I'm really intrigued by this mic and eagerly await reviews by fellow RGOers. But I'm confused why so many are shocked that a mic with BUILT IN PROCESSING sounds "better" than a vintage 47 and 87. We're really talking apples and oranges here, and to some degree A B comparisons are unfair. Perhaps Chandler has hit a home run with the TG's capsule, or the separate power supply will create a new standard for FET mics. But it could be that the uniqueness of this mic lies mostly in it's proprietary electronics, and that only time will tell if the TG becomes a great studio workhorse or a specialty mic. Hmmm...I hadn’t considered that. We’re talking EQ curve presets built into the TG, right? Maybe a more fair comparison would be the flat TG setting? Or apply similar eq curves to the other mics? I’ve heard all the patterns. It’s no less large and in charge sounding at the flat setting.

"The TG Microphone’s unique on-board EMI ‘Tape Equalizer’ section combined with its ‘Dual Tone System’, dedicated PSU and other features create an extremely flexible microphone" is how Chandler is explaining the tonal characteristics of the mic. I think that hearing the mic on it's flattest of settings would be interesting, but in fairness this mic was designed specifically to utilize the EMI tape eq. That may be the reason we're not yet hearing any demos of all of the mic's settings. For me it will come down to what Ragan and others think of the TG after a few weeks of actual use. The demo videos sound downright steroidal--and that feature could be very useful in helping singers love the sound of their voice when tracking, as most don't!

IMHO the evidence is showing how well the TG microphones does, with the various on board "tweaking" options. Isn't this similar to the "why/how" the U87 is so venerated within the Industry-how well it EQ's on various sources?

I personally don't want to be popping through 20 something presets on a mic when a singer is looking to get started. I'd rather put a mic that works and add what I specifically think I need on the console.
Just a different perspective.

I'd rather put a mic that works and add what I specifically think I need on the console. Just a different perspective. That was my initial take when the microphone was announced. I swiftly fell into a different line of thought after hearing those great samples. Spock saying that drum sound was a single overhead (with a second mic for room reverb thrown in on parts) really wow'd me. The anticipated sound is worth it to me, but it will require some leg work upfront. My plan is to invite several singers over to shootout all the settings, basically my training ground to learn the differences on male/female, rock/jazz/classical, etc. Hopefully it will be fun and I might even get some artists interested in recording with it. If I'm able to develop a feel for what results I'd be getting on each setting, then during a real tracking situation I can more easily deal with one or two possibilities, after discussing with the artist what vocal qualities fit their creative aspirations. I might not have as many mic options as you, so this could be that "swiss army mic" they are marketing working on me. I now shootout singers on SM7B, RE20, 421, Octavamod 319, and Cascade Fathead. Honestly, I've been satisfied with that group but there's always the GAS pushing you to upgrade or find some improvement.

So, are there any updates on when this is coming out? I was hoping to get one from sweetwater, specifically.

I was told on the 25th "good news! They've started to build the mics." Granted, they said before it would be arriving on the 28th. Good to hear they get started so early.

I've seen some shops selling on reverb but I'm not sure if these are also preorders or if some places already have them. I'd prefer to buy from sweetwater though as they've always treated me very well.

If one arrives to Funky Junk in London by this week, I might walk away with it on Monday! I’m visiting from Spain for a vocal mic shootout.

Since I record mostly in others' studios or my rehearsal space, I've already started to line up a room I've worked in and different singers to try this out on. Hoping I can get a space with a decent piano. I don't think that will be it's strength, but I'd like to try as many different sources. I'll post the shootout results once it's all put together.
I'm interested to hear how it handles a drum overhead in a big room versus smaller space (like my room).
Just waiting for Front End to say it's shipped.

Sweet. I did place an order! Looking forward to trying this out on voice and guitars and perhaps drums and saxophone.

Just to make it official and all... Nice! I'm very excited. My sweetwater rep had said a week or two, I believe, but maybe it'll actually be faster?

The TG microphone came today! I received mic #58. No chance to go to the studio to hear it yet, but I certainly unboxed it right away. Build quality looks good. I am surprised that at this price point it did not come in a case to hold everything. And after seeing the hefty PSU they used at NAMM, I'm surprised with what came, which is this small thing that uses a wall wart. I'm sure it works fine, but just unexpected. Oh, and kind of funny. The mic smelled like some kind of mint. That's a new one. Pleasant. Look forward to hearing this soon.

Fwiw it was the same PSU at NAMM (was sitting on the shelf,) the other bigger PSU on the table was for the REDD Microphone and totally different beast required for that design; sorry for any confusion. P.S... make sure to read the manual regarding how to insert the mic in to the shock mount so as not to damage the felt. Or...just flip push the ring latches in the opposite direction, therefore over-flexing the rings wide enough to slip the mic head through. If you have any questions, do hit me up!

Thanks for touching base, Adam. Well, I just checked the Dale Pro video again. You can see the PSU for REDD, which I did recognize, but right next to it I see another box I assume is the PSU for TG. Maybe not? About one third of the REDD PSU size. Anyway, the biggest surprise was that it's a wall wart device versus something with IEC mains power cord or just something more sturdy. It may be fine, but that's my reaction. I did wonder if the separation might make it sound cleaner. There was no manual or documentation in the box. Please send a PDF link if you can. {EDIT: Just found a PDF on the website!} I noticed that getting the shock mount on is tricky due to the switches. I'm hoping I don't end up scratching the mic a bunch when I'm taking this on and off.

The other thing on the table was the Little Labs Monotor (headphone amp,) the PSU/black box on was on the shelf behind.. The PSU is inside the black box with LED not the wart. You will not scratch the mic, uhm...PM me your number and email address, I'll show you.
