Musikraft might give you more options/ideas. I like their stuff, but it has been quite a while and did have one that needed some fret work.

So, question. If I am playing guitar, bass, whatever, if something is a couple cents out, I can hear it. If I try to sing, I can’t carry a tune in abucket. Abysmal. That doesn’t make sense to me that I can hear instruments marginally out, but I can’t hear it when I sing. Maddening. I would love to be a decent singer.

What is the degree of difficulty making this change? Cheers, Geoff On par with swapping a tube. Like the physical swapping of a tube. Nothing more. Ooh. Even I could do that. Cheers, Geoff

I actually like the KT clone with the mod better than the original LA-2A. Sounds cleaner and more modern. I also liked C here better It's been mentioned a bunch here, but - the KT-2A with the Kenetek Optocell is excellent. Game changer. Kenetek makes one specifically 'tuned' to the KT-2A, if you request it. What is the degree of difficulty making this change? Cheers, Geoff

Nice to see Loreena mentioned. My buddy Pete and his wife and a couple of their friends often serve as her backing band.
As for metal, the new Kings X brings the heavy. Dug is what, 72 or something and still kicks ass.
Onto the subject of the thread. My kid, who is 18, often chides me for listening to boomer guitar bands. He couldn’t have less interest. Music just never clicked for him, although he heard plenty of it growing up. He is on the spectrum, so when something clicks it usually has staying power. Music just never did. Otoh another friend has a kid on the spectrum who is the same age and is studying trumpet at university. He obviously got the bug in a big way. Although he doesn’t listen to much of the same music his dad did and does.

Ok the mastering the mix says you don’t need to dither from 32 bit floating point since its effectively 24 bit leaving the Daw.
I suspect I will have to experiment with and without dither and draw my own conclusions.

Open it in your Daw. On the lower right there should be a thing you click, the key, and it will ask you to authorize.
Remember it will be with your PA plugs, not LtL.
Hope this helps.

Nice! I have been eyeing the V2 for a while - the only thing that held me back (when compared to the Buzz Audio Zodiak and GR EQ2NV) was lack of high-pass filter, which is probably the main "EQ" I use when tracking. It's still super enticing without that though and still on my list. (API2500 has the same "limitation" btw, as far as I recall). Hope it meets your goals perfectly. -Chris My Daking pre has a hpf, so I’m covered there. But the V2 does have a switch that cuts the highs and lows. I think 3db down at 16 khz and 60hz. Well, when I started this thread I wasnt really thinking I was going to take the plunge immediately. I have a tax bill on the 15th, and the last six months have not been kind to my wallet, I need new glasses, etc.
But, you also only live once, so I said screw it. V2 incoming.
I think the Syteks are going to have to go to make room if nothing else.

Yeah I guess my confusion lies in the contention that you should always dither when going out of your Daw. But does that hold true if you are not altering the bit, ahem, depth? Thanks for the correction Benny!
Would appreciate someone setting me straight on this.

Ok, these probably aren’t inherent to Logic, but anyways. I have left the bit rate at 24 rather than 32 bit floating point. My understanding is it doesn’t really matter, as long as you aren’t clipping the stereo outs. But is that correct? And dithering before sending out to hardware. I know we had a lengthy thread about dither a couple or three months back, but it obviously didn’t sink in for me. Am I correct that the dither goes right after the i/o plug? Does it matter if I engage delay compensation before or after inserting the dither plug? And then how to set the dither plug. I am using good dither. dan? Cheers, Geoff

Ok. The Avalon 2055 has been mentioned a few times. As I have and like the eq on the 737, just wondering if they are similar at all. And if you don’t tell anyone I will also admit to being ok with the pre on the 737. Its maybe a bit soft or something. And I even came to terms with the comp when I realized its never gonna be an 1176. Instead of trying to run it at its fastest settings, go the other way. No, it isn’t always gonna work but I dont think it’s the piece of junk its made out to be. But I’m also not getting another just to have a stereo pair. Cheers, Geoff You can tell they come from the same manufacturer, but the 737 is a lightweight. The 2055 is fancier, richer, spendier, more flexible if it needs to be. It's the true high end of the Avalon line. And apparently discontinued. There is one for sale in town for almost 5 large Canuck bucks. Definitely more than I want to spend at the moment. Cheers, Geoff

yet for all this thread, gearslutz chatter, and rme forum, having artifacts / severe reflections on the vocal like Billie Eilish recording will just get you fired from a lot of gigs. Or they will have a revision on you. Or they just won’t pay you on the back end and send it to someone else or go with the rough because this is the real world. The pumping and breathing in the voices from poorly set or chosen compressors will get you a revision or fired. The artifacts from the cheap condensers being audible in the final mix could get you fired. The audible reflections could get you fired. Not everyone can be a nepo baby, beat maker who strikes it gold sampling a more talented artist, or a no nothing “producer” moving faders because he can play guitar and hung out with someone 20 years ago. This stuff is horrible. It’s truly horrible. And for all we can hate on Finneas, Billie Eilish, the last 20 yes’s of rap, horrible metal, and lil xan’s flaming hot Cheeto ulcer, a lot of that self produced but schizophrenic quality stuff still sounds like it was once a human voice which is somewhat striking when you compare it to pop music where half the vocals could be ai synthesized and tuned, effected, and stuck in front of a plastic surgery recut modern day milli vanilli or hologram. Even so it is nothing to be praised. It is a triumph of ugly egalitarianism, consumerism, and ultimately, conformity to subgenres that tolerate it for just being conformist. The labels are right they can sell anything. The music industry starting with the rise of pretty much talentless nepo baby indie artists back when it still had money became like the art industry. It’s often an industry for rich people who don’t have to work to masturbate to the lack of talent of other rich people because then don’t believe in technical skill anymore, unlike even early modern art. All they have to do is conform ultimately. The art industry now believes in egotistical self reflection, money laundering, plagiarism is all but the very legal definition, making up new definitions of what a sale is, when you made the art, lying if you made the art, etc. and sales are often are just a lie as any of number of complex securities and the so called financial products that dominate the economy of many areas because we no longer make anything and it must be made as cheap as possible to pocket the rest and pay off politicians. High Price by Isabelle Graw is a good book on the art market and this now seems to be true in the music industry even at the smaller independent label level where they only sign people who conform, do it as cheap as possible, make up shit beyond the music or recording as it is itself to sell it became they sure cannot sell it as absolute art anymore unlike all the older songs where the lyrics and aesthetics were often after thoughts and the people playing it weren’t lookers and not even been able to fit into a subcultural group. Now take the art industry and have it all priced at a cartel rate because some artists are not more talented than others says the US congress. The chimp’s finger painting is worth just as much money as the sculptor or the stunt artist getting people to pay to take selfies with the banana on the wall and seeing if they’ll eat it or not. Say we have an artist. Let’s call him Duffman. He makes beer. Moe sells his beer at Moe’s Tavern but doesn’t even pay Duffman in advance what it costs to make anymore. The customers, Barney, Carl, Homer, and Larry used to pay Moe and Moe paid Duffman per keg minus the amount Moe loaned him to brew the beer. Now they pay Moe’s landlord, real estate company partially owned by Fat Tony, and Fat Tony only pays out at Mayor Quimby’s cartel rate per keg that’s less than what it costs to produce because Fat Tony has “lobbied” Mayor Quimby and Fat Tony only pays out based on whatever his accountants can determine is his “net revenue.” Now away from this are hidden minimums paid to Krusty Burger for Fat Tony’s Restaurant Group’s right to collect payments and deliver product for Krusty, who’s also invested with Fat Tony in his real estate company. Krusty is the business using Fat Tony like a tax farmer because then he has an excuse to cut his pay roll and he owns part of it too because his old franchisees and suppliers who never signed up for this scheme. On top of this Fat Tony is throwing Luigi’s wine right in the face of Homer and co and he’s employing Snake and Cletus to make bathtub gin and moonshine that Fat Tony can’t sell but it eats away at his net revenue that he has to pay a portion back of. Moe might not even have to pay Duffman anything if Fat Tony’s lawyers can get him out of it. Instead he just gives Duffman warm kegs of beer back to sell for him to pay rent as he drives a van around promoting the beer he made that Moe sells. And this is all legal because Mayor Quimby is involved and is allowed to buy shares of both Fat Tony’s real estate company and Krusty Burger. Duffman cannot even afford to eat at Krusty Burger. This is the music industry in America. Thank you for such a succinct and direct recommendation on an affordable interface used for some simple at home tracking! Twas a fun read though. RIP Larry. Cheers, Geoff

Ok, I suppose I was mostly, maybe exclusively, using the DP4 as a reverb and delay box. Maybe not its strong suit.
Anyways, if nothing else this thread will have me dusting it out and seeing if it still works.

I finally got around to checking out the High Voltage one. Definitely sounded good in their Youtube clip. But maybe louder than when in bypass. Anyhow the price is right but with such limited frequency options, not sure I would want it as my only stereo eq.
The Api is intriguing, as is the Iron Age.. No votes for the Great River NV?

They should be required to do a session limited to 8 tracks. Or better yet live to two tracks. No overdubs. Cheers, Geoff We have a live-to-2 assignment for exactly this reason! Time to break out the Decca tree. Actually I dunno what I am talking about. Never done it. But could be fun. And educational. Yes. I ve had beverages. Cheers, Geoff

All those knobs on a parametric scare the crap out of many. Those who grew up on plugins are accustomed to the graphical feedback of the combination they have dialed in. Plus you have to remember the GML has this reputation for “clean”, they think digital “clean “ is the same as GML “ clean”, we know it’s not. Commitment is what scares them. They want the security of opening a session two hours later and being able to change their settings. 😕 They should be required to do a session limited to 8 tracks. Or better yet live to two tracks. No overdubs. Cheers, Geoff

I kinda like the Tsar 1. But speaking of gritty and shitty I still have my Ensoniq DP4 from what, 1993? Gathering dust. Hasn’t been hooked up in at least a decade. I’m sure the caps are all dried out. I don’t know what to do with it. I hate just throwing stuff in the dumpster but assuming it still functions is it good for anything more than a doorstop? Cheers, Geoff You should sell it to a French House enthusiast. Is this a Daft Punk thing or something? Anyhow I really am wondering what to do with it Cheers, Geoff.

Yeah, these often end up as lists of what people own/use. But it’s still instructive, there’s a reason people own/use what they do. And I learned about a couple pieces that weren’t on my radar. And seeing stuff pop up multiple times also tells me something.
The only hw eqs in my quiver are the cheap dbx one, which is ok, and the much derided Avalon 737. Whose eq I actually like. It’s been out on loan for about a decade to a guy who actually uses it and writes much better songs than I do. Hello Alun! So both mono pieces. My Overstayer comp has limited, but useful stereo eq. I have a bazillion sw eqs, including the Silver Bullet, SieQ, Kush Electra, PSP Avedis, Trident, Helios, etc. So do I need a stereo hw eq? Probably not. Want? Debating.
So even if there is a tendency for these kind of queries to be lists of stuff people own, I still get some value out of that. In other words, keep em coming.
And, hoping the Shadow is doing ok. Haven’t seen him around these parts lately.
Cheers, Geoff
