Where did you see that? I was under the impression this would be a limited run. Prepare to download in your pants. ...snip "Prepare to download in your pants." Could this be the perfect signature line?

In general I think the top end is really close. The vintage mic has more of an extended low end, but this has already been discussed here and a change in the tube seems to be the answer. I really do wish I had the funds.

You would think they could have hired a professional Violinist for goodness sakes... Lmao! It was probably my favorite sample. Violin can be such a pain to record. Some how I imagine that player wasn’t a problem as all.

The vintage 67 sounded a little fuller in the low end, perhaps a bit attenuated in the highs, but they're close enough to say the reissue really is a U67, not just an attempt to cash in on the model number. Since the originals are 50 + years old, there's no way to be sure the new one doesn't sound the same as the vintage one did when it was new.

This thing keeps me hot and bothered...but there's just no way I can swing it...much less, justify the purchase in this climate.

I don't understand this type of "shootout". Different takes? Different distances? Why couldn't they put up the 2 mics together (side 2 side or one upside down over the other) & record the SAME TAKE - going in into twin pres? I didn't get anything out of it.

If you ever tried one of these, it's trickier than it seems. Different takes can be different, but so can the placement of two mics on the same take. I've heard good results from both techniques, and I've tried both myself. In my shootouts, I've often done different takes, which is obviously not perfect, but I seem to get a better feel for how something sounds that way, especially after multiple tracks. Why exactly, I''m not sure.
I agree that different distances is very bad. I keep my chair and mic stand in exactly the same position when I do mine.

Has any of us with experience on the original U67's weighed in here? I thought the new one [at NAMM] sounded like a record. Sounded great. And I'd never used one. Always U87's or others. Somehow we/I managed to make do.

I had a copy of a huge international survey, but I can't find it at the moment. It showed the U87 was by far the most common mic in studios, something like 5 or 10 times more 87's than any other mic. That thing just works on most anything, and vocals almost seat themselves in a mix.

I really do wish I had the funds. You can remove a jumper in the Re-issue that adds more low end. Personally, I don't think it needs more low end. Anyway, I would hardly call this a shootout. Its almost like VK wants customers to be confused.

I helped a friend record some '60s drum samples at Criteria. We set up a variety of common mikes from the '70s and then it occurred to me that we also needed a 67 overhead. When we brought it up there was the drum sound from so many '60s and '70s records that people always want us to twist knobs to get.

I have to admit, on the drums I was disappointed. The acoustic guitar, to a degree. The violin I think I actually preferred the reissue.
The snare punch seems to disappear on the reissue. There is also more of that midrange forwardness in the original. I do think the reissue sounds great, though. I can't spend that kind of cash chasing a sound knowing it would leave me wanting in most cases. If a tube swap would fix it, then I'd consider it. But for that money, you really shouldn't have to...

I've never, ever gotten close to it. The 67 is the key.

I've heard different tubes cause those kinds of differences. There is also the 40 Hz. high pass filter that some people disable and the output impedance setting and pad. A true apples to apples comparison would require having some serious know-how. If the vintage unit was ever modified, all bets are off.
