Les Congratulations! Let us know what you think! Roman is cheaper than cat food ! I don't know about that, my wife found a dead mouse in the backyard the other day, that should keep us going for a while. I will definitely do my best to compare the Splice and the WA76 and let you know my impressions. Sorry for hijacking this thread, back to the topic at hand. I am very interested in getting an LA2A and/or an LA3A type of compressor, so I will be paying close attention to these Golden Age products. I'm also interested in the Serpent products. Are the Chimera and the SA-3A basically the same compressor in a different form factor, or are there some fundamental differences? Is the SA-3A available as a built unit from a reliable builder that anyone is aware of?

Yes, they are for all intents and purposes the same, save power supply (obviously). Dan Deurloo built mine and it's perfect, top notch. I'd recommend him wholeheartedly.

Thank you for this info, I'll ask Dan about it once we're back to eating real food. One last compressor question for now, is there the same relationship between the Serpent SB4000 and SB4001, the same except for form factor? Can anyone recommend them as a buss compressor?

I've got a 500 series 4001. If you need a bus compressor and have a 500 rack, it's a no brainer. Excellent piece IMO. I'm guessing Dan would say the rack unit slightly edges out the 500 series, but that's his take on all 500 series modules. :-) Personally, the 4001 is great for me.

The gap pre sounded small compared to my ME1NV. I've heard of people having quality control problems with them as well...

IMO SB4001 is the best G comp clone in 500 series category (even better than the original unit in terms of flexibility eg. internal S.C, blend function, more time constant options, etc).

Talking about Serpents, take a look at my recording studio buddy. He doesn't say much, but he's the creative half of the partnership: Attachment Deleted

...projected street price on the GAP comps is under $500 from what I've gathered, with an ETA in early Fall...

$500! a T4b, the input and output trannys account for about that much $, now add an autoformer, a toroidal psu, a display meter etc...? if they're anything like the real deal units? it's going to be a serious rabbit pulled from the hat IMO 8)

I had one long time ago. Wasn't really impressed with it. Not bad, but nothing special about it.

How cheap could you build a a T4b in China in quantity?

...the GAP PRE-73 employed 3 generic trannies and debuted at $299 shipped...
...and to be honest, a buddy of mine test-modded a PRE-73 with Carnhills and said only the mic input tranny upgrade really made any significant difference in performance...the other 2 OEM Chinese transformers were decent...

I know we are talking Golden Age, but you have to look at what Bryce has done with Giving Cinemag large quantity orders and getting a a great price! So many of the high end manufacturers either order in small runs or have their own iron ! I am really curious to see what they can do with the T4b! Worst case put some superior Iron and t4b and you end up with a nice piece of kit!

Wonder what it would cost to have someone assemble the Serpent SA-3A for me.I'm really interested in that unit, just don't want to screw up such a large DIY investment. Much more significant than the Coulors that I put together.

I notice he hasn't been here since July 2, so hopefully he's just taking a well-deserved break, or he's got too much good work to spend time online right now.

In case Dan is currently too busy, is there anybody else reliable that would be willing to assemble an SA-3A?
I would really only need a single LA-3A type compressor, is there a way to build an SA-3A into a 19" rackmount box, either one or two units high? Or would that just look silly?

You need a pair for stereo acoustic guitars. You'll thank me later.

The SA3A IS a rack mount box. If you just need a single, I'd get a Serpent Chimera and call it good. But personally, I'd do as scoutu1 says and do a stereo unit. (SA3A)
