Nice! Speaking of pianos, I have one great Craigslist story. I bought this Cable Nelson baby grand on CL for $500! The guy advertised it for $300, but I was so gung-ho, I offered him $500 just to make sure I got it! Attachment Deleted

How do you like that Lucas CS4? And how does it compare to the Grosser? Had them up for a brief A/B last summer. I felt the Lucas had less bottom. Less obvious was something in the top end. I felt that the Lucas had some slightly sparkling quality (very nice!). I remember wondering if that could be because it's using a real tube . Since then I've almost only worked with female singers that preferred having the lo end (at least when recording...) of either Grosser's 47 or my 67, so the CS4 hasn't seen much use yet. Andreas Grosser also commented, after studying the schematics of the CS4, that the CS4 should be more sensitive to high SPL than his U47. He asked me to put them both in front of a loud drum set and compare. Haven't been able to do that yet. Anyway, Grosser's U47 sounds gorgeous. Have had it up against three different vintage U47s. Very very close. Just a tad bid brighter (probably because of a new diaphragm), less boomy/more tight bottom end and perhaps a little more consistent overall. Note that Andreas makes it with a few options re body (standard/heavy brass), transformer (Haufe BV-08 is standard) and choice of capsule (from S Thiersch of course). Thanks for the reply! I'm curious what you mean about the Lucas using a "real tube." Isn't the Grosser a tube as well, or do you have the FET replacement? I'd be curious for that loud drum kit experiment too. I can't imagine why the Lucas would be worse off, unless Grosser's FET is designed to have much higher headroom than a normal tube mic. The Lucas schematic is 95% the same as a vintage U47.

Ok, I'll play. I'm sure I'm missing something as well and I have owned a lot of others that have all been moved on.

Yep my 47 is with Andreas FET device. I have no idea why Grosser guessed (didn't even claim as he asked me to test/compare the two) that the Lucas would be more sensitive. Shouldn't be because the FET device because it's built to act just as the VF14 and is also interchangable with no other alteration needed. I mentioned it only because you asked for the differences, and I told you everything I came to think of. In a few weeks I'll be having a session with many of my mics so if I remember I'll put them in front of a drumset and give all I got, which I'm afraid isn't much.

I appreciate the reply greatly! Now I'm nervous to make the mods I intended on my U47 build, which is basically a Lucas CS-4 because it sounds like the Lucas has less bass than the Grosser, which is already less boomy than the vintage 47. Hmm... decisions.
