I can confirm this Vincent. My U67 has a touch more top end than the MK67...it is sporting an Amperex Bugle boy which has a touch more sparkle in top though. I’m suspecting it is the ioaudio BV12 transformer that is responsible for this darker top. So far, it’s nothing a little hi-shelf can’t remedy.

I agree. Just a little brighter than I'd expect from a U67. In fact I really haven't heard a Stam product that sounded bad.

I wonder if he’s doing the whole tertiary windings/feedback/de-emphasis U67 thing or just trying to voice the mic like a 67 (which is what pretty much all U67 clones besides the MK67 do).

Yeah, I've debated sending my kit to Shannon for a little EQ tweak, but I've been caught up chasing my M49... or rather my FLEA 49 which I'll most likely order with a k47 and an AC701k..... sorry. Back to the U67. Actually, I find if I get a little closer to the MK U67 I get a more usable recording. It can get a little muddy from 2ft. I just have to really watch my gain when I do that. When I do that I do get that sound from the old Sergio Franchi records. I just need to pair it with a cleaner preamp and add a little EQ shelf up top. Also, if you look at the frequency response charts for the U67 you can see a 1db dip around 350 hz. I add a 1db dip there and it helps too. Maybe the kit is missing that dip.

Yes, it's probably something about the Neumann proprietary process for the feedback in the windings. Max should really do another version for people that like a more open mic.

I don't know much about it but it is seeming to me that transformer winding is a bit of a dark art...a lot like capsule tensioning.

Oliver's transformer is called the closest by many, the example I heard is thinner sounding than a Neumann. Max swears his is exact, whatever that means. Reports suggest many of his are, some aren't. I think you gotta just do a crappier job on the feedback winding so it doesn't pass so many highs. The new stuff is 'too good', like a Jensen, and that translates to less highs. The bottom of the Max sounds closer to me than the AMI.
There are transformer guru's.....and no one wants to pay what they charge.....and they specialize.....not good for every job.

I was looking for a mic to tame harsh sources but keep a sense of realism, detail and size and one that takes EQ well. My MK67 delivers that stuff in spades so I wouldn't want it changed, personally.

A bit off-topic but I'll never understand why mic manufactures use pop shields on their demo videos.

I guess Oliver Archut was that guy, RIP. Your favourite mic uses Cinemag. So do all the Bock's. The extended lowend is their signature. It's surprising they never get the acclaim of other boutique manufacturers. Attachments:

Stam says on Facebook that he's using the original circuit, negative feedback and all. I might have to bite the bullet and do the waiting...

I'd snag that IO 67 if I was flush.

I want to refer my friend to Max's site, so he can read about the mod. He has a TLM 67 now. I can't seem to find any links to the MK U47 or ioqudio.

There isn't a site, just a long GS thread, along with whatever historical DIY pages still exist at GroupDIY. Max has moved an amazing amount of product for someone without an official web presence. I don't think I've seen reference to a FB page at all. Years ago he was about to release a 500 series Pultec and had pictures of 25+ units that were mostly through the build process. There was never an official release and those all went somewhere. That may not sound like many, but I can think of examples of good new products that struggled to move that many units with advertising and good reviews.

That's strange, thanks EmRR. So, if one wanted to buy the IO kit, how wold you do that?

you email him from the contact in the GS thread. He takes your paypal payment and ships from Austria. It smells like smoke....cause I guess he smokes.....so they are 'pre-conditioned' just like an old one.
