Original 3a's or the UAClassics version?
I've not used the reissue ones but an original 3a is really hard to beat.
Ditto. I'll take my SA3a's (the original SA's - SERPENT) over my super custom LA2a's any day. Every time I think about it, I wish I'd built another pair of the Serpent 3a's instead of the ultra tweaked 2a's I had built.... <sigh> Hey Bill, I've heard you mention your custom LA2A a few times. Care to elaborate on what you had built? I've been wanting a 2 channel la2a compressor, but with variable (faster) attack/release. Had a VLA II for a little bit that I thought of having modded but I didn't really dig the build quality of it, or the look to be honest.

Had a VLA II for a little bit that I thought of having modded but I didn't really dig the build quality of it, or the look to be honest. I had a drip kit built for me with all the "good" stuff in it. Sowters, NOS tubes, etc.. The T4B's were difficult to get matched. Hell, they were difficult to GET period. It's developed weird stuff in it over the year or two that I've had it. It was built by a very good builder. Just one of those things I think. If you're going to do DIY, best if you don't have to ship it cross country when it develops problems. Of course, being able to diagnose and fix yourself is the real answer. But that's not me. So..... I get frustrated with it from time to time. Sounds great when it's working right.

Anyone here put a deposit on one of these? Or is that to personal of a question to ask? I did. I doubt that it will sound like an actual Fairchild. I doubt that Stam has an actual Fairchild to compare with. But, I'm betting it's going to be a sweet compressor on it's own merit. Plus, it looks cool as hell and the price is fairly friendly for being a stereo (and dual mono?) tube compressor with quality iron.

Im sure i'll be a cool compressor. Id love to get one. Want an IGS Tubecore first though.

Just ordered a StamChild, now it's a race to see if it ships before the WarmChild or KlarkChild.

I'm debating about whether or not I should get one of these. I don't "need" one and I wasn't even considering one at the $3000 price but, with the 50% discount I was offered, I'm now considering it.
I just don't know if I would use it enough to justify the use of money and rack space. I'm also not in love with replacing those tubes on a regular basis.
I just need to figure out how much of this is simply because it's a Fairchild versus how much real world use I would actually get out of it.
For those of you that have Fairchilds, how much use do you get out of them and are you using them more so in tracking or mixing?

I've read of them being used for tracking. Mostly mixing and mastering though.
for 50% off Id take it. It'll be a killer compressor. That said, I guess it also depends on your usage, it'll be a great unit but not your typical compressor.

For those of you that have Fairchilds, how much use do you get out of them and are you using them more so in tracking or mixing? So I’ve never used an actual Fairchild but have used the drip clone once. If I understand this correctly, and you’re being offered one at $1500, it would be crazy not to get it. I’m sure you’d be able to sell it second hand if you don’t like it. As for the tubes...if taken care of properly the tubes should last a loooong time, like years and years and years. Also, in my small experience with the drip, it’s great for both tracking and mixing.

yeah theres no rules in audio. Some of the best shit every recorded or mixed was by using something odd for something it wasn't designed for.

The thing is that I would be looking at using this primarily during tracking as opposed to mixing.
