i've been using the mackie hr824's for more than a decade, i'm currently building some knockoff proAc 100's, i've heard nothing but great things about them. I believe JK and littlesicily use them.
edit; dough!...jk

JBL LSR4328p and auratone 5c. They squashed everything else I've tried by far. Every artist that comes through the studio comments on them. I find that the midrange can be a little too forgiving, but I'll double check on the auratones. Once i learned the JBLs, i doubt really double check anymore. The translation is great.

I like Klein+Hummel. Still using a pair of O98. Extremely flat and 'true'/honest. Good things sound good. bad things sound worse...great. Also, i use a pair of Cabasse Goelette powered with Adcom amp. Very nice and fine in the mids, quite flat and great stereo image. And as PC-Speaker i have a pair of Tascam VL-X5 that were extraordinary value for what i paid for them new. They got better and better over half a year. Not bad as small budget studio monitors, too.
All depends on the room, your budget, and what you expect them to be.... If i would be forced to buy a pair, it would be probably the KH O120/Neumann. If i had more money - the O-310 or its predecessor O300.(active of course). I i had much more to spend - Geithain RL series, depending on room size, but not the smallest ones... After that - well after that it is esoterics. I would ask my brother. But that will never happen, until i win a big deal in a lottery.... ;-)
Best regards, Martin

Neumann KH120's. Some love them, some hate them.
I like them alot. Mixes translates great. Finds it easy and quick to mix on them. True and flat. Great detail. Honest

Also use KH120s. Completely agree with lolo. Mixes translate beautifully and they're ugly enough to reveal everything. I like to think of them as NS10s with some actual bass and no ear fatigue. Also, I track with a 20-odd year old set of Tannoy System 12 DMTs. Also have a set of KRK V8s - cause they're pretty sounding, for occasional playbacks of final mixes.

Well, I threw a curveball and grabbed a pair of PMC TB1's. I'll update with some thoughts when they show up and I put them through their paces.

The original version of the Mackie 624s.
Brought a huge stack of CDs with very specific things on each to listen for...mind you, I only listened to sub $2k a pair monitors...but, nothing else passed all the tests. Including the bigger 824s. I found out later that the 6's were a newer crossover and tweeter design...so, I have no idea how all that factors into the "mk2" of each. Like did they update the 8 tweeters? I've heard some really bad things about the mk2s...but, I've heard really good things about some monitors I wouldn't be caught dead mixing on, so YMMV.
Benchmark DAC1 feeding 624s. The biggest deal was there was no learning curve. For years I'd have multiple monitors...smallish...largish...check it in the car...check it on the stereo...now, don't bother. If it sounds good on the Mackies it will sound downright killer elsewhere.

I always thought they felt kind of murky. I snagged this pair of PMC's for the price I paid for a single used V8. I expect them to be more open.

1: Focal Twins with Focal Sub6 2: HS50s with HS10 sub.
Pedal on subs...rarely use when mixing.
The Focals work really well in my room and I plan to spend many years with them.

HS-50's. No sub. I use my HD-25 headphones to check my bass balance.

Really like the 120s from Neumann.
I use Adam A7 originals, I wouldn't recommend them, the learning curve on them was very awful for me. Now that I know them I live with them.
Other speakers I've liked are the Genelec 8040s and the smaller Yamaha speakers.

Adam S2X + Sub10 in a well treated room. To me they have a good balance between analytical/revealing and inspirational. You have to struggle some to get a mix to sound good, and I'm rarely dissapointed when I listen to my mixes on other systems, quite the contrary.

You may find that the cms is better for you or that you do not want or need what sub6 offers....crossover control and foot pedal that cuts sub brings mains back to full range etc. I think Focals are the shit that killed elvis though (cowboycoalminers phrase).

That space of yours sounds killer, every time i've heard your stuff, or you mention some piece, my outer ears tweak back lol I'd totally invite myself , but Socal-Stockholm? $3,500?? air fare mehhh..

Using Adam AX7X, had HS 50,s, sold them for the Adams. The midrange is excellent, highs clean enough, lows, a little mushy. If picking a "low end" monitor, I'd get the Focal Solo 6, which are still way over my price range, but I found they resembled the balance of the truly high end monitors I don't even think about owning.

I have M-Audio DSM2's. They were a Digi/M-Audio thing and slated as Adam Killers when released. But, as suspected, people couldn't get past the name and the line failed but not before i got my pair. They are really great speakers with a lot of detail.
I recently added to them an SBX-10 sub (not awesome but doable). I keep the crossover point at 50hz where the tops begin to fall off. It keeps things really clear but the the benefit of thump, when needed (foot pedal).
When people turn their nose when I mention my speakers, I smile.
