The M49 is becoming my favorite... it is more smooth/neutral/applicable I think than even the 47 in terms of people it will work on. When I started out building mics, I thought the 47 would be the main thing I did but now I'm getting more interest in M49's and I'm starting to lean in that direction myself. Hi, long time lurker here. Im actually building M49 clone for my home studio. Im using body from groupdiy and BV11 transformer from Moby. I will use propabyl Maiku K47 capsule or Thiersh M7 blue. Cant waiting more to hear it. Everyone can build his own m49. Did you have to wind your transfo ? As I recall, they were not complete built transfos, right ?

Welcome to the M49 fan club Chad! I agree it’s the mic you can just hang and it probably will never disappoint. It’s almost like cheating. I'll always have to thank ericn for pushing me into the club one mic at a time. In case anyone is interested I posted clips of the FleA 47 vs FleA49 vs the MK67 with a Tele EF86 tube on another thread. Since we are talking about flagship mics I thought it might be relevant to anyone who may want to hear the differences between a 47, 49, and 67 style mic, even if I do think the MK67 is a little darker than a real U67.

Speaking of Nick Cave, does anyone here know if he has a vocal mic of choice and what that might be? He's a FOAF, I will ask... Which Nick?

Just confirmed, M49 in the studio, but Beta 58A live... That's awesome. Thanks for the info. Granted, not everyone sounds like Nick Cave, but I've always liked the tonality and presentation of his voice on Bad Seeds albums. I wonder how long the M49 has been his go to? I'm guessing at least back into the 90s, if not before.

To Avgatzeblouz: Moby winds the transformer... Pleas check this groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=66764.0Swart: i will let you know. I designed my own boards and used grommets and chinese "double pins". It's basically Oliver Archuts "m49" circuit. But I made some values changes and used russian 6s6bv tube... I didn't use 1G resistors but 150M and 100M resistors same as in geniue circuit. I also will testing feedback cap from anode to grid. It's all about matter of testing. I'm finishing the power supply now.

Quint Not sure, he lives near Hastings and is friends with a couple of guys I know there that sometimes work with him (David Tibet from Current 93 and my mate Michael who runs the Bladud Flies! lathe cutting service and mastering house). I think they've known him since the 90's, possibly before, so not sure what he was using back in the day for the Bad Seeds stuff. I could ask. As an aside, Tibet put me and a couple of friends on the guest list for the Current 93 gigs in Berlin last year, and Nick Cave's name was below ours, that was a cool moment.

So svart how much did it cost in money and man hours to build your version of the M49? I see the second hand price for originals is around $7k, way out of my budget for a mic.

Oh I didn't build the M49, I built the U47. For the 47 it was around 800$ total because I skimped on the body and had a number of parts already, and because I hand wired it and machined some parts it probably took 20+ hours to build total. AMI/TAB used to sell a kit for the M49 that was around 1200$ or 1500$ I think, but I don't know the pedigree of the capsule they sold with it. I'd probably see if they'd sell the kit without and get the Thiersch M7 (blueline) for it.

They had tiers of what you could get, with a Chinese supply, or a full USA one, etc. After Oliver died, they didn't update their website in forever and stopped replying to emails for some time, and I didn't really need the m49 in addition to the u47, so I didn't check back. So there is still a web page for one of the versions of m49 on their site but I have no idea if they still sell the kit or not.

How is Tab-Funkenworks M49 kit? I’ve been eyeing that for a bit. I love mine, nice metal work and power supply. Found an old K49 and a great ac701 for it. My favorite mic.

Flagship means your Top of the line, your best foot forward presentation.
So it depends on your budget. if you get a Neumann U87, you look good. If you’re on a budget, there are number of really good microphones that have come out recently that look classy and sound superb, the Rowell Delphos, the Lewitt 640 and their tube version, the Warm WA47 are all under a grand and sound great.
Me, if I wanted to have a trustworthy mic that is a true knockout and that I would consider a flagship, I would consider the Chandler Redd microphone first. Unless you can afford a vintage U67 or a vintage U47 that mic is absolutely outstanding and is a no compromise solution if you truly want a flagship microphone.

Has anyone here ever had or played around with a BLUE Cactus? One of my mentors had one in a studio he worked at in the beginning of his career and he absolutely loved it. I know it’s kind of U47ish, but not. I’m curious how it compares to mics like the FleA47 or other similar mics.

I’m loving the M49ish mic Chris at Barbaric built for me. I chose all of the components from research and talking with Chris and he was great to work with. The build cost me around $1400 total for parts and labor. Dany Bouchard D7 capsule, AMI BV11R transformer, Russian 6s6b tube, studio 939 m49 body.
It’s similar to the Gefell UM70s in a lot of ways. I’d say the Gefell has a bit more presence and the Barbaric is meatier in the lows and low mids, as well as having the tube mic sound. They are both super smooth and take eq phenomenally.
I think Chris is charging around $375 for a custom build and the rest depends on how expensive of parts you want to source. I might start saving up for a 701k tube to put in mine.

Cool. I basically sold all of my budget mics to pick up my FleA 49. I really love it on my voice. I'm just looking for a few decently priced, but high quality mics to add to my locker. Since this sits in the U47 vein I thought it might be a good choice considering it pops up on eBay and reverb for $1500 every now and then. Also looking at a few 67 options, but I've narrowed that down already.

Chris is awesome, he put my AMI 49 kit together for me. He's also built me one of his mini 47's with a Thiersch Redline M7 and a c37 clone with a Sony capsule. All 3 of these I prefer to my 87ai with the 67 mod (which I still love but it goes a bit unused in comparison these days). I highly recommend anyone looking for amazing mics that stay in a budget to check him out. The one thing I will say is that I discovered it's worth the time and money to get him the best capsule you can afford then let him do his thing. I had the c37 clone for a year with a budget capsule, it was fine but when I got the Sony cap it went from cool on some things to amazing in many more applications.

Hey I have my lottery tickets for tonight’s $1.6 billion dollar drawing. That is what I'm counting on! Too bad the odds are against us, but you can't win if you don't play! A glimmer of hope in the grandest of odds! If I win this lottery I promise you I will be building a studio in Nashville for the RGO Members with deep discounts, and put John Kennedy in charge of it! I will need everyone's help designing it and sourcing gear for it here from RGO!!! That would be my number one project! Going now to get tickets!
