I've heard good things about this mic...but I'm not the best guy to talk to about drum miking. Chad Cromwell endorses them - and he's a monster - I move sessions around depending on his availability. (Neil Young/Mark Knopfler/Lady A, etc.) www.miktekaudio.com/products/pm10-snaretom-microphone

From my experience, these are the best condensers for Toms (hands down) in order of price.... Telefunken 251s, Neumann U87s and AT4033s
Let the arguments begin!

I hate when I nail my vintage 251 with my drumstick...

Oktava MK-012s are cool on toms. AKG C451s sound pretty good, too. If you want something more sluggish, C414s will do. Just watch out for that cymbal leakage!

SNIP AKG C451s sound pretty good, too. If you want something more sluggish, C414s will do. Just watch out for that cymbal leakage! If those are your findings, I'm wondering what kind of toms and drumheads you experienced to arrive at those conclusions. Black Dots? Emperors?
I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said I have recorded close to 1000 different drum kits with many many many different microphones. 451s in general do not make very good tom-tom mics due to their sudden drop off at 300hz down to floor level, and their lack of proximity effect to give the oomph needed for effective tom close mic track usage in a mix.
414s have multiple polar patterns and can be tailored to help with leakage, but just like with 421s, cleaning up your tracks later will certainly help. The other, most important, thing to consider with 414s is that there are MANY different kinds of 414s. Yes, certain ones like the ULS will sound sluggish but a 414EB, the new 414 XLS or the brighter 414XLII are full of life and detail and can be quite effective.
And of course 87s are great on Toms too.
The only problem with using expensive condensors on toms is the ability of almost any drummer to gash the headbasket with such destructive precision, that you'd think he was doing it on purpose!

Thats why I said affordable ! no way my 87 is going by anything but a mouth with a pop filter between.

I just don't think that's within most of our reach...That's awesome if you're a full-fledged studio with $75k sunk into your mic locker...but most of us have to book studio time to get that.

It is a great condenser tom mic with decent rejection. I still prefer a matched set of Senn MD421s but the CADs are a very popular choice as a condenser option - for good reason!

howdy!!!
i'd go with mk012 with pads and hyper caps or shure ksm137
don't right off dynamics though. akg d202/d224 it's a dynamic with condenser traits. beyer m201 is another choice.

I've recorded hundreds of drum kits with many different microphones and can say that we're not all going for the same sounds and that there are no hard and fast rules to this audio engineering business! (Just giving you a little guff!) The best results I've gotten out of C451s on toms has been with both top and bottom mics. I'll use a CK3 on top and a CK1 on the bottom. I'm not certain how the frequency response of the CK3 varies relative to the CK1 or if it exhibits the same alleged roll-off mentioned above. Regardless, it's not my usual start point, but I've gotten satisfactory results from this setup. I'll grant you the great variance in C414s and should have specified which model. My statement about the sluggishness of a 414 refers not to frequency response, but transient response. The large diaphragm capsule can tame the transient of a spiky drum a bit. (A dynamic, of course, will do an even better job of this.) I need to hear these CAD microphones on toms. I've heard nothing but good things about them in this application.

I've used a 414 TLll on snare, sounds great, never came close to hitting that mic. probably had something to due with the fact that i tethered my elbows to the wall behind me.

Josephson E22S...but you did say 'affordable'. Then comes the question, "Why a condenser?" Shure SM57 or Sennheiser MD421 would be great and very affordable. Or skip direct tom mics and go with the tried and true Glyn Johns method. I digress. www.danalexanderaudio.com/glynjohns.htm

I say affordable... not 700-1000 per mic, 3-400 is ok...
I understand some mics will fit certain genre's of music. I have some dynamic mics e604's, 57's, I want some condensers for a different flavor of tom sound.

The new Shure mics intrigue me... Ronan at Geearslobs says the KSM32's ?? are his favorite drum mics... I forget which ones and for what application but wouldn't mind some shure's hanging around...

I'm digging a couple ribbons in glyn johns varient, a fet 47 fok, and a self modded Oktava mk319 condenser on snare, i'm gonna try this set up with m/s room mics(C12 clone/ribbon or fig8 condenser) in the near future. My modded mk319 also sounds like the song "thank you" by Zep on an acoustic straight up, it's a killer mic. 319 can be had w/modds for about $300 hope that helps

Im going to borrow a few 179's from my keyboard bud to try out. I really like the KSM137 on high hat from that Ben Sesar in Nashville ClassicAPI vid on youtube...

I have liked U87's and EB 414's, both sound nice. I don't always use condensers for toms. Heck I just did a record with a 2 mics on the whole kit.
I have wanted to hear the new Joly mics that are suppose to be his new u67 thing. If they sound anything like they are reported to they would probably be great tom mics and affordable.

Johnkenn I still gotta try some of the Mikteks out. Maybe trade my TLM 103 for one.
