meters. Make that mofo look like battleship controls though. Yep. Although id like it to be desktop or rackmountable. And personally id like at least 4 additional io for interfacing outboard. You know like a summerizer/mastering ctlr that could be and/or both. With Carnhill outputs please.

Oh rnc's are... well really nice! I had two for years that I used in my live recording rig that really saved my ass. I guess I consider them 'natural sounding' compressors.

Another 3630 hater. Just an awful... device (for lack of a better term). Seeing those in the rig at clubs is always a disappointment. Although I did find it useful eventually; For a few years I used a 3630 to build studio racks with. Cause I didn't care if I put my circular saw through it. The dbx 160 is a great compressor for drums though. I felt the original 166 (and its inbred brethren the xl, xls,) to have artifacts and unnatural sounding. Yes building the gear mentioned is vastly superior to the low end stuff like the mdx and 166. As a matter of fact I sold my professionally made gear in favor of the stuff I diy'ed using the forums at groupdiy.

Cheers John. Oh so damn busy. Studio, music, life, family... well you all know. I still come by and read a thread or two quite often though. Ucapps used to be an interesting site for midi-related controllers. It looks dated nowadays though. I betcha theres a yahoo or Google group thats devoted to arduino daw controllers out there.

Excellent description svart.
Im interested in how the midi controller turns out as ive wanted to do the same and arduino is a great platform for fools like myself so definitely keep posting. Theres some stuff online but most of what ive seen is rather lacking or just plain ugly.

Alright I got another question. I'm building dual channel tube mic pre. It needs obviously multiple voltages; 250 x 2, 6.3v x 2, and 48v . I have my two psus; one formy hv and heaters and one for phantom and I plan on using two toroidals. Anything I need to keep in mind? I think im gonna keep the xfmrs in a external case and run a 6 prong xlr to the preamp. Thanks in advance Dylan

Okay so please forgive me if I missed it but I haven't seen it really answered anywhere in this thread and have been following it for a little while, and I'm in the market for higher quality adda and so: Will you be making this available to purchase anytime in the near future? If so do you plan on releasing this as custom one-offs or do you have plans to have them assembled somewhere? And finally do you have an idea (around) how much? It looks good Svart.

Alright, considering nobody jumped in to say "don't do that you..." I'm gonna throw the lid on and see how it goes during a session tomorrow that I expect to last 1-2 hours. I imagine that should give me a good enough idea if it's gonna do any damage. Thanks a lot guys for chiming in. Btw: the eq is a dual channel helios 69 but as I already mentioned with a tube gain stage. It's. .. awesome.

Is it possible to vent the rubber? As in, could you cut small slots in it to allow air to flow around it? I believe its probably to thin for that. I guess ill mention I cut a circle out of metal using a hole saw that was small enough to be placed inside the hole of the toroidal without the circle falling through. This gives me the option of screwing the toroidal in place if i choose. I can then screw the rubber piece that comes with toroidals and use the metal circle as my anchor. I'm using a par-metal case which has sides that are completely ventilated.

So I purchased an antek 05t240 (which is a 50va toroidal with 240v x 2 @250ma and 6.3v x 2 @3a filaments) for a dual channel tube eq I had built in a 1u size case. I'm using two of 6.3v lines for heaters for two tubes and the 250v for my ht. The eq is finished, does wonders and everything fits just perfectly. Everything but the toroidal which is a couple of hairs (or just 2 mm to tall). My question is If i install rubber around it and use a rubber pad on top (using plastic ties to mount it) would it cause over heating or damage the toroidal? I know when mounting a toroidal never to let the screw touch the top of the case as it would form a winding and could cause serious damage. I've seen some toroidals stuffed with tons of other components in a tight space but im just not sure if both sides of the toroidal were touching the cases. I'm a member of a few forums but I thought others might find information regarding toroidal transformers useful here. Ive got an alright bit of Diy builds under my belt and probably have 6 tube pieces but I just can't find information online regarding this specifically and what exactly I can get away with. Worse comes to worse I'll build an external psu but as of right now I have no noise in the unit and everything is operating perfectly. I just haven't put a lid on it. Thanks in advance guys.

Porkyman, Pardon me for assuming it was your first build. Build away Im sure its awesome. I never build kits anymore as its more fun figuring it out through research. i had thought i had discharged the srrp caps once. My hands literally threw the board involuntarily to the ground as a healthy bit voltage got shot through me. Wozers.

No im sure there is no issues. People had put two g-pultecs in one case against Gustav and Jakobs warnings and some had noise. If this is you first diy piece; dont do it. Jeff at Capi is the best way to get started. Or like many others a gssl. You'll just end really frustrated and very possibly hurt. Ive zapped myself doing a pultec. Not fun.

Gustsv put that together cause many of us wanted stereo (or dual channel) pultecs but were experiencing noise issues. $680 is probably a low figure albeit not by much. One can use edcors to shave off a buck but like you said a lot of the sound is in the transformers. Ive built g pultecs with both lundahl and edcor xfmrs (lundahls were better sounding imho) and also don audio and carnhill inductors and i think they are just great. Im sure the Warm will be awesome. Both the wa76 and the wa12 sure as hell are. But lets not totally fool ourselves, neither the Warm or Gyraf are actual pultecs.

I really wish there was a more affordable option other than fpe. I have three builds right now that I will eventually send off; like the design is done, matched, finalized and I even made a temporary frontpanel using transfers with until then. Needless to say I don't love the front panels and think they deserve a much better (more attractive) face. I also have three more to do (Neumann w492, another 1176, and a 1292,) that make me cringe when I think about all the frustrations that come with front panel drilling and layouts. And at anywhere from $70-$110 a pop that's pretty expensive. I've been trying to contact trophy shops recently in hopes of finding a better alternative. If I find one ill definitely spread the word. Incredibly interesting build diary BTW.
