I thought they both sounded good in different ways that have been thoroughly described already. I did have favorites on different sources, too. I could see both of these mics being very useful.

Any update on this one from Mark? Was the VL37 working properly? I liked the Royer clips better here, but heard some comparison on GS, it was a Classical guitar track, where the Samar sounded more natural and the Royer was sounding "polished"/"hyped" in comparison. I guess I´ll have to try for myself to find out......

Mark said that the one I had for demo, had a twisted/offset ribbon.

Glad to know that. I was certain something wasn't right, the one I heard at AES was completely different than the files here.

Here is the picture of the right side view of the ribbon I got back from Svart: Here is left side view: Usually, that happens with very hard impact during shipping. And here is how the ribbon leaves the factory: Best, M

Get that guy a new one ASAP, this was a great shootout, except for the small matter of the mic being damaged ;-)

Looking forward to the redo, I bet there will be a very different result.

Must be a VERY hard/long drop given your shipping boxes I've seen. Wow.

Again...I liked the broken ribbon better than the 121...lol Actually, I took a second listen, this time with matched levels and I think the Samar sounds more natural and true to the source, the royer is emphasizing the mid band (based on the experience with my own 121), which is sometimes a good thing (rock´n´roll baby) I´ll probably pull the trigger for a pair of Samars, have to sell some shit first though. I feel I might enjoy them on OH & acoustic stuff ...

Again...I liked the broken ribbon better than the 121...lol But but but . . . the guy who recorded the Locomotive Audio session for mixing made the R121 sound just like a Shure SM57!
