The the '80's, we went through what I imagine is similar to a STA infatuation at Sandy Pearlman's Alpha and Omega studios with the Aphex Compellor. It just seemed like free gain reduction with no drawbacks. After a while, we went back to just catching 3-5 dB peaks with an 1176 or a dbx 160 and further processing at mix.

HA! I've still got a compeller and remember doing the same. I haven't brought myself to be able to get rid of it yet.

Best advice I ever received: Record finished tracks. 100% agreed. Waiting for "something better" likely means "something better" will never come. And to those that lament the "sound" of older records, I'd argue that one of the biggest differences between those older records and a lot of modern records is the delay of decisions. Have some balls and stop with the option paralysis.

Hey Doug - are you one to leave tube gear on all the time? Oh hell no. I think that's an incredibly stupid idea.

I've been guilty of option paralysis myself, but one of the best decisions I ever made was to limit myself to choice pieces of super useful gear (and plugins) and get back to worrying more about art.

And to add to this train of thought, I'm watching Neil Young Heart of Gold on Netflix right now and there is a guy on stage with a house broom mic'ed up. Awesome. How long before somebody asks for "broom" samples?
If you want broom, fucking record it...

I don't think the STA is a passing fad - MU comps have been in use since the late 50's, the Beatles, Sinatra etc all used MU comp's. I feel more like Sinatra tracking through the STA than Bon Jovi :-) I remember the Aphex well (opps showing my age again) and the STA is nothing like it, the GR is definitely not for "free" like an Aphex, it reminds me more of a vintage LA2A where you have to be careful not to hit it too hard otherwise is can get a bit too fluffy. I'm way preferring it when I'm doing 5-7dB GR and more later in the mix. The point to me about a STA (or to a lesser degree Vintage LA2A) is the way it enhances a vocal performance, it seems to adapt to the style in an organic way, it brings up the detail on a softer slower track and let's you lean against it making you phrase better, or if I'm doing a upper register "Shadows in the rain" type of tune it can take the red hot tip of the flame that style of singing produces and turn it into something less strident but still really emotional before it hits your A/D. I think it's the effect of having no semi conductors in the path just a heap of tubes and Xformers .... it completely lies through it's teeth of course .... that's the fun bit :-)

Remember though that mu comps were not in use basically from 1970 to the year 2000. In that era a $300 stalevel was a very expensive stalevel. I was still buying them for $300 on eBay up to about 2004.

90% of the hype around the Sta Level is due to John Kennedy buying and selling and buying it again over and over. :-D (And 95% of statistics on the internet are completely fictitious...)

Bet you wish you bought a few of those, although I'm told the Gates STA level does have a different tone to the Retro re-issue.

You would think i would get a fvcking free one, wouldn't you? They won't even bother advertising here. And btw - that has nothing to do with me not having one anymore...in fact, this thread is giving me major gas to get another one.

I think I've had 3...or it might be 4...I think I sold the first one because I was stupid...second because I needed money...third because I wanted the RS124 and I'm not independently wealthy enough (I don't have a real job) to own both.

Anyone with an RS124 has no need of a STA. Clearly. And @smallbutfine is right. You drove up the prices Johnkenn !!

I can't afford it but I'd love to add a Chandler RS124.
Plus a CL1A, original 1176 and a Teletronix LA2A.
Don't start me on pre's :-)
I must keep working on writing that hit song .... does that still pay the bills?

So, I could have a rack loaded with both and use every one of them.

And those Aphex Compellors that were $1250 new ($3000 in 2016 dollars) can be had for $150 - $250 any day of the week. Some of the next magical bargains, I'm sure. VINTAGE NINETIES!! LOL

Even the Exciters and one knob comps!

Revival! Years later.. Compress vocals on the way in or not? It's very rare that I track a vocal without compression. Most singers have a lot going on dynamically, sometimes based on the tune, some based on the type of words, and I usually want to get some sort of evening out happening. I'm not afraid to put 2 comps in series if the singer has big jumps. Or track with a single compressor and then compress again ITB while mixing. In general I reach for compressors more that anything.
