the stereo link board just sums the audio inputs of both sides and averages them so both compressors receive the same signal at their sidechain.

Ahh. Thanks for clearing that up. Missed it by a mile.

Indeed you can (and should) use an 1176 stereo pair or something similar as a brick-wall limiter on the mix buss. Because brick wall limiting really changes the dynamic and balance of a mix; not something you want to keave to the mastering engineer on his own! You won't recognize your mixes!!

I got the link to the kit from Bryce so I am sure it works fine and just further confirms the legitimate lineage of the wa76 build: it is a 76: period: buy 1,2 what ever : don't limit your compression: save money , be happy !!

Poop. Two days ago the price & Long & McQuade was $649. Today I decided I was going to try ordering one but the price has now been bumped to $699. Oh well. I'll just continue with my original plan for the 1176 vibe.

Hmmm. Debating between this and the Don's Blue stripe. I guess I'll have to download the comparison. You know it, I and everybody else knows it - get both! Joke aside, if the WA76 is more towards a rev D or later I think you'll want both eventually. When I compared my Purple and the U76 I felt they are a little different and both earn a place in the rack. The U76 a bit more dirty and colored, and...noisier... Could be that the WA is a bit more versatile, not? Spot on. But I've been toying with the idea of a revA lately. Decissions... Any drum shootout around?

As soon as I get all my equipment in place Im going to run an AEA R84 as a mono Drum Mic through a Capi VP28 into the WA76. Im expecting pure magic. Anyone want to lend me their Sta-Level to follow the WA76 in that chain?

Is he willing to do one?
I can run it through the Lindell but in the last AB I did, the RevD clone was slightly better. Murdered the CLA plugin, though.
I'm sure the Warm is up to the clone. In that case, the Lindell will be on the classified section anytime soon.

Man, if Hairball doesn't get more kits soon, I might go with a pair of these.

For the full kit, yes, but I would buy the partial Hairball kits because I have enough spare parts from other builds to build a few 1176 for more like 300$ a piece.
Also, the Hairball kits have a few pieces that are of better quality, but probably not any different sonic character.

Welcome Bryce! I've got two TB12's, and I'm looking forward to trying the WA76. Can we expect an opto-based compressor in the not-to-distant future? Thanks for the welcome ) No plans for an opto-compressor at this point, it would be cool though some day... Hi Bryce, I've just registered on this board especially to tell you that I would absolutely buy a LA-2A style compressor from you, and I would even pay you up front! Since you have already tackled the 1176, it makes perfect sense to go for a LA-2A since so many people use these two compressors in tandem, either 1176 > LA-2A or LA-2A > 1176. It would be interesting to hear what others think about this. I would also be interested in a Neve 73 type pre, and put me down for a quality EQ (or two) while you are at it The way I see it, you are building up a great name for yourself and you need to have all the bases covered. As brand awareness develops, more people will be turning to you for the classics. I think WA has a great future if you keep on producing the goods.

So far so great! What great sounding compressor. Ok, what's the verdict now that these are getting into people's hands? Some thought the sound files were a bit "pumpy" compared to some/most of the other 1176 variants. Any thoughts on that? Thanks, Geoff

All in how you set it Geoff. The input is hotter than the UA 76's. That is to say you can't really crank a lot on it like the UA's. Small adjustment make more impact so it could be that folks are so used to the UA's, there just not setting it properly. Plus a VU meter on any 76's has always been just for a quick reference IMO. Again folks may be used to pulling 7 to 10 db of reduction for the sweet spot on other 76's but I found on these WA's that less is needed on the meter to find the sweet spot with the ears. Same can be said for the old Urei's. Close your eyes and use your ears type thing, you know? All that said, it isn't a UA model and doesn't react like one so it takes some getting used to. BUT, it sounds better to me when properly dialed in. It's a rock box for sure. I love it. Instant vibe.

I've thrown vox, snare, kick, mono synth and bass at it and it passed with flying colours. Killer value imo. I'm seriously considering getting another for stereo sources.
