The values are based around the original REDD 47, which only had +36, +40, and +46 settings. Below + 36 the steps are 4dB increments. Above +46 they're in 2dB increments.
*edit* I meant to say above 50 they're in 2dB increments, sorry. But now you know where that weird jump comes from.

Love the sound of the unit. My only complaint is that you can't mount 2 units in a rack without leaving a large gap between them. I know this is best with ventilated tube units but these according to Matt these are little hot boxes and can be close mounted. What's stopping the close mounting is the round head screws between the top and bottom lids line up with each other. Also the transformer mounting screws. Even if I remove the top plate the bottom plate screws hit the lower unit. The problem is also the case is the same height ( actually a little larger ) then the faceplate, thus with the the protruding top and bottom screws, the unit is taller than a 2 space unit. This also prevents the D4's placement in a single 2 space portable anvil rack. I only have 8 rack spaces and I also wanted to mount 2 of Matt's compressors with the D4's. Flat heads screws might not solve the problem. The cases should have been shorter than the faceplate. I going to have to find a solution. I hope the compressors don't have the same problem.
P.S. The way the holes line up, there has to be one rack space between the units and one above and one below.

The early D4's used pan head screws for the enclosure, which prevents close quarter racking. I thought the concept looked kind of cool and chunky; I actually took the idea from Retro Instruments, which does something similar.
Later versions have a brushed aluminum enclosure that is flush. The D864 uses this newer enclosure...speaking of which, I'm working on getting D864's ready for shipment.

Also, it looks like we've solidified an Australian dealer relationship. So hopefully there will be D4's available in Australia by the end of next week.

Is it supposed to go up? Isn't the D4 the same price?

Preorder pricing for D864 was only for the month of June.
Looks like we've got ourselves an Australian dealer...Federal Audio.

Ordered a vari Mu yesterday. Delish! Modded 1604 now this ,man I want to move in I'll sleep under the console! 1608!!! Yeah well it's a hectic time at my place but I'm pretty stoked. Just moved in an MM1000 and an MM1200 too. So it's an Ampex, API, Dizengoff room now. Had to sell a bunch of stuff to find all this... But it's got the sound of American rock&roll!!! Hahahaha! Maybe it's not funny...I'm moving backwards.

Mine was assembled and shipped out two days after I ordered it. Matt was going out of town at the time so he might have expedited the order, but my sense is they are keeping up with demand, but also keeping tight reins on inventory. If you're in a rush - I'd say shoot him an email and ask how long?

I haven't had too much occasion to use it yet. I used it once as a DI for bass. and I also tried it out on a scratch vocal with an SMB7 that I had just purchased, so I don't really have much in the way of a reference. Also, I didn't push it hard so I haven't really experienced it's tonal range. The SMB7 didn't wow me (for my voice) so I returned it.
