Getting really interested in this especially given the price ; a little sad it doesn't have fig 8 for reducing bleed - any chance in future models Spock? Cheers, Ross

Yeah, weird! Just saw your post and listened again. I'm getting the piano in stereo, from the player's perspective, and the vocal up the middle. For example, at 0:55 in the clip, the first chorus, you see the video cut from the piano to Jeff, you see his right hand whanging away on the guitar strings, but I hear nothing but the vocal. I wonder if we're watching the same clip. I'm watching the one quoted up the page from this current conversation. Frank (surveman)'s post. It’s there I promise! It’s just quiet and kinda buried in the piano. You can even hear various points where his rhythm isn’t perfect, Listen a couple seconds after that chorus spot you mention. The acoustic pops out more for a second. I feel sure it’s the live acoustic take. There are a lot of live vocal things in the film, including just him tracking vocals where you only hear him in the room, not the track that’s in his cans. I’m positive it’s not overdubbed in those cases and he just sounds that good.

The weird thing to me is how perfect everything sounds. I think a lot of it is his impeccable feel and timing. I can hear the acoustic guitar. He's moving around the mic and it sounds somehow perfect, maybe it was overdubbed?

Cheers, Ross Hi Ross, There’s no plans to modify to the TG Microphone. I know it’s not the same, though Fwiw...Michael Wagener was quite astute when he pointed out how the mic eliminated his room. I had my wife on the mic (at the upright piano) in our open room, usually I have to put up blankets and baffles etc...—very lanois/howard here—anyways with this mic no need, just throw it up quickly get the sound and roll!

Sorry if it's in previous posts, I havent seen it ; what price are we talking? Cheers, Ross It's selling for $1,900, but I found a NAMM discount on Front End Audio for 15% off of that, so I spent a little over $1,500, which is really more than I wanted to spend, but I'm feeling positive all around. I've gotten a bit worn out with all the clone/price point talk and just like that it seems like a strong tool that's not attempting to be anything else. You will find many sounds in there and a mic performing beyond its price; rather than having a one trick pony, this is like having many ponies all great at different tricks. Enjoy!

What connection is the TG mic with the Jeff Lynn videos? How the heck did we get on that topic? LOL

My fault I think, I get into the weeds sometimes, and off topic. The TG mic is a seductive piece of gear!

Hey Adam, are you able to speak about the capsule some more? I'm curious about the platinum capsule on the REDD mic versus this gold one. That's the first mic that I've heard about with a platinum capsule, but I'm not studying these details usually. Why is a builder going with one or the other? I'm sure they give different results, but what qualities led to the platinum choice?

sirthought it’s simply what Wade feels is best for his circuit design and desired resultant performance.

Adam, when I saw you at NAMM Saturday, IIRC it was the #1 setting, along with whatever setting had extra "TG harmonics... That I preferred. What would be the proper description? Am guessing these were the most "Vintage Settings? Thanks, Chris Hi Chris, Setting one on the tape equalizer is all about that bass lol, however, in System A it will have more of the rich harmonic content you get from a TG amplifier, whereas if we were in System B, it would be comparatively more clean harmonically. As far as ‘vintage’ settings, there aren’t any; the mic isn’t cloning or attempting to copy any other mic, it’s on working to achieve the best result across a multitude of sources and scenarios.

Under what circumstances would the REDD mic be more desirable? Why would I pony up for the REDD over the TG, preamp aside?

Oops ,just realised Ive been thinking in Aussie dollars when having my 2 cents worth on pricing. If it means anything to anyone, you can multiply my figures by 3/4 for USD. Cheers, Ross

Isn’t the REDD a tube mike and the TG is fet or do I have this all wrong ?
Personally, all tube love aside, the TG design with the psu and non tube, and versitility: real voicings, not software emulations and an apparent ability to somewhat take the room out of the capture are really appealing in terms of mike behaviour I would value and not crazy money.
Seems very well conceived and executed.

So, all that remains is to hear/listen & decide. But I think the REDD mic is, without a doubt, one of the best mics out there right now. And, thank God, it's not a "clone"/copy of anything!

What connection is the TG mic with the Jeff Lynn videos? How the heck did we get on that topic? LOL After listening to the TG mic "electric guitar" video- where the U87 sounded very band limited compared to the more open TG mic- and the "Drums/Bass/Guitar" video, I was curious to hear how the Lynne video sounded again, because I had watched the documentary and remember that he used only his 87's. I think the open mic vs band limited discussion is an interesting one.

It's true, there aren't usually many bands at open mic nights.

I think the open mic vs band limited discussion is an interesting one. I had similar thoughts after hearing those TG demos. It makes the U87 sound downright *odd* by comparison and the U87 *isn’t* odd, it’s a sound featured prominently in about 80% of the records we all love. So that made me wonder, just what the hell is up with this TG mic that it makes studio staples like the U87 and 414 sound nasal and puny?

Interesting mic. I'd like to try one - or actually two - for awhile.
The thing with mics or synths or huge guitar sounds or really any type of sound is how it fits in the mix. Sometimes big is beautiful. And sometimes big is....well....too big. There's really only one way to know and that's to use it in a variety of contexts over time and see how it works. Demo's only go so far.
You've got to pick a mic that WORKS for any particular situation. As much as I love my KM53's, they don't get used nearly as much as my KM86's because quite often, the 53's are just TOO detailed. It's almost like walking into a bright light naked. TOO much detail. LOL Often, they are just not the right mic IMO.
But there's one thing that is for sure - we KNOW how a U87 works in context - in a record. (Fantastically IMO) And it's stood the test of time. If the TG mic makes you feel the U87 is broken, I'd be wondering about how I'd use the TG and what it would take to make it work right in the mix. When something throws my instincts upside down, the caution flags come out. All that said, I still REALLY wanna try them.... <<thumbsup>> Chadler. Love that a company is "doing their own thing!!!!!"

P.s. and fwiw...you can make the TG skinny too, it’s just that its sonic footprint is more on par with a tube mic than a FET; It’s up in your grill regardless of the way you shape it. Also in a way, it has this ‘don’t need a compressor’ thing going on, where it’s very uniform with how it responds to dynamics. Hope that makes sense...
In the middle of writing the manual...
