For what it's worth. Oktava Mk2500 MJE mod Oktava MK319 MJE mod 2 x AT4050 MJE hulk 990 3 x CAD M179 CAD E100 (original) Oktava MK012 matched pair MJE mod MJE ultimate Sdc (mxl 910) 2 x Audix TR40 omni ' s Shinybox ribbon EV RE320 Heil Pr 40 AT250 3 x e604 2 x Audix i5 E609 Think that's it. How do u like the mje mk2500? Tony, I love it. Nice and smooth, and really responds to different pres. Used through my zenpro modded gap 73, it's got a nice lowend and top. Used through the vp28's it gives a little more mid push but still smooth on top. It's just a good smooth mic that really let's you hear changes in source or recording chain. I bought it for a singer/song writer/folk project were the singer can get sibilent and harsh when pushing it. It was perfect. For the price of a used one then the mod it was a good buy.

How do u like the mje mk2500? To expand on this, what did he do to the 2500? He removes the resonance disc, changes the head basket, and upgrades the electronics in the mic body. He does not do anything to the psu, unless you have a new one that has a hum issue. I was glad I sent it to him since the original owner had removed the disc but did not put the screws back into the capsule. I have not ventured into mic mods or building yet. The matachung c 12 may just get me to take the plunge.

At the time, he was modding the Chinese versions with a better power supply and some other components I think, but told me there was nothing that he could do to the Russian one. I'm curious if he could bring it to another level now.

As far as my research went China never copied the mic it self. He must have been just talking about the psu. I had a small window of time from when I received the mic to send it back out for the mod, so I could have it back in time for the sessions. I never really tested it out before hand. The MK012 mods that mje did sold me on his services. I had used my set for 4 years before I sent them out, so I knew them pretty well pre mod. They came back with lower self noise and a smoother 3 kHz and up top end. Totally worth it, since that was what bugged me about them. Pre mod would not have been a good comparison anyway since the capsule was only being held together by 4 screws. Hope this helps.

I actually modded a mk 2500 for a friend, I pulled the inner mesh and resonator disc, damped the housing, replaced the coupling cap with a poly relcap, replaced all the electolytics with Elna silmic ll, and put super low esr caps in the psu, the biggest mod was removing the tube (soldered directly to the pcb!!) and replacing it with a telefinken nos, I had to nip out the pcb and glue a tube socket in, it was tight and stressful, but I pulled it off, and it sounded great for that night, then my buddy john took it, and I haven't talked to him in months lol I have no real time with it, and I'm wondering if it's worth it to pick one up and do it again?? It seemed a little lurchy sounding at the time, PSU sub par I think??

My MK012's actually have a completely different PCB in them. When "upgrading" the mics with a couple parts, the original PCBs simply fell apart. Even the slightest heat from the iron caused the copper to pull up off the substrate. I've never seen anything like it before, and nothing since. Anyway, I was forced to layout and etch my own PCBs for the MK012, while making some changes to make things fit better. I also used some switchcraft XLR parts to replace the cheap connectors that were in the mics.

It seemed a little lurchy sounding at the time, PSU sub par I think?? Tony, I think it is worth picking up another one. That is if you can find one for a good price. You have some nicer mics, so I am not sure if it will fill a hole or not. I needed the darker top and thickening quality of the mic, and i found one cheap. I think I am $500 all in, so a good deal in my book for what the nu-2500 brought to the table. I don't know if Joly changes component values or not, he just states premium electronics upgrade and I did not ask. I will say, I have found mixing vocals that were recorded with the Nu-2500 much easier. They just sit nicely, take compression and EQ well. I overdubbed a vocal for a record I was mixing and out of the 3 mics used the 2500 track came together faster with less EQ. I will ask my clients if they mind me posting some clips if anyone want to hear.

Ward just pulled out his schlong... Yeah, scrolling through the replies, my first reaction was: you guys are well hung. My humble collection: 1 U87ai (beautifully tuned by Andreas Grosser) 1 Grosser U47 1 TLM 149 (that I share with my musical partner) 1 Royer R-121 1 Gefell MV691/M70 1 KM184 1 D12 A couple of SM57s I'm not sure what else I need - as opposed to what I want. Oh yeah, definitely a U67, if only I could afford one. C12s would also be nice , maybe I'll ask Tony to build me a C12 one of these days... Basically all I record here is vocals, guitars/bass and lately, drums with four mics, and the mics I have cover those needs. But then, there's the never-ending GAS. Did I mention a pair of 414s yet?

Wow! Your mic lockers are amazing! Here's my 1/2 inch contribution. I have a very few mics, but I really only use one, a CAD VX2. All I record live is vocal and occasionally acoustic guitar. I've recorded with around 80 singer/songwriters, and I haven't found one yet that didn't sound great through the VX2. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
This year, I'm thinking of doubling my list of mics, all the way up to 2. I'm thinking a Sinsay-modified CV4. Does anybody have any experience with the VX2 to be able to make any kind of comparison with the CV4? Would they be a good contrast or should I look at something else to give another flavor?

And how does it compare to the Grosser? Had them up for a brief A/B last summer. I felt the Lucas had less bottom. Less obvious was something in the top end. I felt that the Lucas had some slightly sparkling quality (very nice!). I remember wondering if that could be because it's using a real tube . Since then I've almost only worked with female singers that preferred having the lo end (at least when recording...) of either Grosser's 47 or my 67, so the CS4 hasn't seen much use yet. Andreas Grosser also commented, after studying the schematics of the CS4, that the CS4 should be more sensitive to high SPL than his U47. He asked me to put them both in front of a loud drum set and compare. Haven't been able to do that yet. Anyway, Grosser's U47 sounds gorgeous. Have had it up against three different vintage U47s. Very very close. Just a tad bid brighter (probably because of a new diaphragm), less boomy/more tight bottom end and perhaps a little more consistent overall. Note that Andreas makes it with a few options re body (standard/heavy brass), transformer (Haufe BV-08 is standard) and choice of capsule (from S Thiersch of course).

How often do you use that RCA44? Thanks John! With a 9 square meter booth none of the mics are used really often. But I love the 44s on trombones and trumpets, and jazz vocalists always love them, though we usually end up using the 47, 67 or one of the darker Gefells. I got three of them because I've found them on eBay at fair prices and just love them also as collector pieces. All three are serviced by Stephen Sank btw. My wife says that it's obvious I'm aiming to get a bigger studio someday...My place is pretty full now and we also have a nice Steinway B (1959) in our house that after a little TLC would be just great for recording. One day, one day...
