I took another quick listen to the files today. When listening to the pop tracks I found that the Slate FG67 sounds very close to the Advanced Audio CM67SE in standard mode, and the Slate FG269 sounds close to the MK U67 in bright mode. I reaffirmed that the MK U67 in standard mode is beefier than the CM67VE in Vintage mode. I still maintain they are quite close. How hard are you pushing these capsules?

I'm an opera singer and when I let it rip I can sing at about 120-130 decibels. Mics are usually 18-24 inches away. With the pop stuff, definitely not as much. 8 inches away and not nearly as loud.

If anyone is interested in hearing the Advanced Audio CM67se in it's standard, bright, modded U67 mode, just check out my "Granada" live in the studio video.
**Note: I used a low pass filter at 10KH to remove little of the top end. Just my preference for my voice on this mic.

Vincent R., a couple of observations... first of all, your high c is delightful but your a and b-bemolle are just delicious!! And the lungs on you? holy scallopini!! Now with regards to the mic. What's causing the nasal 'honk' ion the sound? Your breathing seems to flow very freely so I doubt it's in your vocal sound. But the recording has a little bit of that choked microphone quality to it. I'm sure it's a great mic, but I would like to hear you sing into a real 251 or the best damned clone you can get your hands on. Even hearing you on a C12 or M49 would be really nice!

Vincent, everything Ward said plus, you need a bigger room! Watch your gain, you voice has so much that on the Stax ESL I heard some slight quick overloads! I think a nice M49 with an M7 would be perfect! But that voice deserves real room sound not reverb! Also you need some great Monitors, ATC, Volt B&W or Quad ESL mids will come close to doing it justice!

ragan Thanks. I started my career in theater, but started my recording career as a studio vocalist. I did a lot of recordings for new musicals, etc. I also have a decent pop sound that I've used for a while too. I'm the operatic tenor opposite Christopher Lee on both his "Charlemagne" albums. Ward Thanks. My C has come a long way. It's usually my Bb thanks knocks everyone out. lol. I could have gotten that sound in the high C, but I loved this take as a whole performance and decided not to do any additional takes. I'm not really sure what the honk is. Feel free to take a listen to the full mic test from this video, see below. I've tried a lot of mics, but not a real C12, 251, or M49. I did try Korby versions of these. The C12 & 251 thinned my voice a little bit in a way I didn't like. Although the 251 was really nice. I have Advanced Audio's CM251 here and it's my go to for female vocals. Frankly, my U87ai does really well on my voice. I've often wondered if picking up a vintage U87 would do the trick I'm looking for. I've just been looking for something a little warmer. I tried a Peluso 2247SE (which I own) and a Wagner U47, but there is a compression thing in the top end of my voice that doesn't work, despite how rich my middle voice sounds. The Korby head I tried for the M49 style was a custom head. I felt it colored my voice, but I loved the top end and natural sound. I went back and forth about the 67 and the 49. I chose the 67 after finding a handful of my favorite tenors and baritones had all recorded on it, including one of my idols Sergio Franchi. My 67s here only need a little 1.5 db shelf, and a small boost at 3.2kh to really give me what I'm looking for. Once I'm feeling better I'll make some clips for everyone, or even another video with clips of them. ericn thanks. I believe the overloads you are hearing are tape saturation, not mic overloads due to gain. It's common and I hear that kind of overloads in Sergio Franchi's recordings and Julie Andrews and a number of old school legit voices. I totally agree about the room. My room isn't horrible, but real reverb in a real room is best. When I recorded my album I recorded it at the national opera center in NYC. That room was amazing. I've also done recordings in large churches in NYC. The room makes a huge difference. Thanks for the tip about monitoring. I'm working with some Event 20/20s now and a pair of M-Audio V40s. Not the greatest set up, but switching between them I can get a good sound. I'll look into your recommendations. Here's the shoot out:

I'm loving this mic more the more I use it. I just point it at stuff and go "oh damn, that's it right there". I've never had a mic like it. Takes the idea of "taking EQ" to a new level. I guess that's kind of the U67s thing. You can do whatever the hell you want with it EQ wise and it just sounds so warm and alive and lovely. Count me a huge fan. I've been using this mic for a week and all I can say is I get it. This is an incredible microphone. I highly recommend the MK U67 if you have the funds for it.

I somehow keep liking it more and more. I wish I would have bought it years ago. Well, ok, it didn't exist years ago, but you know what I mean. I want to get another while we've still got Max around. These things won't be available forever.

I need another mic like a hole in the head but, honestly, with all the great words here and the enthusiasm my customers who are retubing them, I'm sooooo tempted to pick one up. I usually wait a couple years with any gear to see if the hype dies down but I'm hearing great things about these from people who don't even participate in forums. And, like you said, they may not be around forever. Wouldn't be the first time I seriously missed the boat by waiting...

Not me, I need a U67. My first Blackspade was a dead ringer for the M49, so I got used to that sound, and then I had a real M-49 to try in my high end mic shootout, but the U67 is a much better fit for my vocals.

Remember like the 47 there are to big flavors of M49 M7 and k47. The blackspade with Thirsch is close very much in the ballpark. But that last 10% is a big sonic step! The AC701 is the only tube that we can find in 3 of the most wanted LDC's (M49, Elam251, M269) ! You don't know you need one till you use one! I have seen guys who want one of the others try to buy M49's for insane amounts when somebody puts a 49 in front of them, just like when Classical guys here a Mic feed of of M50's when those guys can't find 50's they buy 49's!

I would spend days trying to find the pre! Do I want clean and fast? do I want Neve big? Do I go Hardy as a compromise? What kind of clean? That would be fun!

I've heard great things about the Flea 49. Have you ever used one? I'll probably start with an economical version like Advanced Audio. It will give me an idea of if it's really my aesthetic before I invest in something bigger.

Are you in a position to rent an in good nick, real M49 Vincent? Would save yourself the price of the knock off and stop any guessing; of course the problems will start if it shows itself to be the duck's.......
Rationalise that dilemma by saying to yourself, 1. You only live once 2. Apart from your significant other It's your life's passion 3. I have the talent ( no doubt about that) $. Other blokes smoke cigarettes and drink a dozen beer a night etc, etc.
Then, good luck finding one in top order.
Then prepare to rebuild your room to an acoustic worthy of the mic.
It's enough to make you smoke cigarettes and drink a dozen beer a night...
It was easier being totally unaware!
Cheers, Ross

Maybe just find a studio with a good room, pre amps and a Neumann M49 mic and book a few hours. Like Winetree. But the drive might be a little prohibitive.
