He is a very nice dude, indeed. Your thoughts on the zmods? They were nice mics. Maybe a little pristine for me? I liked the 251 the best. Sounded great on acoustic. That's what I thought of my Z67. Really nice mic. Compared it to my MaxMod 67. The ADK sounded hi-fi (in a good way) next to the gritty MKU67. Oh, and +1 on the Lundahls.

I do love the grit of those old Neumann's, but I refuse to buy a TLM 67 just to throw the whole body away and buy a whole new body and electronics. The clip Doc posted of the RMS 269 sounded really good to me. I wouldn't mind having one of those after the z67. The price seems quite good on the RMS as well. Hifi in a good way is welcome by me.

I was looking at the ADK, but I would drive myself nuts with all of the different transformer options. I would need to get in a room with various options of the 67 before I could buy it, but I'm a little OCD. That said, I'd loved to hear it. I wouldn't worry myself with the transformers. Larry told me it was unanimously the Lundahl for the Z67 that was confirmed by the pro's that tested. That's what I am doing and calling it done. I'm getting too old and cranky to kill myself over the choices anymore. Where are you? Maybe I could road trip with it for a day sometime. I'm near D.C. I'm all the way out on Long Island, but I get a lot of performance work throughout the east coast. Maybe if I get something down there. If I do I'll reach out. If you feel like coming up this way let me know.

Honestly, if anyone here went with the Max Mod and doesn't want the TLM67 internals, I'm eager to try them and would be interested in taking them off your hands.

I've been watching for a second internal myself.... Actually, anyone going DIY from a TLM67 to a U87 using the frame and NOT the PCB's, I'd take the top PCB only....

I've seen them come up, but haven't wanted to pay what was being asked for it. Actually someone has a U87ai internal Up on eBay for $799. For all you TLM 67 owners, here is your chance for a U87.

Curious if the eBay internal included the capsule?

Curious if the eBay internal included the capsule? The entire head/capsule is one piece, separate from the electronics.

Wonder what this costs new from Neumann. It's on the exploded diagram on the parts site with a part # for the full assembly.

Ask and ye shall receive. Looks like I'm getting the TLM67 circuit.

I think I'll dip into the ADK world though. I like what I've heard and there are plenty of good reviews.

I have musician friends that live here that are from the island, maybe I'll hitch a ride with them sometime.

I honestly wouldn't mind an 87 AI to switch back and forth from, but the AI is too much for what it is in my opinion. Such is life. If I have the scratch I may try it sometime down the road. I really wish Max would just make a dang mic.

So I received my TLM 67 electronics and dropped it into my U87ai. I only did a quick operatic take, but my initial impression is it sounds a bit more like a mellow and transformerless U87 than a U67. It's top end is a bit more mellow and there is a bit of a larger mid push than the U87ai. The U87ai has a saturation element that the TLM67 does not, despite the tube emulation circuit. I honestly think you could use either in the same situations and not go wrong. I do understand why people get aggravated about this being Neumann's current "67" offering. I'll comment more when I've sang more than just opera through it. Also, once I receive my RMS 269 I'll get my wife into the studio to try each on a couple of different styles. So far my U87ai is in the lead on her voice, although I haven't tried her on the BLUE Stage II with the B0 yet. Either way, her voice is also very full frequecied like mine, but it will provide a whole different context for me to judge the sound of the microphone....and her voice is actually a little louder than mine. ;-P

See the other thread. If you're looking for a similar neumann sound as the 87, but with less edge, the 269 does it. This gal could slice through metal with her voice. Super powerful, and had an edge to it, and the 269 was an excellent call.

For a thread on U67's, I'm a bit surprised at the minimal chatter surrounding the new STAM offering, and the fact that it's on sale this month...
I've never used anything STAM, so I cannot comment on track record. I know that his delivery has sometimes not been as fast as folks have liked...but those who use his stuff have seemed to like it.
SO? Is the STAM U67 not on your radar?
I feel as though there's no "defacto" U67 out there other than an original. Compared to the U47, where many will direct you to Flea or Wunder and be done with it... Sooo, shouldn't we be stoked for a "like for like" U67 clone?
Forgive me if I missed some of this in the last 26 pages; I've browsed, but didn't really catch it if it was discussed.
Cheers!

No ones really heard the STAM so it’s guesswork at this point.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't considering putting a couple hundo down on a years wait for a chance at a great mic. I like my SA2A and liked the SA4000, but I haven't heard much about his line of mics. The thing that has me confuddled, though, is all the talk of getting an accurate transformer wind for the MKU67, but Stam goes and put's (what I assume to be) an off-the-shelf Cinemag transformer in the mic. I wonder if this will end up being more in line with ADK's philosophy of getting most of the tone from the capsule. But then again, he said he's got the negative feedback circuit, which was used by Neumann to tame an overly bright capsule? I'm kinda talking out my ass at this point. Someone with more knowledge than me should probably step in.

Part of me wonders if he'll eventually go with the AMI reproduction transformer and bump the price up.
I'd still be in, though.

No one will know until the Stam is seen and heard. Based on the Stam 47 comments, it won't be an exact 67, but may voice somewhat like one. Which all the others do too. Only the real thing and the Max insert give you the actual Neumann capsule, which is the biggest piece IMO. There are a number of aftermarket transformers attempting to match the unavailable Neumann transformer, and that's the one thing 'wrong' with any of the otherwise exact clones, be they Max's or people's DIY efforts, etc etc. There must be 3-4 other BV12 type transformers you could hack into a Max mod, see if you got it more like what you want. All the various qualities seem to exist across all the various types, just not all in one of them! The other products I'm aware of don't attempt the actual 67 circuit.
I'm personally not interested in participating in anything with the sales methods and delivery times Stam operates under. I know the potential downsides of that all too well as someone who does custom work, and have seen a lot of situations go wrong for others trying to get custom work or modifications delivered. It's a bit of a faith based system, operated large scale, masquerading as a small company.....that needs all some funding up front...to go into development and acquisitions....the audio world is littered with the carcasses of much smaller startups who took money for theoretical product based on a single prototype....so far he's delivered which is a notch in his favor, but it only takes one going wrong for the party to be over. I don't like the risk assessment, and I've lived a lot of risky audio deals, and will continue to do so. YMMV.....
