Excellent. I think the TG truly sounds like a remarkable microphone. Now if only Sweetwater would get one to ship me... Who's your guy there and when did you order? a few more went out this week. IsRael Foster’s my rep. I got on the list on 1/22. I don’t wanna try to cut in like or anything though. I know there’s high demand for the TG.

Also waiting on my order from sweetwater but I placed it a bit later. Sometime in early march. They did say it'd be a few weeks though, so fair enough.

ragan shoe sorry for the wait, quite a few peeps had pre-ordered when we announced during AES back in October. However, we did have some delays that were uncharacteristic for us; it’s worth the wait though.

It’s totally fine... ragan doesn’t mind waiting...check the Stam thread. Haha yeah...I have been waiting like a year or something for some of that stuff as well. I have confidence in Chandler to behave appropriately, though. I've got two REDD.47 preamps and an RS124. Love them. Incidentally, I recently discovered that running Floor Toms through that chain sounds absolutely amazing. Wasn't expecting the RS124 to be so good on drums in general since I expected it to be slower than it apparently is.

Different sounding? Yes. Better sounding? Not to my ears. At least not with that last video. I have an 87 and it doesn’t sound bad, Yes, different, but I have a purpose for the TG that I wouldn’t use the 87 for anyway. I’m going by what I heard in comparison, and have not heard the 87 vs the TG video. 87s never sound bad. They rarely sound extraordinary, but they never sound bad. They often times sound REALLY good to the point of excellent.

SirThinksAlot and I did a bunch of vocal/guitar tests yesterday afternoon. He brought his TG over to my shitty little space and manned the mouse while I did what I like to do with a new mic - play guitar and sing from about 3-4feet, sing a cappella at 12-18", and run a vocal through a rough mix. On the Vox/guitar, we did A and B settings at each twist of the knob in cardioid and omni through the ULN8 pre; on just plain vox A and B settings with each twist through the ULN8 pre; and in a mix A setting sampled at each twist through the Metric Halo ULN8 pres then through the Coil Audio CA-70.
Here are some random thoughts: this mic is really quiet - can't even hear it when it's cranked and you touch it to twist the knob or, for you OCD people, attempt to twist it in the shock mount or adjust the angle because it's not perfectly centered with your eyes (hey, that's a thing.) I hate the shock mount, but that's par for me. It will fit nicely in a standard Rycote, though, and it's a pretty light microphone. I didn't monitor the vox/guit or plain ol' vox through headphones (because why?) and haven't given them a listen to see how they fared, but heard lot's of ooo's and aww's from across the room. I had a brutal cold this week and was still hacking phlegm (no we didn't use a pop filter...he he) so I was croaking like Frog Sinatra.
We switched over to a song I'd just finished tracking electric guitars on before getting sick, put on some headphones and sang through the first verse on each setting in cardioid, first using the ULN8 pres and then the Coil Audio CA-70 wide open. Without reading anything about this mic, I guess each setting is some sort of EQ. Best I could tell without thinking to much (my superpower), some kind of high shelf of varying degrees or HPF or something. Anyway, the changes weren't subtle and weren't obnoxious, some obviously cut better then others, but any of them were usable. The TG had no sibilance issues for me (did I say I never use a pop screen?) and though I tend to hit ess's pretty hard, and they whistle through the gap in my front teeth, it was very forgiving. The mic exhibited non of that hi/mid pinch when I leaned into it, but maybe that's a thing with tube mics.
The TG really shined through the CA-70. At NFB fully counter clockwise, the CA-70 can be pretty clean sounding - open tube clean with a very physical and dimensional sound. The different switches were a bit more nuanced, still obvious, but more rounded. We picked the one we like best (facing the back of the mic, one click from center to the right), but honestly, any of them were usable. I think Alex preferred a more hifi sound, I prefer a more flat sound so I can EQ as needed as the song comes together in a mix and we landed somewhere between those preferences. Before bouncing it down for Alex to take home, I sent it through the Retro Sta/RND 5033 chain I used for vocals, rolling of a little of the bottom, but otherwise keeping the rest of the EQ in bypass and hit the Sta gently for about -10db at single and fast release so it would sit a little, but still be able to get a good picture of what the mic was doing.
This morning after reamping last weeks guitar tracks through my trusty Fulltone TTE and working on the rest of the song a bit, I farted around with the vocals some more. Hit the Sta a bit harder at double with a slightly slower release and rolled the 5033 high shelf up and those esses's that are always so brutal for me sounded nice and sizzly without ever wondering at what point I break and reach for a de-esser. Takes that high EQ very nicely. It shoved the vocal down a bit more with a bit more and it's hanging in there quite well. Frog Sinatra might have a take to use. Cool mic. When I get a mix together, I'll put up a link.

Yep, I'm slowly starting to get a little library of test clips to offer, if people are interested. Had a great time listening to Swafford play acoustic and sing yesterday. He was a trooper doing as many takes as we did to try to hear the differences. Just the settings between System A/B and the curve bender EQs, it really offers a lot of useful options.
Swafford is right, the Coil CA-70 pre gave these takes a really nice weight that worked well with the TG mic, but honestly the super clean quality of the Metric Halo pres was great too. And I've enjoyed my own tests with an Apollo 8p and Audient ASP800. You won't need to worry about preamp matching to get a good recording from this mic.
I am so pleased with the TG microphone. The test recordings gave me confidence that these vocal tracks were finished and ready to drop in a mix. The vocal sat great in the mix on the fully produced song. (System A and EQ setting 4 — which reminded me of a 47, with rolled off high end and up front mids.)
Sibilance wasn't an issue. Very quiet microphone with almost no handling noise.
Setting 3 was the most neutral and can safely be chosen on anything. But I often liked settings 4 and 5 best. None were bad. EQ setting 2 seems to have the most high end, which didn't always feel like the right choice when shooting out the solo'd source. But once it was in the mix of the song, it cut through surprisingly well.
Swafford's space isn't shitty at all. Comfy recording room and some drool-worthy gear. And a sweet doggy waiting for you when you finally emerge from the room. Hard to ask for more.

I haven't posted anything yet because I'm due to record a few different vocalists coming up. It's been fun to hear things on it so far. It does seem like the mic gets you most of the way to where you'd want a vocal. I seem to try to tweak a guitar track no matter what, mostly because I want to hear possibilities. I haven't recorded drums still.
I'd love to hear this with a REDD preamp, but I'm not aware of anyone with one in the area.
