Hi Tony. I wanted the WA76 mostly for tracking vocals. I currently have two Warm TB12's, and I'm very happy with them. For the price, I would have liked a solid 1176 clone, but the flimsy-feeling radio buttons just don't appeal to me, even if one wasn't immediately broken out of the box. I would also eventually like to replace my Drawmer 1960 for both compressor and bass DI duties. As for the rest of it, I was just thinking aloud. The Aurora Audio GTC2 is a stereo compressor with FET and opto on both sides. The GTQC channel strip also has an FET/opto compressor as well as fairly comprehensive eq in a 19" single rack unit. The Serpent Splice Mk II, has all the other stuff. That's why I said I'd like to see a merger of the two, the features of the Splice with the FET/opto of the GTC2. I don't really expect this to happen, but I'd love to see it. As it is, I may end up with either the GTQC or the Splice. Either option is a heck of a lot more money than the WA76, so I'm going to have to ruminate on them a while longer. Well, just to let you know, price nor component quality is assurance of a trustworthy product. I've posted several times about my experience with Aurora - and it was this exact model - the GTQC. I got it, it worked for about a week (it sounded fantastic btw) and then conked out. I sent it in, they sent it back. Still broken. Sent it in, they sent it back. Stillllll broken. Sent it in a third time and it finally came back fixed. All of my shipping to them was on MY dime and this was over a month and a half (maybe more) span and communication was an absolute joke...Once it was fixed, I sold it. Awesome sounding piece, but my experience was not good. I can put up with a lot of things...Hey - things break - I TOTALLY understand...but bad customer service is not one of them. Bryce seems very attentive and hey - it's a $600 box. I'm sure cost saving measures were employed. I appreciate him bringing this kind of product to market at this price... John, it's actually your customer service issue that has prevented me from buying the GTQC. It seems like it would be absolutely perfect for my needs, a high-end pre with eq and two linkable flavors of compression, wow! Unfortunately, as far as I know there isn't a Canadian distributor or dealer, so if I ran into problems like you did, I would be doubly screwed.

Well - let me be the first to say...every company has the occasional screw up...and I really don't want to discourage you from trying the unit. It's excellent. My experience could have totally been an isolated one. I have bought gear that other people totally panned or had problems with and I never had a single problem. So - maybe you should talk to a dealer and see what their return policy is. I thought the Aurora GTQC (even though Geoff has refused to post on this board, largely because of me sharing the experience) sounded really, really good. When it was working.
I don't know what the best avenue for situations like this is...do you just not share your experience? You would think this would be the perfect opportunity for a manufacturer to be involved on a board and come in and say something like, "John - I'm so sorry about your experience...I'm here to stand by my product and will answer any questions and alleviate any concerns. blah, blah blah..." THAT kind of customer service - instead of getting your feelings hurt (over your product not working) would sell units like hot cakes. In my opinion. But I could be wrong.
BTW - I appreciate the manufacturers that are here - Bryce has been present and polite and I feel like he, and all of the others on here (and the ones that participate like that on other forums) are the good guys.

@jk true your comment was a digression but complete customer service is part off the experience.
I trust Warm's product's partly cus of the support i have received directly from Bryce. I have ordered 2 wa76's cus of that earned trust and i have 2 tb12's too
I honestly had a small problem with one of the tb12's and emailed bryce: he diagnosed in his response told me to pop the top and what to check and i was up and running
afterward's he joked and said i just told you to do what i would have done so why ship it to texas !
I got a feeling i will end up with everything warm audio produces and i can't wait for the wa76's to show up another example i asked bryce about the stereo link and he knows i do diy so he told me about the hairball kit and if you don't diy he told me about the zenn mod too. I can't ask for better products or service.
Bring it on Bryce!

Gotcha, I was referring to the fet/opto combo more than anything else, haven't tried aurora, but a moderator over at the purple site who I do not trust a bit, helped develop it, and any opto that's not using a t4b is a fail imv(don't believe A uses it) Regardless, squeezing fet into a box with an opto seems a compromise, kinda like an SUV... It probably does neither well, I'd rather have a truck and an AC cobra if you know what I mean..., I'm just speculating on that combo unit, so add a grain of salt 8) Tony, I agree, usually a combination unit is not going to be as good as the best individual units. But I think Evan Tanner has a good reputation as a Neve guy, and I've never read anything but glowing reviews about his preamps, compressors, and channel strips. But there have been negative reports about customer service, as from Monsieur Kennedy. That's interesting about the Gearslutz moderator helping to develop it, I didn't know that. Which moderator was it? If you don't want to say here for some reason, please PM me, you really have me curious. Tony Belmont...mehhh btw, I don't doubt the sound quality of Bryce's stuff, mainly because Anton(henge) knows his shit, and I trust him 8)

Thanks for the info, Tony. I don't doubt the quality of Bryce's stuff either, I'm the happy owner of two TB12's.

BTW, the GTQC is mono, not stereo... Yes, that's all I would need. But it is linkable to a second one, if required. Unfortunately, the fact that there is no place in Canada to get one kills it for me.

I don't have any singers coming in the next few days, but I'm going to see if I can find the time this weekend to test the WA76 with my (very) crappy voice. I also want to see if the WA76 with one of the TB12's can replace my Drawmer 1960 as a bass direct-in, which the Drawmer excels at IMO. Then I'll decide if I want to return it or just exchange it for a new one.

Just Got my unit today. Very excited. Just looking on the back of the unit and even though I know the country of Origin of these, does anybody else think it is strange that it is not mentioned? Why would you mention a place of Manufacture for a specific part but not the whole unit? Anyways looking forward to putting it through some paces this week.

Well because here in America, we have a huge hang up on things built in China and not in America. Even though the Chinese are better than use at nearly everything they put their hand to and are harder workers and better educated. Their economy is stronger and getting stronger yet ours is weak and wishy washy. But by God we love to wave a flag and talk about buying American made stuff. If I was selling something in America, I would want to advertise the fact that American made parts were used as well. Can't blame him IMO.

Just took a close look at the back panel of my WA76. Could this be the serial number? I preordered mine from Warren at Zen Audio. Attachments:

So far so good with mine. Only used it once, on vocal tracking, I've been away from my studio. Behaves like an 1176. It's built lighter and much less substantial than the UREIs, but it sounds fine and the price is phenomenal.

I really like the wa76. I've used countless urei and ua revisions as well as use the drip rev d often and the wa76 definitely hangs with them in sonic capabilities as far as filling up tracks in a mix or for tracking vox and everything regarding the bass. Awesome compressor. As a matter of fact I just won a little prize for my review of the wa76 and although I shower it with praise (which is rare for me to do) I don't regret a word.

I'll hopefully have mine in a couple of weeks.
a quick question for you guys tracking with 1176's and opto's. Do you normally use the 1176 before the opto in tracking vox?
