As a project studio owner now, I no longer need a mic for every occasion, there two "never used unless there's a guest reason" as I do have folks come play and sing...
Those are the old 414eb with its mid scoop (though not as much as the ULBS MICS that once lived here)...and my childhood owned 421 with its huge midrange honk. Being the opposite ends of "colorful mic as EQ" spectrum, they make nice end pieces. I have a drummer friend who swears the new 421s don't sound the same, blah...don't know--but, that's enough to keep it around. I KNOW 414s don't...so, with those aside...the rest, I'll give with use case, again, since it's a project studio mostly in terms of tracking, and that's (IMO/E) the view a project studio owner should take rather than "here's a lot of colors..." which is necessitated by the nature of different clients with different instruments every day...
Sm7b...Leslie bottom...guitar cabs..."everything" when doing writing demos...guest vocalists who need mid forward (414 for the opposite)
Pair of sm81s....Leslie top...acoustic guitar...hand percussion...piano
Vintage Gefell UM70s...MY vocals only since it was cleaned...tenor sax (where it KILLS...holy crap)...room mic for amps
Royer 121...amps....piano. I've often thought I should sell the Gefell for a second because it's SO wonderful on piano and Leslie (though frankly Leslie "wind" is likely the cause of its reribboning couple years back)...alto sax...and it also does second best on tenor sax
Since EPs are a tube DI thing...and bass has been traditionally...that's it. Really, if I were going to buy more, I'd grab second Royer for the piano...and sell the Gefell for an M269 since it would render it mostly useless here. But, last I looked, those were fetching $8-10k...so, that's just not gonna happen. I don't really think that highly of my voice! Ha.
