Since all stock is about to dry up, gave in and got a pair of the Oktava variant preamp, that pretty much no one seems to have bought and reported on in the decade+ they've been out there. Sounds really "the same" and solves the noise problems of the pad and HPF options. This probably shoulda been the stock supplied preamp! Hey Doug! If ya don't mind me asking' - how much did those run ya and where did ya buy em? Thx. bp oktava-shop, Germany. They don't communicate and seem to be running out of Oktava stock fast. Most dealers don't even carry these.

PSSL had a coupon for $100 off anything $199 or more and they had a AKG 460 with CK61 for $209 so snagged that for $109. I've got a buddy who borrows mine so if it shows up and work alright I'll likely give it to him as a 40th birthday present.

I have been looking at these forever and keep wondering if I should buy a pair. No real sonic difference?

It's still a 2 transistor circuit but the options are in the active circuit instead of between the capsule and the circuit.

Got a screamin' deal on an incomplete/damaged Hairball Elements Gold preamp (Hardy 990). The DI section build had been borked, easy fix. Sounds great.

So much of what got out of Russia can be blamed squarely at the feet of the guys at Harris Broadcasting, the original US importer. The First demos we got should never have passed QC. It was all about price point and we said no at the time. I was always told by our in house and later Smart Tech Ruskie all the Russian mics sucked and there were some interesting stories about guys being sent West to buy some classic mics and bring back a bunch of crap that came with tape decks. As time went on the Octavia’s seam to have improved. Those first ones I literally put a 57 on Mitch’s guitar because some thing was so wrong, the 57 felt like I found a KM84 that day compared to the Octavia, then I put up a Sony C35.

Those are one of the few preamps I actually miss. And I have a Hardy M-2 that replaced them. They aren't as big or muscular - they are similar in sound but a bit sweeter. Just great.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that at some point Oktava implemented the Joly mods into their preamps (probably around the time he got out of the game) I wonder if that’s true with the ones you bought.

The dude in that video is solid. He runs Microphone Boutique which imports a bunch of very cool Russian mics (many made/designed by a dude who consulted Soyuz when they got rolling). Recommend checking them out.

Got my final Zeiss Classic for the year (I swear): an 18mm f/3.5 ZE. Should work well on my gimbal. Planning to use it this weekend on a wedding shoot in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Interesting Ehren! Fascinating video about the ribbon design on VK. How did you run across these? I've never heard of them before. Video sounded a little more SSSYYY than I'd expect from a ribbon, but I'm guessing he was using the asymmetrical version on the voice side. Really looking forward to your thoughts when you get it. Beautiful design and sound from what I can tell. Cheers, bp

I've been going down the mic rabbit hole this week and somehow the internet brought them to my attention : ) Seems like he's put some real thought into the design. I've been after a ribbon with a little extra top end for mando, acoustic, drums, etc. We'll see how this one sounds. Also interested in the Mesanovic and Extinct mics. I'm continually surprised by how many options we have, and they just keep coming. It's an amazing time for gear (if a little financially treacherous). I'll report back!

Got my pair of Miad LCPQ 4040 Discrete 4 Band Inductor EQs. Wow. These things shine on everything I've tried them on. Box tone itself is gorgeous. EQ is super intuitive and musical. Sold my Curve Bender after a few days of using the Miads.

When I looked these up after seeing your post I ended up on the founder’s LinkedIn page. Guy has chemistry background specifically in metals and did a stint at Rayovac doing some manufacturing stuff as well UW b school and Chem degrees. So he know his stuff.
