This is a warm and fuzzy thread, perfect for a rainy day. Congrats to all Audioscape owners, would love to hear some clips.

Has anyone experimented with different tube brands with the Opto?

Has anyone experimented with different tube brands with the Opto? Good question. But I will say this, I have been swapping out tubes on compressors for about 25 years. Every compressor I have used until I got the Audio-scape opto - I have swapped tubes except for a Pendulum 6386 (and I have used a lot of them). The Audio-scape opto - is the first (other than the Pendulum 6386) where I was "floored" by how it sounded immediately with the tubes that are originally in it and thought - Wow - I do not even have to consider swapping tubes." Having said - it is always fun to try and see what other results can be achieved.

Has anyone experimented with different tube brands with the Opto? Tried a Telefunken 12AX7 in V1. Supposed to be a more "CL1B" sound. Very nice, and different sonic emphasis. NOS RCA blackplate is being used by some here. Next for me to try is NOS GE long-plate, but as has been said the stock tubes are great.

Here was his response: Good call on that Telefunken tube btw on V1. That is my favorite tube there as well!
Thanks, Chris

Charlie speaks highly of the RCA blackplate, so just more evidence of great options based on personal preference.

My experience is the Opto comes with a very nice tube in the V1 slot, but the curious part of me has to roll tubes just to see.
I've tried some Telefunken's in the V1 slot and found as one might expect that it brought out the top and mid's to the sonics in a tight way, and the RCA's I've tried have generally seemed a little fatter on the bottom and harmonics. I liked something about both, but my preferred V1 slot tube currently in the Opto is a RCA long black plate from the 50's. If one is only using 1 main chain of the same mic and source like singer/songwriters do, then whether it's bright or dark may factor in your tube choice subjectively for some, if the emphasis knob doesn't quite get what you're after.

Having said - it is always fun to try and see what other results can be achieved. Aw man, THANK YOU so much!! This is something that we think is a NECESSITY when recreating these classic circuits - using premo, NOS tubes! We use NOS in all of our tube gear, with the exception of the V-COMP which uses a JJ 6386 LGP (for obvious reasons - even a YEAR ago we were still able to find enough NOS GE 6386's to be able to use them in many, many units but it seems as each months passes, they get more and more scarce and simply rise in price almost exponentially. It got to the point where we simply could NOT find them reliably enough to use them in every unit - so JJ it is and honestly, they sound GREAT! The triodes are matched very tight, they're low-noise and they perform at a remarkable level. @toddj and mike - absolutely, MY personal favorite is 50's RCA Blackplate, which Chris loves as well but he prefers the Telefunken overall for his personal sonic preferences. We've found that the BEST 'all-around' NOS tube are GE Medium-Plate Grey's - which are definitely awesome sounding. I just LOVE the thick and RICH quality of the RCA black plates personally - and I've done a GOOD DEAL of tube rolling in the OPTO COMP. Kind of a cool sidenote - V1 of the OPTO is a GREAT way to not only test the noise level of any given tube, but also it's overall tonality. V1 is SO SENSITIVE and contributes so much to the overall sound that it can really help one learn the subtle sonic differences between the myriad of tube brand/make/vintage. Pretty neat!!! 🙏❤😍👌

I've been using the Opto for a while little while now. I wanted to offer an upgrade wish for the guys at audioscape, especially since I saw your new VComp special edition. If you could make an Opto Comp with similar flexibility as the Summit TLA-100, I think that would be a power house compressor. Now I know nothing about circuits and am not a tech, so I have no idea what that would entail, but If I had a compressor with the flexibility of the TLA-100 that sounds like an LA2A, that would be amazing. Just a thought from a member of the family.

The LA2A's simplicity is it's genius, and if you started adding side chains, attack and release, blend knobs etc. the price would probably double.

My wife and I are just ridiculously dynamic singers. So it would come in handy to have the additions, plus the beautifully open, but smooth sound.
