I love it, let the music do the talking, and as expected.. friggin awesome! you want versatility, i got yer versatility right here!!! track 3 with the High z and pad is totally ready for a populated mix w/no compression at all, vibey like an old blues record. Track 1 vs 3, good luck trying to get that amount of sonic swing out of another pre, my vp28's are like this, i'm gonna have to get one of these to find out for myself the differences between the 2, great job Jeff, that player is amazing btw.
cant wait to hear JK's tracks 8)

Thx Tony. Randy is amazing for sure. Check him at allcredits.com. He has some good ones. Also Grammy nominated and an all around great guy. He's also a member here.
The files with JK are short and already up. Skim back a few posts and you will find the link.

Sound great... I like the No-Hiz_No-Pad best because it tames the high end slightly, pre sounds great but again would like to hear the instrument in person to tell what the pre's are doing or not doing so to say.
96K slightly better and more natural(less compressed clipped frequency sounding) to me.

So, I have just uploaded some Heider FD312 clips we captured of Whitney Duncan and Clint Lagerberg at Clint's Mill Road Studio on Nov 1st. Whit was sangin' and Clint was on elec gtr. The track "Skinny Dippin" is an older song that Whitney wrote a few years back. I recall her performing it when she was on Nashville Star back in 2007. We have some killer vid for this session that was captured and is being edited together by Rob and Tom at Rack-N-Roll Audio. Hopefully that will be finished soon. In the meantime.....here are the raw wav files. Signal chains are as follows: Whitney->my vintage Telefunken 251->Heider FD312 (HiZ in, no pad)->Apogee Symphony Clint->Duesenberg Fullerton->3rd Power Dream Weaver (American side/blonde)->3rd Power Switchback 1x12 cab (Celestion gold)->Miktek PM10->Heider FD312 (HiZ and Pad in, preamp @ 12 o'clock, fader @ -4dB)->Apogee Symphony Whitney-Duncan-Heider-Session_VOCAL-48KWhitney-Duncan-Heider-Session_GUITAR-48KWhitney-Duncan-Heider-Session_STEREO-48KLet me know what you think! Cheers, Jeff

I have been demoing the Heiders they are very nice. They are similar to the others in the CAPI line but a flavor of their own. Its a marriage in between 312 and a 1073. Kind of, hard to place it but it is very nice! Need more cash and racks.
Now back to finishing a mix for a client and then I have 4 more of the new ML kits to build!

I assume these are fixed gain like the real ones I used were?

so if i'm to understand correctly, the big differences between an actual Heider, and the CAPI is, a mic/line and High Z switch, and a second stage output and attenuator, that gives the almost mandatory attenuation control that is needed to drive the input stage hard, most necessary when you DONT have an actual API console(output fader)...right?
edit; not to mention the extra goodness of a second lieber 2520 red dot, and another transformer for the magic goo, more is more style.

Jeff, I really, really love the Heider on Acoustics! I posted a song in the "What Are You Working On Forum" that I used the Heider with a Miktek C5 as the Mid and the VP28 with a cheap ribbon as the side...Love how it turned out!

Interesting. The deMedio consoles I used working at Wally Heider's in San Francisco during the early 1970s were both fixed gain with mike pads. When I asked about why, I was told that both Frank and Wally preferred the sound of fixed gain preamps in addition to using passive rather than active combining.

If you mean output gain... if the pre was in a console, then that makes perfect sense, the fader on the console is what is represented by the second stage of Jeff's Heider pre... Was the board you used some sort of passive summing thing? Can you tell us a bit about the configuration if you remember? this stuff is so interesting to me Thanx T

This describes it pretty well although the ownership facts are completely wrong. Filmways was Wally's backer from the beginning and they simply closed it down and moved all the gear to LA. The building has been occupied by a number of different people since then but it never returned to being what it had been. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wally_Heider_StudiosThe consoles were built before Frank started using API amplifiers. There was an outboard API 550 or 550A normalled into each console channel. All tube consoles used passive summing with cascaded line stages combining groups of inputs. I think the Heider consoles combined groups of four inputs. The idea is to never let the signal level go below the level it entered the console at. I should call Harry Sitam and ask. Harry was the very first person I met in San Francisco. I'd been picked up at the airport by a friend from Detroit in a Heider truck. What an introduction to a studio and a city!

So who else has bought these? If you haven't do yourself a favor and get yourself a nice Christmas gift from CAPI. They are sounding great on everything.

We are launching a Heider FD312 ad campaign starting in next months TapeOp. Adam Kagan has a pair of them and is doing a review as well. Not sure what issue that will print in. These testimonials will be used but are not in the first ad. Just for fun, here are what some of the early users are reporting. "The Heider is an instant classic. It brings a killer character to everything I plug into it." - F. Reid Shippen "I'm not sure what is different about this pre....maybe its the two output transformers but it makes things sound like records I love." - Bill Reynolds, Band of Horses "I used the Heider in a vocal chain shootout and it was instantly the clear winner....full and exciting sounding!" - Ben Fowler "When it comes to recording drums, the Heider FD312 is simply stellar. It's punchy as hell with tons of character leaving nothing to be desired." - Russ Long
