Usually when I've had this request, they want something like NIN or something like crushed distorted drums but then they don't want them to lose their impact. It doesn't veer towards the example you posted, where they could be electronic drums. They want analog-dirty-crunchy with impact. But you never know! Asking for a reference track is a very good idea, I'll make sure to do that anytime something like this crops up

Apparently these were captured with a Stanton turntable with a direct USB output. So: cheap converters, wrong stylus and most likely a RIAA curve that needs to be reversed. Suggestions?

I have a daunting job ahead. I need to restore a couple dozen 78 RPM transfers. The transfers have already been done (they come from a library), so there is no way to optimize the analog capture. I need to deal strictly with declick, denoise, and EQ.
The discs were badly damaged, there's a lot more noise than signal. It doesn't help that they are field recordings of singers acappella, or backed with either a bagpipe or a distant piano.
I own the Sonnox suite, which is pretty good, but I think most people use Izotope RX. Any recommendations on that front? The advantage of the Sonnox denoiser is that it doesn't need to learn the noise pattern. RX does a LOT more but it looks like I would need RX 7 Advanced and that is over budget for this project. Anyway, I'm all ears on the software front, budget be damned!
My other question is if it would be better to EQ first for good sound and then declick and denoise, or the other way around? I'm pretty certain that removing clicks, pops and crackle goes before noise and hiss reduction, but not sure what's the right point of the process to EQ. Again, any suggestions are welcome!

Didn’t EQ or compress it, sorry! I don’t think it has a “unique” sound. I think it has a high quality sound that can be and is being used in well engineered records that are selling a good amount of copies. See Ryan Hewitt and The Lumineers, for instance.

I almost bought one instead of the U67 reissue. It’s more modern and brighter than a U67. Sounds great. I tested both mics head to head, plus some others.

I had to literally challenge Jules (rudely) to get my account deleted, after following all their stated procedures. They don't like deleting accounts, the number goes down it's bad for their business. My exact words were "delete my account if you have the balls". It worked... 😂

When I went to Funky Junk in London to demo mics (and buy the U67 reissue) I did a short demo of the ATC SCM25A, and compared them to my current monitors which they also had (APS Aeon). The ATC are "annoyingly good", as the sales staff very eloquently put it.

This is well done and worth watching!
Singer-songwriter recorded using U67, M149, U87, MK4, SM57. Even the humble 57 makes a great showing, althought it clearly stands out as a different beast.
I have listened at home through small hifi speakers, I need to listen at the studio, but I'd be happy to make a record with either, and the differences (SM57 excepted) are a LOT more subtle than I thought.
After watching this video, the next time I get a singer-songwriter I will try to do a one mic performance, before trying to mic the acoustic guitar separately. Of course you need a great performer that can balance himself.

Just to counterbalance, please avoid Stam. Until he gets his act together (if ever), sends all the overdue orders (some more than a year overdue) and has actual stock, I don’t think we should recommend it no matter how we like the actual gear that we might own.
The Weight Tank is stellar and most importantly, it exists. Never used it on drums but a dealer actually recommended it over the recreation of the Abbey Road compressor...

In my recent test of the Soyuz vs U67, the Soyuz stood out as a very good mic with a classic but modern sound and slightly hyped in the highs, which made the U67 darker and less exciting in comparison. Once I added the tiniest high shelf to the U67, the shootout was over instantly. The U67 surpassed the Soyuz in every aspect, I almost got tears in my eyes, and just had to bite the bullet and buy the Neumann.

I got a nice powered hub made by plugable.com/products/ with very modern chips and firmware and a hefty power supply. I suspected my old hub was causing some trouble, and I think I was right!

The Black Box HG-2 is fantastic, I didn't even mention it due to price. I can't think of working without it. You can find them used for just a bit more than the Silver Bullet. Very different kind of options with those two, but for lifting up your final mix it really is that final 2% kind of box. It has several options with it. I think if someone mixes mostly in the box, this one adds something special. It's useful for a final touch, and useful for mastering (not that I call myself a mastering engineer!), but to me is an essential component of the mix. It's on the buss from the very beginning.

As far as Martin's search, I'd also throw out looking into the Black Box HG-2 or the SPL Vitalizer MK2-T. Both are nice additions for hybrid systems for adding that 3D lift. The Black Box HG-2 is fantastic, I didn't even mention it due to price. I can't think of working without it.
