What does individual calibration even mean? They test the mic and create a calibration file for it that you load into their software.

I use system wide for stuff outside the daw, yes. I enable safe headroom there but not in the daw, since my mixes already have enough headroom. I also want them to not change levels when turning the plugin off for bouncing.

This is really interesting. I can switch this thing on and it's like..."Oh...there's the bass punch" The bass guitar, that is...which makes sense because it lives around 90-100Hz. My experience mirrors yours. More bass punch, and I can better hear reverbs. Mixes translate wonderfully. My room is professionally designed and treated but Sonarworks gives me the last 10-15%. There’s a particular commercial song I like that has some floor tom hits during the intro. They sound wimpy without Sonarworks and just perfect with it.

Does the software boost with eq for trying to fill up the nulls in the room? That's just silly. Have you used it?

You should demo the Fabfilter one. I can’t imagine getting better results by any means. It simply makes the problem go away instantly with no side effects.

I'm interested and I like Valhalla, though lately I've moved on to other reverbs. I also have a lot of delay options! Echoboy, AudioThing Outer Space, two hardware tape delays (Fulltone and Copicat), a Korg SDD-3000 pedal (which I still need to learn how to use) and LTL Pulse colour module. I wonder what this one brings to the table!

If I just didn't pay a hefty chunk to the IRS I would grab Pro-DS...plan to get it before the end of the sale though Pro-DS is fantastic!

I only have one plugin at v9 and a few at v10. I'm considering rebuying the old one at $29 just to upgrade it I'm interested in a few plugins but would like some opinions on them, preferably negative! PuigTec: I only have one Pultec style plugin, Logic's new one. I have hardware though: Retro 2A3 and A-Designs EM-PEQ. PuigChild: the only Fairchild style plugin I have is Slate's buss comp. No hardware here! Aphex Vintage Aural Exciter: I think it might come in handy? I own some hardware too. Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain: people seem to love it, not sure if I will use it though. CLA-2A: is it good enough? I had the Stam SA2A and I didn't love it. CLA-3A: same question! I have two Golden Age Comp-3A which are fantastic. Experiences welcome!

With the $29 sale on all Waves plugins, do you think it might be worth it to snatch the SSL buss comp? I currently use the TK audio hardware on my master buss.

I have no doubt you do. Given your name, if it's an Allmans reference, that is one sound I can never get in the studio, real or not real. The way Gregg distorts the lows on those 122's in some Filmore passages still makes me swoon. Heh, I'm not sure we could get THAT sound! The name is our band's name, and we all love the Allmans, but our music goes in a different direction. Our keyboardist is more of a Roy Bittan type piano player, but the Hammond still rocks. I've gotten pretty good at recording it. Placing it in a room via a well chosen reverb makes a big difference, by the way!

How are you guys recording your Nords? My wife has one, and I’ve been experimenting recordingnit through a fender twin and a Marshall plexi. To me, it Sounds way more real that way (as compared to DI), but imho it still pales in comparison to the real thing. I’m mostly using Rhodes/Wurlitzer sounds. Anything special you guys do to get a more authentic sound? For electro-mechanical pianos, recording a Nord Electro into a Twin Reverb (Silverface, though I have now converted it to Blackface) beat a real Rhodes (DI'd) so many times it wasn't funny. Same player. The Rhodes was tracked at another studio and we ended up redoing all the tracks. However, I now own a beautifully restored and upgraded Wurlitzer 200, and I swear nothing can touch it. It's instant "I Never Loved A Man". I'm recording it into a REDDI and to a DAV preamp for some extra gain. It's just heavenly.

I got one myself of the A100 variety, the “home” model with speakers. Of course the internal speakers are disabled and it’s hooked to a Leslie 147. Nothing compares to it.

Apparently these were captured with a Stanton turntable with a direct USB output. So: cheap converters, wrong stylus and most likely a RIAA curve that needs to be reversed. Suggestions? Yikes! How's the client? I hope they're not expecting a miracle. Or I hope their definition of "miracle" is obtainable for you. Still, sounds like it might be a fun project, actually! It IS a fun project! It's like solving a big puzzle. Fortunately the client is good - he's actually attempted to restore these tracks using Adobe Audition and came to a passable result, but I have already made his attempts bite the dust I have all these moving pieces that could be placed in a different order, all with different results: -De-crackle -Undo RIAA curve applied on capture -Filter unneeded/non existent frequencies -De-noise -EQ to make it sound as good as possible The only thing that goes first for sure is the decrackle. I'm still not sure if I should EQ it to sound good and leave the final denoise for last, or EQ after denoising. Same for the filter. I can't compress because it makes the noise more prominent.

When I got my gear I decided that I didn’t even want to LOOK at Stam’s name in my rack, so I flipped it. Also I think owning Stam gear speaks volumes about the kind of studio you have. I don’t think we should be “enablers” for this company.
I’d much rather spend a little more and have gear made by companies that I trust and that don’t cut corners on customer service, nor get their “marketing” for free in forums due to their dishonesty, while regular companies have to pay for it.
