I really like the sound of the Valvet X, has a more transparent midrange than the 87i, smoother upper mids and more open top than ai or i.
Josephson C715 is probably my favorite modern design, though, probably because it has a darkish liquid midrange but delicate not super-bright top and has no sibilance ever.
Just sounds really nice in a mix for indie stuff where the vocal needs to be articulate but not sitting on everything else, and I feel like it could be molded easily with eq.

I also sang through the C715 at NAMM, with Mr. Josephson "right there", at the booth. Very impressive too, and I did notice the "no sibilance". Chris

I have no idea what flagship vocal mic is but on most female and male vocals I go back to the UMT 70. It just sounds right, sepcial with vintage mic pres.....

It's not the most expensive mic mentioned here, but don't be fooled by that. The Vanguard V13 tube condenser is pretty stunning to me. It may be ambitious to say this, but to my ears, it's what I imagine the child of a 251 and U47 would be like. It also looks gorgeous.

The M49 is becoming my favorite... it is more smooth/neutral/applicable I think than even the 47 in terms of people it will work on. When I started out building mics, I thought the 47 would be the main thing I did but now I'm getting more interest in M49's and I'm starting to lean in that direction myself.

Welcome to the M49 fan club Chad! I agree it’s the mic you can just hang and it probably will never disappoint. It’s almost like cheating.

I’ve been eyeing that for a bit.

I’ve been eyeing that for a bit. Interested in this too. I think if I do another mic, it will be that one. But otherwise, the U47 is just killing it on everything. I know people say it's better for some things and not others, but I use it for everything and I've never found a case that I didn't at least like it or prefer it on everything from male/female voice or instruments.

We talking on original U47? I wish! No it's a Thiersch M7, AMI transformer and 608 tubes in a generic body. Sounds super close to the real thing, even Shannon said so after he checked it out when I built it.

The mics that gave me the "wow" factor on vocals have been a Neumann U48 on male vocals and a Miktek CV4 with a Beesneez K7 on female vocals. I went around a lot trying to find a vocal mic for an alto voice that has a little harshness in it. The CV4/K7 was pretty easily the best mic for that job. I absolutely hated the CV4 with the stock capsule but with the K7, it's a whole new thing. I've used Wunder CM7/GTS/M7, Soundelux 251, U47, TLM149, U87, U67, AT4060 and assortment of less expensive mics. All those had great characteristics, but for me the top two were something a little more special. In the end, I do think there are enough variances in capsules that you really need to check individual mics. Three of the same mics might give three different sounds (within the same family).

I’ve been eyeing that for a bit. I haven’t heard one, but everybody is using the same circuit, with the 49/50 amplifier it really is almost all about the capsule. Somewhere in storage I have 2 bodices I bought on Group DIY that I should just have Chad build out for me, but in the end I would probably have Shannon tune the Capsule. In fact as Ihave said before If I could get Rick or Dan to track down the Musichead / Sound Summit pair I’d have him tune them as close to those as possible.

I’ve gotta say, I’ve been having some great luck with my U87ai into my Demeter VTMP2B tube preamp. I’m pretty sure this is the sound I had always expected to get from the U87ai right out of the gate. I recorded some female vocals and my own for some BG vox for a studio vocal commission I’m working on. Using my FleA 49 for lead vocals, but the U87ai/Demeter combo for the big vox.

Today prior to tracking I shootout a Flea 47, Bock 251, Coles 4038 and a Neumann U77 on someone I can't mention except to say he does a great Johnny Cash impersonation and formally fronted a band named after a 1951 novel by Nicholas Monsarrat. The Flea 47 and Bock have both been used previously but this time my money is on either the Coles or the Neumann U77 (since it was refurbished by Gunter Wagner) even though they are very different. Today's test will solidify my opinion on which of these is my flagship vocal mic at least in this context although I already know which is the most versatile. And that has to be the deciding factor if you are picking just one mic to be your 'flagship' vocal mic so-to-speak. It doesn't mean it will be the best in all situations, that is impossible, but it has to be consistantly good across the board and basically never sound bad or wrong while allowing some fine tuning to make the end result still very desirable. Funny, I just did a vocal session and the brief was they wanted a Nick Cave, and your guy type vocal... I would think the coles would fly on him. Only ever saw him once, opening for the Stones. cheers Wiz Speaking of Nick Cave, does anyone here know if he has a vocal mic of choice and what that might be?

Cant waiting more to hear it. Everyone can build his own m49.

Your build looks good and while I don’t disagree that anybody can build a good mic, I have found the best builds are buy guys who have played around with some of the values and component choices so there is something to be said for having somebody who knows what they are doing if you want a great mic. I know as a big DIY guy I’m going against every thing I stand for.

I've seen a bunch of photos of Nick singing into an M49. I believe that's what Nick Launay usually records him with.
